Republic of Ireland on EU page

Hi there Bastun, a debate is currently in progress on the EU talk page concerning the use of either ‘Republic of Ireland’ or ‘Ireland’ to identify the state. As the page is clearly political and involves both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, I am arguing for ‘Republic of Ireland’ for reasons of both clarity and common sense. Notable Catholics

Sorry, my computer signed me out! I just noticed the IP address signature instead of mine.

I guess I'm a bit confused on the Irish Roman Catholic category. If a person self-identifies with being Irish Roman Catholic, shouldn't that category remain on that person's biography page? Not to mention being Catholics IS notable for famous Irish Republican figures politically as well. How can this NOT be important? This doesn't make sense to me. You have people removing the Irish Catholic category on Enya's page because they say she's not known for that. I would say she is a spiritual singer who has publicly identified as a practicing Roman Catholic when asked and performed for Pope John Paul II. A long time ago, I added the link to an interview in which she answered the question on religion, and the matter was settled. Now there are people removing the category again. Nicole Kidman has stated she is a practicing Catholic and the Australian Roman Catholic category remains on her page. What gives here? You have tons of American celebrities who identify as being Catholic and they remain on the American Catholic list. --CreativeSoul7981 (talk) 23:21, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Self-identifying as a Catholic? Not relevant. By that definition, the category would be added to 86.8% of Irish people's entries and becomes as useless as [Category:People who are right handed]. Republicanism does not necessarily equate to sectarianism and imho it would be against our WP:NPOV and WP:BLP policies to add the category (and likewise for adding the particular Protestant flavour to Loyalists). Enya's religious devotion isn't well known in Ireland, despite what you may think. I'm neutral on including it on her page - I won't add it or remove it. "Practicing" Roman Catholic? Meaningless. I've attended several christenings lately where neither the parents or kids will see a church again till the next sacrament of a family member. The reality is that with 92% of schools here being run by the Catholic church, you have to pretend to be one, even if you're not, to stand a decent chance of getting a kid into a decent, reasonably nearby school.

On the issue as a whole - the categories of any nationality's membership of any religion (or of none) should, in my opinion, only be added where it defines the person's notability or they're really well known for it - the same criteria as used for the Irish Roman Catholic category. Someone's recently removed the Irish Atheist category from several Irish people's articles, using the exact same edit summary I used for removing the Catholic one. Oh, one thing on the 'Republican' issue. Personally, I would draw a distinction between many of the pre-20th century rebels and/or politicians, many of whom were fighting for Catholic emancipation - e.g. Daniel O'Connell and some of the Irish Confederates - and 1916 on, when it was all about independence. I know where you're coming from in regards to people who don't attend Church. However, when a notable person identifies as Roman Catholic in an interview and talks about the spirituality of their music and faith - that is relevant. I don't get the double standard when it comes to the categories. These pages are biographies of notable people. Many wikipedians do not understand different rules for various categories. All the people I mentioned fit the criteria required by the Irish Roman Catholic category. If you also see Nicole Kidman's page, you will see her on the list of Australian Roman Catholics. If we go by some people's "rules", we will only have priests, bishops, and popes on the Irish Roman Catholic list. Isn't this a bit ridiculous? In Enya's case - I added an interview that discussed her faith. I had another link earlier where she answers questions about the importance of her faith to her music. She was also requested to play at the Vatican. She is very open about her religion. Her faith is so much a part of her music - that is notable. I do not see any indication why the category should be removed. I am trying to locate another article with several quotes from her, but I can't locate the newspaper/magazine. I am asking my Irish friends for help. I will be adding these links to the article hopefully by the end of this coming week. I think a televised performance at the Vatican and openly discussing her faith is enough proof to keep the category on her Wikipedia page. You have Charlotte Church who also performed for the Pope and she has the Welsh Roman Catholic category on her page. To quote the Irish Catholic category page: "Members of the Roman Catholic Church, either past or present for whom their membership was or is a defining characteristic or RELATED to their notability and where the person has self-indentified as a Roman Catholic." I have provided proof of her identity as a Catholic in the discussion and mentioned the singer has performed for the Pope. Just dropping a line to wonder if you would be interested in participating in setting up a Wikimedia chapter in Ireland. It took a year (almost to the day) but ten editors have expressed an interest, which meets the criteria for a "critical mass". How would you feel about it? Know of anyone who might be interested?
