Attempted breach of my Wiki account: Part 1
[edit]On August 15, 2007 at 5:38 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, someone from the IP address 12.42.183.2 tried to get into my account. His strategy was to request that Wikipedia create a new login password for my account. Which Wikipedia did - and sent it to my email address. Which is how I found out about it.
According to Wikipedia's email,
- "If someone else made this request, or if you have remembered your password and you no longer wish to change it, you may safely ignore this message. Your old/existing password will continue to work despite this new password being created for you."
In other words, WIkipedia is saying, "If someone's trying to break into your account, don't sweat it, and don't let us know."
Doesn't it seem like Wikipedia should want to know about that sort of thing? It's not as if someone accidentally tried to log into my account and then accidentally requested a new password for me.
An update: this IP address appears to be located in Bridgeton, Missouri, and the user contributed two edits to Wikipedia, both on the entry for List of Korean Americans.
