Hi! Just spied your edit to the VSAA article, and thought I'd introduce myself and let you know you're welcome to come to the Portland WikiWednesday. WikiWednesdays are basically wiki user groups that happen on the first Weds. of every month, and we do one in Portland too. Check out pdx.wiki.org for more info. Going around articles and cleaning up typos is a thankless task but a very important one on the project. So thank you and know that your efforts are noticed and appreciated AgneCheese/Wine 21:49, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! It's enjoyable to fix typos. BTW, how did you know I was fixing them? Biglovinb (talk) 08:02, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You went across several articles that happen to be on my watchlist. AgneCheese/Wine 17:42, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cool! I thought maybe you had a neat realtime monitor, or something like that. I should have remembered the obvious ... LOL! --Biglovinb (talk) 18:46, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Newb needs help

[edit]

I'm new to contributing on Wikipedia and have recently joined the Typo Team. I recently fixed my first typo in an article (Suminoe-ku, Osaka - changing maratime > maritime) however, even though the word now shows correct in the article, when I search incorrect spellings of maritime again...a result still shows with the incorrect spelling..?? I just thought I'd ask a fellow Typo Team member..Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? Any input would help...thanks Stratt3000 (talk) 23:43, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Stratt! It depends on what you are using to search for the incorrect spellings. For example, if you use Google's advance search function to search the "en.wikipedia.org" domain, you need to keep in mind that Google's cache of web pages isn't necessarily real time. In fact, some of them are several days to weeks old. So if you change a Wikipedia page now, it probably won't show up as a change on Google for quite some time. If the live Wikipedia page shows your typo to be corrected, then I wouldn't worry any more about it. To make absolutely certain, check the history of the page. If you see your change logged, then rest assured you did it correctly. Bear in mind that my experience is only with Google. If you are using another tool to search for incorrect spellings, I suspect that the explanation is basically the same. Some of Wikipedia's lists of "things to do" are only generated once a day, so that might be another explanation. I hope that helps! -- Biglovinb (talk) 00:05, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

October 2009

[edit]

Hi, please have a close look at your edits when you are "Repairing links to disambiguation pages". See for example Thales, Gudny, Gothenburg Museum of Art and so on. --Jaellee (talk) 15:44, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jaellee. Thanks for pointing out those edits. I have been using WikiCleaner for the past few days, and I have had problems with it. For the Gothenburg Museum of Art, it was supposed to replace Nordic, with Nordic countries. Unfortunately, it sometimes chooses to replace ANY instance of Nordic, regardless of whether or not it's in a bracket! So ... I am abandoning WikiCleaner, and going back to the manual method. I will review all of the edits I made yesterday in the next few hours. Thanks again! -- Biglovinb (talk) 16:52, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and thank you for fixing the problems. I've noticed that this use of WikiCleaner can cause mistakes even within brackets, if the search term is in piped display text or is only part of the article name. I have selectively reverted Cardiac arrest, because this good-faith edit contained a few errors along with the helpful changes. Certes (talk) 17:33, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for catching those and fixing them, Certes. I thought that I had caught them all, but obviously there are still a few out there. I completely abandoned the use of WikiCleaner because of this. It will also make changes to text that's not in brackets! So now I only use AWB, and I furthermore don't engage in mass edits. Best Regards! -- Biglovinb (talk) 01:30, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Toolserver update

[edit]

Heya, I added code to http://toolserver.org/~jason/disambig_links.php so you can now jump to articles with a specified link count. Enjoy! --JaGatalk 17:34, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just checked it out, and it works perfectly. Exactly what I needed. It's so great that it deserves it's own article ;) All kidding aside, thanks for your work on this. I appreciate it. --Biglovinb (talk) 07:53, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:01, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Backlog drive

[edit]

Hello Biglovinb,

WikiProject Orphanage is holding a month long Backlog Elimination Drive to de-orphan articles which have orphan tags!
The goal is to eliminate the backlog of orphan articles. There are currently 53281 articles which have orphan tags. The drive is running from April 12, 2014 to May 12, 2014.

Awards will be given out for all editors participating in the drive in the form of barnstars at the end of the drive. To add your name in the participants list click here.
So start de-orphaning articles! Click here to see the list of articles need de-orphaning.

deOrphaning script

[edit]

Hello everyone! I was just working on responding to a couple bug reports for a script that I worked up as part of a request from this project, and I noticed that only a couple people (who weren't even on this mailing list) are actually using the script. A little history on the script: In March of 2014, Jim Cartar came to my user talk page and said he needed some help in acquiring a script for a backlog drive that he was working on that could keep track of and score deOrphanings for a scored backlog drive. I took that request to the project's talk page (BackLog Drive "DO" (De-Orphaning) script proposal) and there was near unanimous support for this. I thought about the proposal and decided the best way to do it was to build a new script (which is still no where near as comprehensive as Manishearth's OrphanTabs) and build into it a mechanism that will make BLD scoring easy.

What I'm wondering at this point is, since there appears to be only two people using the script, should I continue to develop this script with a goal of using it for scoring BLDs or just debug the existing script and leave it at that. Thanks for any replies or comments.
