Street names in French

[edit]

Hi, Bernard. Just saw your changes to Concours de facades de la ville de Paris. This is to let you know that I didn't capitalise the words 'rue' in the introduction because it is a French word and would not be capitalised in French. I will let you decide if you should undo your recent changes. Probably English speakers would be more comfortable with the capital R. However, in order to be consistent, we should make the changes to the other street names (boulevard, place, avenue in the rest of the article. Hi Dr Dobeaucoup and thanks for your message. The capitalised form as it stands (following my change) is correct. French words such as 'Rue', 'Avenue', 'Boulevard', etc. should be capitalised in English when used alone (same as 'Street', 'Piazza', etc.). When preceded by a street number, they form an address and should be minimised. So you would have for instance: "Mr Jean lives on 4 rue de Rivoli", but the "the Rue de Rivoli lies in the 1st arrondissement". Therefore, the French rules on capitalisation and the consistency argument do not justify reverting here. Please let me know if you see otherwise. No. That’s fine with me. Thx for the info on WP capitalisation rules. Dr Dobeaucoup (talk) 11:19, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
