Roger Yates

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Roger Yates requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Rockpocket 02:51, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again, Billlegend2. I just wanted to re-iterate what I said in the Roger Yates talk page. We have criteria by which that we judge the notability of academics (WP:PROF) for our purposes. It appears from his bio that Dr Yates falls pretty short of those. Therefore, for his article to remain we must establish why he is notable, and provide third party sources to verify it. As far as I can tell, any claim to notability would seem to rest on his prior activities as an ALF activist, for which he appears to have been jailed. Yet there is no mention of that in the article you have written, much less sources to verify it. I'm happy to give you some time to establish his notability, if that is your intention, but if there is no movement towards that I will nominate the article for deletion by WP:AfD. I think I do state he was jailed - ref to Mann (and Henshaw). This guy was a well-known activist in the 1980s and now he is still part of 'the movement' from an academic perspective. Would it help if I can get the Profs he's current working with (Profs Beirne, Powell, Francione, Torres) to write something?

To understand his growing importance means understanding what's going on with Gary Francione and the "animal rights movement" which he and Yates says does not exist. Francione has just launched what is arguably the first AR movement in the sense of a potential social movement - earlier Francione was marginalised (1990s) as was Tom Regan (1980s).

I's say both of them are notable because they may well be building a new social movement that takes rights seriously rather than the Peter Singer/Anarchist liberationists

Will

No need, what you had added is sufficient for a claim of notability, I think. I have asked a colleague, who is one of our most knowledgeable editors on AR issues, to have a look at it. She said she would try and find some more references from third party sources to beef it up a bit. Thanks for your work in improving out coverage of animal rights issues, by the way if you are interested in this subject you may wish to joining WP:WPAR. Rockpocket 18:45, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Alliance for Animal Rights has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable group that fails the WP:GNG and WP:NORG. None of the current references are valid sources, as they are either blogs or do not mention the group at all. Searching for any additional sources turned up nothing but brief mentions, with no significant coverage.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
