Welcome
[edit]Hello, Berta0917 and welcome to Wikipedia! It appears you are participating in a class project. If you haven't done so already, we encourage you to go through our training for students.
If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}}
before the question. Please also read this helpful advice for students.
Before you create an article, make sure you understand what kind of articles are accepted here. Remember: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and while many topics are encyclopedic, some things are not.
Your instructor or professor may wish to set up a course page, and if your class doesn't already have one please tell your instructor about that. It is highly recommended that you place this text: {{Educational assignment}}
on the talk page of any articles you are working on as part of your Wikipedia-related course assignment. This will let other editors know this article is a subject of an educational assignment and aid your communication with them.
We hope you like it here and encourage you to stay even after your assignment is finished! -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 01:22, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Tourism
[edit]Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate you trying to improve articles, adding a bunch of external links to local restaurants, malls etc. isn't constructive towards building a Wikipedia nor does it fit with Wikipedia's tone. Check out Tourism in Chicago for example. While it lists tourist attractions, they don't send readers to those pages but instead, describe the place and use third party newspapers to explain tourism in the city. As well, notice how under "Attractions" all the links are blue. This means they have Wikipedia pages and are considered notable. Please don't just add a bunch of links as that isn't constructive towards building a Wikipedia. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 01:10, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Request reason:
I am a first time user and unintentionally promoted area sites/restaurants to our town wikipedia article. My intent was not to advertise these places but to inform the public of what was available as part of a class assignment. I apologize for this error on my part and want to know the next steps, so that I can again become unblock???
Decline reason:
If that was genuinely a class assignment, then your teacher has no idea how Wikipedia works, and has no business getting their students to edit here. Regardless, the minimum criteria we would expect to be fulfilled in order to unblock you would be an agreement to cease adding external links to articles. You will also need to indicate what and how you intend to edit in the future. Yunshui 雲水 07:33, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
- I would recommend agreeing to not add further information about these businesses and to agree to not edit the pages you added said information to. You will need to tell us what constructive, not spammy, well sourced edits you would make. How will you help to improve Wikipedia, the world's larges free-content encyclopedia? All content must be cited from reliable sources that are unconnected with the subject and have a reputation for fact checking.
- You might want to tell your instructor that spamming Wikipedia is a poor choice of assignments. I mean really'.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 05:59, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
- "Informing the public" is advertising. 331dot (talk) 06:41, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

Request reason:
This is my second request to become unblocked. I am having a hard time navigating Wikipedia as yesterday was my first time using it. I was on Wikipedia less than a few hours, before I was blocked. I had a class assignment to go into Wikipedia and made a contribution to an article. It was never my intention to advertise for anything, but I guess I did not realize that this was not allowed. I thought I was adding information that would be useful for anyone visiting that article. My instructor gave us the guidelines and links to Wikipedia and instructions. She in no way instructed us in any way to advertise on articles. That was all my error. I missed or misunderstood the part in the instructions that advertising and promotion of anything is a big NO. I have definitely learned my lesson on this and will read things more carefully. I will not add further information about these businesses to that article and will not further edit these specific pages. I will not go back to the same article but will find another article that I can make minor contributions too. I will be sure to source any edits that I make. I will not link external sites at any time. My assignment doesn't have to be about any specific article, but something that I could make a contribution too. The purpose of the assignment was to make additions and get familiar with Wikipedia, and how it works. As I am still totally new to the whole process, I am not sure specifically how I will improve the next time I use it, but I know that I won't be linking anything to any article I am blocked, because I was editing for advertising or promotion. Again, not my intent, but it was what I did. :( Only that my intent was not to promote any business. It was only my ignorance in not reading the instructions carefully. This request was copied from the appeal page as I could not submit a second request there??? Not sure if this is the talk page, and where I how I should send this.Berta0917 (talk) 00:04, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
Accept reason:
What you did seems to have been an innocent mistake because being new here you didn't know what was acceptable. Since you now seem to understand the situation, I am willing to give you another chance. However, here's a word of advice: you probably wouldn't have been blocked if you had taken notice of the fact that experienced editors were reverting what you did, and instead of just doing the same thing over and over again stopped and asked why. Be willing to ask if you don't understand what is going on or why. Also, it is really not a good idea for a teacher to set students assignments to edit Wikipedia unless the teacher knows enough about how Wikipedia works to be able to give the students the kind of support and instruction that is needed to avoid this kind of problem. You may or may not like to tell your teacher that. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 07:33, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

@Drmies: I think we should give Berta another chance, now that she appears to understand that what she did was a mistake, so that she will be unlikely to do the same again. Do you have any opinion to offer? The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 21:17, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Also Yunshui, Dlohcierekim, and 331dot may like to comment. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 21:19, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- If someone sees merit in an unblock here, I have no objection. 331dot (talk) 21:28, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- You know I'm fine with that, JamesBWatson--thank you. Drmies (talk) 21:32, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- I support unblock.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 00:09, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
- With acceptance of my suggestion from the blocking administrator and two of the other three administrators who had commented before I posted here, I will go ahead and unblock. Yunshui, I'm afraid you missed getting your word in this time. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 07:33, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
