I live and work in Lancashire, England and am now beginning to find my way round Wikipedia. My contributions were initially expanding the articles on the villages and towns in the area around and about. Cheers Bob. Photo from scan of old postcard of Trickett's Arcade - note it doesn't have the full ironware canopy all the way round as it does today - not as good a quality as I would have preferred. I'm struggling with the map - the scanner plate is too small for the full map and I'm having to copy in sections and try to piece together as a JPEG. I'll stick with it though. By all means delete this image. It was uploaded in the process of making major edits to the Mask entry and it didn't get used. Meanwhile, I had forgotten it existed, poor orphan image! Bob 08:45, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great work on improving the article; however, almost every copyrighted image you have on the page needs to be removed because they are not considered fair use. There is a strong push on Wikipedia to remove all non-free media, especially without a strong fair-use rationale. Unfortunately, virtually none of the publicity and screen stills fall under that criteria on the puppet page. Otherwise, keep up the good work! --David Shankbone 12:45, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

David, thanks - actually other than adding a few images and removing one or two, most of the images were there before my recent work on the article. I think many of the illustrations are rather poor and hope to do some work on them too, when time allows. BobF this is a really, really great article. Have added some additional information and references. Hope you don't mind, but I have tried to make sure photos and text go together and are not with text that is not connected. There is new information on 1. Museums and 2. Schools (Universities) that specialise in extensive training. Bob just thought I should let you know Atropos is not terribly informed about Puppetry in general. Captions were removed from photos leaving no explanation making them basically useless in your absence. Most of the new sections of the article I added. I can understand certain copyrighted images disappearing although the vast majority already exist on other wikipedia articles and appear to be copyright free. Let me know what you think. Hi Finneganw, I've noted on the Puppet Talk page that you've made important contributions to the article. I came back from a holiday break and saw that the article looked better in many ways, though I now think that it's overburdened with pictures, copyrighted or not. I also agree that for any serious research captions need to be fairly detailed, or relate directly and clearly to the text. Ultimately the new sections to the article are excellent and it's good to know that they have been contributed by someone who is informed about puppets and puppetry. Blackface in Bacup

Thanks for the heads up, Bobf, that you put on my talk page regarding an unwikify edit on the Bacup article. I was just trying to go through and wikify terms in the cocoanuts dancers portion of that article, and the blackface link seemed appropriate at the time. I understand your explanation, and I won't get into a revert war over it! It may make sense, however, to either add a section to the current blackface article to reflect the English usage of the word in the English folk dance context, or to create a new article along those lines. I figured that you were good enough to add something to the blackface page, it made sense to add a dab to Bacup to reference it. If it becomes a revert, edit war problem, feel free to remove the wikilink with my agreement. Protective masks

  • I'm great it'll make a new page. Just put {{main|Protective masks}} on top of the Masks#Protective section, and work for there.   • Thanks for that. I'm working on the page. I lifted the section straight out of the Masks article just because it was little more than a list, and wasn't up to the standard of the main body of that article.   • Yes, I've been following progress on the list of puppeteers. I think one thing is to look closely at the Embedded List guidelines and modify the entry following the Manual of Style; possibly using the suggested example of list of Indian language poets as a guide. One problem is with the definition of notability; notable on what basis? I could easily imagine the list extending to several hundred names depending on the criteria used for selection. My suggestion would be to include names in the notability list only if the claim can be supported by a short prose description outlining the basis for inclusion. I wonder what other editors feel? I'm happy to start this process if there's a consensus Bob (talk) 08:01, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

Conflict of interest policy

Hello. I don't know if you've been pointed at this before, but if you're directly connected with Horse and Bamboo Theatre, you should take a look at Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy and keep it in mind when editing related articles. Although a connected person can be a great source of information, they can sometimes be too close to their subject to be properly objective (or to restrict their edits to verifiable material). Good to hear it. Keep the "close relationships" aspect of the COI guidelines in mind, though - even if you think you're being strictly factual, you may be giving undue weight to a point of view that favours Horse+Bamboo, or mentioning something that's never been stated in the public domain.

Problems at the Puppetry page

Bobf I am not sure quite what is happening at the Puppetry page. There is a user by the name of Sarah who continually removes information on two Australian puppeteers who are both well-known UNIMA members. Both of their works are in the University of Melbourne Victorian College of the Arts library and overseas as respected reference works. The British Library even has one of the works in their collection! You probably know that Puppetry is currently offered at the University of Melbourne at Masters level. What can be done to solve this problem editor as she doesn't seem to know much about puppetry and does not offer any constructive input. It is really difficult to understand why she continues to openly vandalise the puppetry page. Perhaps she has some sort of problem and needs to be blocked from editing the page for a time? It would seem there definitely is a need for an uninvolved administrator to intervene. Please get back to me. Marysally 09:14, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • All I can say from this distance is that Sarah [[1]] appears to be a well respected and experienced editor. I have also agreed with a number of her editorial decisions in the past. However on the surface your concerns seem well founded; but we must go back to first principles, namely that Wikipedia is based on collaboration between editors and the assumption of good faith. I would advise a direct dialogue with User:Sarah laying out your case for inclusion of material. Failing that, WP:DR gives advice on dispute resolution.   • Theatre has been nominated as the next project collaboration. This could be an excellent opportunity to improve the quality of one of our most important articles - listed as one of Wikipedia's top 1000 most vital articles - but it needs a lot of work before it can be considered for even good article nomination!

Peer review newsletter #1

Hello to all! I do not intend to write a regular peer review newsletter but there does occasionally come a time when those interested in contributing to peer review should be contacted, and now is one. I've mailed this out to everyone on the peer review volunteers list, and some editors that have contributed to past discussions. Apologies if I've left you off or contacted you and you didn't want it. Next time there is a newsletter / mass message it will be opt in (here), I'll talk about this below - but first:

  • THANK YOU! I want to thank you for your contributions and for volunteering on the list to help out at peer review. Thank you!
  • Peer review is useful! It's good to have an active peer review process. This is often the way that we help new or developing editors understand our ways, and improve the quality of their editing - so it fills an important and necessary gap between the teahouse (kindly introduction to our Wikiways) and GA and FA reviews (specific standards uphelp according to a set of quality criteria). And we should try and improve this process where possible (automate, simplify) so it can be used and maintained easily.

Update #1: the peer review volunteers list is changing

The list is here in case you've forgotten: WP:PRV. Kadane has kindly offered to create a bot that will ping editors on the volunteers list with unanswered reviews in their chosen subject areas every so often. You can choose the time interval by changing the "contact" parameter. Options are "never", "monthly", "quarterly", "halfyearly", and "annually". For example:

  • {{PRV|JohnSmith|History of engineering|contact=monthly}} - if placed in the "History" section, JohnSmith will receive an automatic update every month about unanswered peer reviews relating to history.
  • {{PRV|JaneSmith|Mesopotamian geography, Norwegian fjords|contact=annually}} - if placed in the "Geography" section, JaneSmith will receive an automatic update every yearly about unanswered peer reviews in the geography area.

We can at this stage only use the broad peer review section titles to guide what reviews you'd like, but that's better than nothing! You can also set an interest in multiple separate subject areas that will be updated at different times.

Update #2: a (lean) WikiProject Peer review

I don't think we need a WikiProject with a giant bureaucracy nor all sorts of whiz-bang features. However over the last few years I've found there are times when it would have been useful to have a list of editors that would like to contribute to discussions about the peer review process (e.g. instructions, layout, automation, simplification etc.). Also, it can get kind of lonely on the talk page as I am (correct me if I'm wrong) the only regular contributor, with most editors moving on after 6 - 12 months.

So, I've decided to create "WikiProject Peer review". If you'd like to contribute to the WikiProject, or make yourself available for future newsletters or contact, please add yourself to the list of members.

Update #3: advertising

We plan to do some advertising of peer review, to let editors know about it and how to volunteer to help, at a couple of different venues (Signpost, Village pump, Teahouse etc.) - but have been waiting until we get this bot + WikiProject set up so we have a way to help interested editors make more enduring contributions. So consider yourself forewarned!

All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.
