I recommend that you implement a parameter that disables your categories. See {{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/MLB-Cardinals}} for how I did it. This helps with pages like Wikipedia:Userboxes/Sports/US_and_Canadian#American_League.
Also, note that I don't allow categories on the template's page.
