SVGs from PDFs

Hello!

I clearly extract SVGs from PDFs in the wrong way since they get huge. Eventhough I delete everything in the PDF but the SVG it seems as the deleted parts get saved in the SVG code anyway. That is my only explaination to the huge size anyway. Can you perhaps fix these? (And teach me how do extract the SVGs in a better way, it'd be appreciated).Jonteemil (talk) 20:29, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

Jonteemil, I'm going to list below exactly the steps to take to extract the first one with Inkscape (since that's what I think you have):
  • Open page 44 of the pdf with inkscape.
  • Zoom in to our target logo with the magnifier - "Coates Hire"
  • Select just the logo with the selection arrow.
  • Now do Edit-Cut, and make sure only that logo disappears (you could use Edit-Copy here, but Cut is nice because you get visual confirmation that only your target logo disappears, and when you've done the other steps and go back to this window to get more logos the ones you've already done are gone - which is visually helpful. You can always 'undo' if you get it wrong)
  • File - New (this creates a new, empty file, just for this logo, so that we are pasting in just what we want, and nothing else...)
  • Edit - Paste
  • Edit - Select all in all layers
    • Optionally, to resize:
    • In the Transform window, click the Scale tab (Note: If the Transform window isn't visible, Object-Transform will show it)
    • From the units pulldown, select px
    • Enter your desired width
    • Check the box that says scale proportionally
    • Click Apply
  • Click File-Document properties
  • In the Custom Size window, ensure the units are px
  • Expand the Resize page to Content section just below that
  • Click Resize page to drawing or selection
  • File-Save as SVG
  • Done...
  • Now close your "new" saved logo, go back to the "main" pdf window; rinse, repeat for any more...
I just followed exactly those steps to create a new SVG for "Coates Hire", which was 7.84 Kilobytes instead of your 12 Megabytes. I can't say precisely what you are not deleting, since I'm not watching you - but by doing it this way - the File - New creates a new, empty file, and then you only ever paste what you actually want into it.
It's likely that you're just setting your "view" window to the content you want, and putting the other content outside it - that doesn't remove the other content, it just puts it outside the viewport, so not rendered, but still in the code. You should probably read about viewbox/viewport sizing and how it works in the tutorial here and here. -- Begoon 05:11, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
checkY... meanwhile, I fixed the 14 on your list. -- Begoon 06:40, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for a detailed answer! I usually use Inkscape with short commands since there are so many so shift+ctrl+r is my go-to option for cropping to content and ctrl+. for increasing the size and ctrl+, for decreasing the size. I think it does the job as good as your way.Jonteemil (talk) 13:51, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
How come File:Auskick logo.svg still is very large?Jonteemil (talk) 14:17, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
Probably bc the multiple of gradients now when I think about it.Jonteemil (talk) 14:19, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
Btw, is "In the Custom Size window, ensure the units are px" mandatory? I mean, do I do it because it's easier to compare with other files on Wikipedia who have the sizes in pixels or do I do it because Wikipedia can't handle files that have mm as the size?Jonteemil (talk) 14:27, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
Jonteemil, if keyboard shortcuts work better for you then great - I don't even usually use Inkscape for much of this, so I had to fire it up and do a step-by-step and take notes in order to answer your question.

Auskick - yeah, just lots of gradients, but it works quite nicely.

Units - you can use whatever units you prefer (they work like CSS units and they are all 'relative' anyway, once the Scalable Vector Graphic gets scaled... ) but for consistency I generally stick to px since, as you say, it's the yardstick here and if you're not careful you can get some "confusing" results mixing and matching. I find it easier to compare things and do scaling etc. if units are consistent. Plus, in my 'run-through' I did the optional resize in 'px' so sticking to that later made sense. -- Begoon 21:11, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Ok, thanks๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป.Jonteemil (talk) 22:44, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
Hi, again, for some reason when I follow your steps on File:Vallens IF logo.svg the text "STORA Hร–GA" gets unproportionally small for some reason. How do I fix that?Jonteemil (talk) 14:16, 5 November 2019 (UTC)X
Jonteemil, that's a difficult one for me to answer, because when I just "followed my steps" exactly to try to see what went wrong, nothing did, and I got a 55 Kb svg with no issues I can see (yours was 450 Kb). Are you sure that you [a] only selected the logo component objects to cut/paste, and [b] didn't de-select something before resizing (perhaps while adding the white 'slash')? -- Begoon 04:19, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
Just to add - that text is actual text, not paths - and that's what's probably causing part of your issue. If I look at the logo on their website it doesn't match what we have, and it doesn't seem to match if I install the font specified in the pdf/svg "Barmeno" either - so I'm going to try to match it better in a moment. -- Begoon 04:44, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
Jonteemil, ok, I re-extracted it, and Illustrator was able to create the fonts using Barmeno font. I converted that text to outlines so it shouldn't have any rendering issues now. The outlines (stroke) on the logo in general are a bit "heavier" (thicker) than in your extract, but I think they are closer to the weight in the "banner" at http://www.vallensif.se/ (https://www8.idrottonline.se/globalassets/vallens-if---fotboll/bilder/hemsida-banner.jpg?w=980) now. I can tweak them if you disagree. -- Begoon 05:37, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
Although, now I look back, it seems Inkscape had converted that text to "symbols" in your output, so I'm still a little confused about the whole sequence of events there... Anyway, I think it's all fine now - though I still don't really understand how you ended up with such a large file, or why the resize was behaving oddly for that type for you - I've replicated the above steps a couple of times now, and that doesn't happen to me... -- Begoon 09:23, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
It was probably the fact that the text wasnโ€™t path that my computer chose not to comply with, because I did have one successful PDF extraction before it. The rest will probably also go well, as the first one. Do you know btw if you can request a deletion of the oversized versions over at Commons? I donโ€™t see why those identical versions with more memory taken up should be kept.Jonteemil (talk) 03:11, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Old versions of files aren't deleted (or hidden via WP:REVDEL) unless they are non-free or there is a copyright, legal or privacy issue or something similar. There's no point anyway, because the old versions aren't physically removed from the server when a version is "deleted", they are just hidden from view, the actual file is kept so that it can be restored if necessary, and for audit/attribution purposes. Remember, on a wiki nothing is ever truly "deleted" (except for very rare cases, usually needing a developer to perform). Funnily enough it actually takes very slightly more storage space to "delete" a version, because the file is kept and an additional database and log record has to be created to mark it "deleted" so that the software will hide it from normal view. So, basically, you shouldn't worry about it - some files have literally hundreds of old revisions. -- Begoon 03:39, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Oh... I hope Wikimedia have a lot of storage space then...ย :).Jonteemil (talk) 03:44, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- I believe they do... Although I think, from memory, that the cost of that is far less than the ongoing internet charges of serving a gazillion pages a day to users worldwide. -- Begoon 03:49, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Raven?

I haven't listened to the song, and I'm not about to, but given that raven on your user page... Drmies (talk) 14:50, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

It's a random "Picture of the day" between 2009 and now, so everyone gets a different image. I never saw the raven you got. The video is 4 minutes - I managed one. -- Begoon 00:55, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
Oh, really? Ha, that's cool. As for the video, I managed 15 seconds, that's all. BTW I'm seeing a lot of Doug Jones signs, so it may well be that Moore gets a real run for his money. Drmies (talk) 02:11, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

I doff my cap to your powers of prediction. I hope you troubled the bookies with that one. I also hope your shoulder recovers quickly and fully. Take care (and Bourbon). -- Begoon 08:58, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks--but I had Moore by five points. Alabama surprised many of us; it was redeemed, yet again, by the African-American vote, and especially that of black women. Some of us should start to show our appreciation, maybe. Later! Drmies (talk) 05:08, 17 December 2017 (UTC)

Author line on logo files

Thanks for your cordial reply; I didn't mean to sound defensive, but your initial message took me by surprise. I have uploaded several hundred logos to Wikipedia over the last three or four years and you were the very first to notify me of my error. Since your message I have been leaving the Author line blank. It appears that the actual author of the file doesn't show up on the finished File page; in other words, whether I signed on the author line or not the File looks the same; my name shows up only as the user. User:Rudy2alan (talk)

I might have phrased the initial message better, now I read it again, sorry...

You're correct - {{Non-free use rationale logo}} doesn't actually display any "author" info you enter, it uses |Owner= which is a better parameter because usually we wouldn't know an "author" but might know an owner (parent company etc). There's no need to put anything in |Owner= unless it's different to the article name value though, because it will default.

Still, whether it displays or not (and with some other templates, such as {{Information}} it would, so anyone converting a file description page containing it to, say, {{PD-Textlogo}} would suddenly find an "author" appearing - see, for example, this one), it's better to not enter misleading information that somebody might take as fact, so thank you for no longer entering it like that. The fact that it doesn't usually display is probably why nobody ever mentioned it to you before.

Thanks for the note, and for all your uploads, which have improved many articles. -- Begoon 04:47, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
