Hi there. Just spotted your Scottish Gaelic placenames site. You say you don't speak any Scottish Gaelic. Without meaning to be condescending, I would strongly suggest that you seek out a native Gaelic speaker before giving advice on pronounciation of Gaelic placenames. I'm a first language Irish speaker and also know some Scottish Gaelic. While there are many differences betweeen Irish and Scottish Gaelic the basic consonants and many of the vowels are the same in both languages. The pronunciation on the Munromagic website would appear to be largely erroneous. The lady pronounces Beinn a' Ghlò continuously without a fricative "g" and fails to give a velarised "l". Hi, glad you've stumbled across this page - Wikipedians with knowledge of both Gaelic (of either variety) and IPA are rare indeed, so your input is very welcome. I'm glad you've confirmed my suspicions about the reliability of Munromagic as well; I've been using it as a rough guide but I've been much more inclined to trust the Fuaimean na Gàidhlig website. Please do look over my transcriptions and correct any that look wrong; I've created this list partly so that anyone better qualified for the task than myself can see what I've done and correct if necessary. I have actually attempted to learn some Gaelic at various points in my life (but sill wouldn't claim to speak it by any stretch of the imagination) and have a degree in Modern Languages, so I hope I'm doing a reasonable job in interpreting the Fuaimean site, though with all the myriad rules and exceptions of Gaelic pronunciation I'm bound to have made some mistakes. Anyway, thanks again for dropping by, and if you look at the pronunciations given in some of the articles I haven't yet corrected I hope you'll agree that what I'm doing is an improvement of sorts! --Blisco 20:45, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
