Ribbons

I think that you have a good and sound idea in changing the ribbon images into the "svg" version. I could work on the bios. which I have written (there are so many of them). Right now, I'm taking an R&R from Wiki stress and just doing minor editing.

Question, do you plan on changing the decorations on every military bio. into "rack" versions with a table? In my opinion, you may want to bring that up on a discussion forum to avoid any war editing from the editors who may not agree.

I looked at the example and in my screen the ribbons looked huge. I believe (and again this is only my opinion) that a "60px" should be set up for these images as a standard. What do you think? Tony the Marine (talk) 19:54, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

  • I think that you may be right about the my screen resolution. My grand-daughter was messing around with my computor and she must have messed up my image resolution, I've been trying to fix it. Anyways your idea is a good one and a huge task. I will start changing the ribbons from JPG to Svg. soon. Tony the Marine (talk) 20:28, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Response from RekonDog

Yeah, I had a little trouble these past months. I explained that these belong to the Force Recon Association and I'm a member with permission from the creator. I thought I already fixed all that... There are several that that managed to not get deleted...its on my userpage in wiki contributions.RekonDog (talk) 21:54, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Enjoy the weather in Al Asad...and the sand in your MREs....good luck devil dog, Ooorah!
'RekonDog (talk) 01:49, 18 January 2009 (UTC)'
Thanks for the heads up, although I was briefed about this good news weeks ago! It does make me glad that they are revitalizing the deep recon assets for force commanders once again. Maybe since MARSOC is out there, it'll give Force Recon to fully operate for what they are actually used for, no more using recon Marines as augmented infantry, its abhorrific to the recon community. I'm lat-moving in Infantry once my schooling is over...
RekonDog (talk) 01:48, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

For the past few months I had been written the articles of the Fleet Marine Force and its Pacific and Atlantic sub-echelons...how do I bring these articles to the "Did you know..."? Or bring it to attention? The main article was nothing but a redirect to Marine Corp Forces (i.e. Marine Forces Pacific...Atlantic...) Except that it made the article untrue in a sense. Actually, the FMFPac and the Marine Corps operating forces are in fact separated entities, but subscribed as "One". Similar to the Trinity "Godhead" idea in Catholism. However, the "Dept. of the Navy" etymological format would be used in its stead. Thought I'd clear up that mess and confusion for readers... Anyways, thank you in advance for your help!

Project

Won't be able to coordinate. I only have a few minutes here....will be checking back in a few days. I'll take a look at your question about guidelines when at the end of the weekend. — ERcheck (talk) 22:20, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion

I have a suggestion about your project. Since there are hundreds of Bios of notable military men and women in Wikipedia and your task is a huge one, you should post your excellent idea in the talk page of the Military history WikiProject. With the example that you posted in my talk page, this way you may receive additional input and others may volunteer to join you. This is just an idea because I would hate it if others will protest after you put in a lot of work. Just an idea. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:45, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Tony's suggestion is an excellent. As the change is wide ranging, it will impact many articles across the project. I like the ribbon rack images, but, it is harder to follow the list of names reading left to right, if just reading. Recall that Wikipedia may be accessed by visually impaired readers, so following a table and deciphering order of precedence would be difficult. I'm trying to think of a nice way to figure out how to handle the visualization of names of ribbons with ribbons. It would be nice if clicking on a ribbon, instead of going to the image page, would go to the article on the award. — ERcheck (talk) 15:32, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
One preference - how about centering the image of the ribbon rack? I htink it looks better. — ERcheck (talk) 16:36, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Re:General Gray

Did you try here: [1]? You may have to zoom it or use some image majic to make out the ribbons. Tony the Marine (talk) 23:22, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Question on Gen Barrow image

Hi - you uploaded a new photo of CMC Barrow - over the old B&W image. Would you please put specific source information on the image description page. I've seen many a note from editor/bot on lack of specific sources - wanting more than the license tag. Thanks. — ERcheck (talk) 15:28, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Article suggestion - USMC Drill

In Culture_of_the_United_States_Marine_Corps#Drill_.26_ceremonies, there is as section on Close Order Drill. It seems an important enough subject to have its own article. For reference, see : :"2008 Special Issue - Drill" (Special Issue - Drill). Marines. 2008. Retrieved December 14, 2008. Entire issue on USMC Drill. Something you would be interested in writing? — ERcheck (talk) 23:36, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

New image for March 2009 bio

I added this to the 2009 Chuck Norris bio page for the portal -- File:Chuck Norris honorary Marine.JPG. — ERcheck (talk) 00:25, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

February portal

I've been reviewing upcoming portal entries. For February - Iwo Jima theme - I see you chose Rosenthal for the Article, while bio not chosen. Is there a reason that you didn't choose Battle of Iwo Jima for the article and Rosenthal for the bio? How about switching? Otherwise, I've put down a suggestion for the bio. — ERcheck (talk) 00:50, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Another idea - how about this for the picture?
A small, wooden board staked into the ground next to the flag-raising site on Mount Suribachi’s summit carries rank insignia and military devices visitors have left to pay homage to those who fought the battle.
Awesome ... I'll switch it out. — ERcheck (talk) 02:23, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
I meant the picture - which I just switched. — ERcheck (talk) 02:31, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
OK - I see what you meant - I intented to have the new picture as the "picture", the Mt Suribachi image is iconic - goes with the Battle, so I think that is still good for illustrating the Battle. So, what do you think? Check out Portal:United_States_Marine_Corps/picture/2009February. — ERcheck (talk) 02:33, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Do you know which General's insignia is near yours? — ERcheck (talk) 02:39, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

I agree - leave the image you put in with the Feb 2009 article. I'll find a replacement for May 2010. — ERcheck (talk) 02:49, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
You'll hate this and love this. I found a picture of the same memorial, taken by a different photographer - in color - but it doesn't have your insignia. I'm going to upload it, then you can take a look. It will be redlinked for a few minutes: see Tail end. — ERcheck (talk) 02:59, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
They both have their good points. The color one shows the aging of some better, and is a nice contrast to the other b&w photos that will be there in Feb. But, your points are well taken. I'm fine with whatever you choose. I think it is nice to have found both. — ERcheck (talk) 03:21, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
OK - I changed out Portal:United States Marine Corps/picture/2010May - in honor of Memorial Day. I looked at your mix of the b&w and color insignias. I much prefer the single image. What do you think about expanding the Battle_of_Iwo_Jima#Legacy section - adding something about the importance of Iwo Jima to Marines and the leaving of insignia, etc. It would be a good place to put one of the two images; the other could be used as the February picture. Since you've had the privilege of making it to Iwo Jima, would you be willing to do a short write up in the Battle article? — ERcheck (talk) 22:14, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Things are shaping up. Before you leave, we'll likely have everything planned to through the end of 2009 and into 2010. I've been working on the quotes - which is rather on the easy side. I've selected some more bios - which will take some work getting some in shape. I'm aiming to get the Lion of Fallujah cleaned up soon, so it will come up in the Spring. — ERcheck (talk) 04:52, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Request

USMC trainig

Hey Corporal :) I just wanted to ask you for something about Marines training. Is it true that for the "combat exercises" are the paintball or airsoft guns used? Thanks --Novis-M (talk) 20:27, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the response, and HAPPY NEW YEAR :D --Novis-M (talk) 05:27, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Oak leaf cluster images

I have original .svg artwork used to create the bronze and silver oak leaf cluster images used on the oak leaf cluster page. I have a gold version as well I can upload if you think it would help in the article where it talks about the gold leaf cluster device which ended up not being adopted. Lestatdelc (talk) 01:15, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Added a gold tone 3d .svg illustration based on my other illustrations, of the proposed gold leaf cluster ribbon device to the wikicommons and to the Oak leaf cluster article. I followed your suggestion and simply replaced the older file with my new one. Lestatdelc (talk) 02:37, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Your opinion

What do you think of this quote? How do you feel about a little humor on the Portal? — ERcheck (talk) 05:53, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Glad we agree. I would have loved to a free image of Roland Hedley for the page. But, it is explicitly noted (though I can't remember where now) that non-free images such as on the Hedley page cannot be used on Portals. As for the info on the insignia on Mt. Suribachi, the captions on the images are perfectly good sources - they are USMC published. — ERcheck (talk) 12:43, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Pictures

The portal pictures are loaded through the end of 2010, with >50% of the 2011 images chosen. Good source - Best of the U.S. Marine Corps CD Collection from the DoD. What do you think? — ERcheck (talk) 23:38, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

DoD has some great collections - which allowed a mix of black & white versus color, vehicles versus people versus aircraft, and matching themes/dates (Memorial Day/4th of July/Birthday month and anniversaries/birthdays to months). See your point on switching out, etc. - could have a list of candidates as we find them. With the current automatic set up, it would make that list much more useful. The pictures are the easiest to do. I find the biographies the most difficult - to get a variety, and that have interesting/unusual stories. I've lined up a few, but feel that the articles need work. — ERcheck (talk) 13:12, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
No problem - plenty of good images to chose from. I'll change it out. — ERcheck (talk) 13:51, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

(outdent) Any particular reason for choosing the UH 34D image for April? I'm not seeing anything particularly spectacular in the image? What do you think of this one? File:USMC_parachutist_Afghanistan_081208-M-0000J-002a.jpgERcheck (talk) 22:45, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

I'll keep an eye out for March 2013.
You and I are of the same mind on rotating images on the Portal - some variety. The April '09 image is not my favorite....I think the parachute picture is outstanding...I was considering nominating it for featured status, but don't know that there is an appropriate article that it is definitive for. — ERcheck (talk) 13:23, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

USAF Portal

Back in November, I was looking at the various Portals to see how they were working, with a thought to getting the USMC Portal to featured status. The USN Portal has a "random" element, which I did not want to set up. Then I looked at the USAF Portal -- It had the set up that I implement for the USMC Portal. But, sadly, it had not been maintained in a long time....found that the creator was had been off wiki for quite a while. When a monthly file is empty, a big blank hole exists. Not a good situation. I made a temporary fix to the portal by redirecting the current month entries to older pages that had already been created (see here... left a note on the creator's page. (I noted that he has been more active in the last month, so was in the process of writing a new note to him and on the military history U.S. task force page appealing for help when my computer had a glitch.)

The USAF portal is ok for January now, but I think this should be an effort by folks who are highly involved in USAF content. That said, I think that it definitely needs maintaining ... Do you know editors who would take it over? — ERcheck (talk) 13:04, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Left a second note on the USAF Portal talk page. — ERcheck (talk) 13:23, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Glad you got the note on the Military history talk page — I was going to do that when I got back home, but you beat me to it. So, too much vacation?? .... bored ... you have me laughing. There is never enough time off, always too much work to do. ;-) I find it ironic that I have a role in the USAF portal....even less that Bwmoll3 below... today's AF, yesterday's AF... "all I know, I learn from Wikipedia"....seriously, it seems as if almost everything that I write about and edit is something new I've learned, either from curiousity leading to Wiki edits or from the need to expand something in Wikipedia.
As for working on the USAF Portal, a couple of thoughts:
  • It should not look like the USMC Portal. Not sure how to quantify that, but, as each service has its own "personality", so, each Portal should have some uniqueness.
  • I'm for keeping the formatting that is currently in place...
  • Seems a good idea to keep discussions relating to the USAF portal on its talk page — hoping that others would join in.
  • If time does not permit, then redirecting, as I did, is a solution - with the exception of the News.
ERcheck (talk)

What is involved in that? Bwmoll3 (talk) 14:41, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind offer, but I'd rather keep at a low level and stay as a writer. I live in a very complex and technological world, and Wikipedia allows me to escape that and relax. I know a little bit about the AF (was in for 22 years) and in writing the articles I do, I get to share my knowledge of things as well.... Bwmoll3 (talk) 15:13, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Also if you notice I don't write a lot about the current AF, as I simply don't keep up with it. I retired over 10 years ago (1994), and the Air Force now is very very different than the one I served in. Bwmoll3 (talk) 15:15, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
My talk page is always open to anyone :) Bwmoll3 (talk) 15:18, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

What does maintaining a portal entail? Ndunruh (talk) 17:32, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, I'd have recommended Bwmoll3, but as it look like he's already declined I'll see what I can do with it. I'll probably have some follow-up questions as I get into it are you the right gut to direct those questions to? Ndunruh (talk) 22:17, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

New nav box/template

OK - see you've been busy. I'm not quite clear on the new nav box.

  • Which pages will it be on?
  • What is old template?
  • What is new template? etc.
  • Addition of the <noinclude> seems to be adding an extra blank line to the bottom of each box on the Portal. Can you fix that?

Nice - both the USMC Portal and the USAF Portal switched out smoothly. You were right, no response yet on the USAF Portal.

USMC generals

Yeah, its alright I was just wondering :) By the way, these new pictures with EGA and better quality are also mine, so thats actually good - still better then replaced by pictures from somebody else :D I found then on that webpage where there were almost all patterns from the world...administrator and author was really friendly and allowed me to use them :) --Novis-M (talk) 17:40, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Question about senior USMC non coms

THank you for your service. I wondered if there were anyway possible for a 23 year old in modern times to be a USMC Master Sergeant? Do you think that they could do this with 3 years of JROTC? Any insights based on your experiances would be graetly appreciated. Again, thank you for your service.Die4Dixie (talk) 07:19, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Question (again)

Hey, how is it going in the desert? :) Probably better than here in upstate New York - 16 inches of new snow today - isn't that crazy? :D jk, hope its safe over there...I just have another question about USMC. I've seen many pictures of the Marines of course, played many games (for example Call of Duty 4), etc, but I still don't understand Marines' equipment. Why most Marines in the combat have normal Modular Tactical Vest, while others have only load bearing vest without protection? I don't actually even know how is this modern vest called, if is it MOLLE or something else (maybe this [4], but I've usually seen different, dark green "vests", which look similar to this: [5], but thats the old one I guess). So simply my question is - except Modular Tactical Vest, what else do Marines wear, and why. Thanks for your time --Novis-M (talk) 18:03, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for reply. Its pretty cool that marines can actually "upgrade" their own equipment, I don't think US Army soldiers can do the same thing. So the current brown LBV is called the ILBE?
Now, the question is, why are the LBVs used? I always thought that Modular Tactical Vest was enough, because it has this pouch attachment ladder system, so what do you need the LBV for? --Novis-M (talk) 17:10, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Yeah thats what I was talking about, because I saw no reason to have the LBV in combat instead of Modular Tactical Vest, where you can attach anything. There should be a section written about the LBV in the ILBE article.
So ILBE is the whole category which includes its LBV and other stuff, same as the MOLLE is system, including its molle LBV, its components, etc etc, right? And as you said, the ILBE LBV is almost same as the MOLLE one, except the zipper so it looks like this [6] right? --Novis-M (talk) 18:09, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Okay, thanks a lot :) I just arrived to New York City, 2nd time in my life...its awesome...how is it to be deployed in Iraq by the way? Is Al-Asad in safe area? --Novis-M (talk) 00:14, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
