[edit]Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter
The Editing team has been working on the talk pages project. The goal of the talk pages project is to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. This project is the result of the Talk pages consultation 2019.
The team is building a new tool for replying to comments now. This early version can sign and indent comments automatically. Please test the new Reply tool.
- On 31 March 2020, the new reply tool was offered as a Beta Feature editors at four Wikipedias: Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian. If your community also wants early access to the new tool, contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF).
- The team is planning some upcoming changes. Please review the proposed design and share your thoughts on the talk page. The team will test features such as:
- an easy way to mention another editor ("pinging"),
- a rich-text visual editing option, and
- other features identified through user testing or recommended by editors.
To hear more about Editing Team updates, please add your name to the "Get involved" section of the project page. You can also watch these pages: the main project page, Updates, Replying, and User testing.

This issue of the Editing newsletter includes information the Talk pages project, an effort to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily.
- Reply tool: This is available as a Beta Feature at the four partner wikis (Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian Wikipedias). The Beta Feature is called "Discussion tools". The Beta Feature will get new features soon. The new features include writing comments in a new visual editing mode and pinging other users by typing
@
. You can test the new features on the Beta Cluster now. Some other wikis will have a chance to try the Beta Feature in the coming months. - New requirements for user signatures: Soon, users will not be able to save invalid custom signatures in Special:Preferences. This will reduce signature spoofing, prevent page corruption, and make new talk page tools more reliable. Most editors will not be affected.
- New discussion tool: The Editing team is beginning work on a simpler process for starting new discussions. You can see the initial design on the project page.
- Research on the use of talk pages: The Editing team worked with the Wikimedia research team to study how talk pages help editors improve articles. We learned that new editors who use talk pages make more edits to the main namespace than new editors who don't use talk pages.

Seven years ago this month, the Editing team offered the visual editor to most Wikipedia editors. Since then, editors have achieved many milestones:
- More than 50 million edits have been made using the visual editor on desktop.
- More than 2 million new articles have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
- The visual editor is increasingly popular. The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has increased every year since its introduction.
- In 2019, 35% of the edits by newcomers (logged-in editors with ≤99 edits) used the visual editor. This percentage has increased every year.
- Almost 5 million edits on the mobile site have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the mobile visual editor in 2018.
- On 17 November 2019, the first edit from outer space was made in the mobile visual editor. 🚀 👩🚀
- Editors have made more than 7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor, including starting 600,000 new articles in it. The 2017 wikitext editor is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can enable it in your preferences.

Reply tool
[edit]The Reply tool has been available as a Beta Feature at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The first analysis showed positive results.
- More than 300 editors used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than 7,400 replies during the study period.
- Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
- Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[1]

Reply tool
[edit]The Reply tool is available at most Wikipedias.
- The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out preference to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
- It is also available as a Beta Feature at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your wiki, you can request it by following these simple instructions.
Research notes:
- As of January 2021, more than 3,500 editors have used the Reply tool to post about 70,000 comments.
- We have preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. Junior Contributors who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[2]
- The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3% of edits did this during the last month.[3] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for Special:LintErrors.
- A large A/B test will start soon.[4] This is part of the process to offer the Reply tool to everyone. During this test, half of all editors at 24 Wikipedias will have the Reply tool automatically enabled, and half will not. You can still turn it on or off for your own account in Special:Preferences.
New discussion tool
[edit]The new tool for starting new discussions (new sections) will join the Discussion tools in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures at the end of January. You can try the tool for yourself.[5] You can leave feedback in this thread or on the talk page.
Next: Notifications
[edit]During Talk pages consultation 2019, editors said that it should be easier to know about new activity in conversations they are interested in. The Notifications project is just beginning. What would help you become aware of new comments? What's working with the current system? Which pages at your wiki should the team look at? Please post your advice at notifications-talk.
Editing news 2021 #2
[edit]Read this in another language • Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter
Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.
The key results were:
- Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
- The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.
These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.
Looking ahead
The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.
You can turn on "Discussion tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.
List of historical monuments in Qatar moved to draftspace
[edit]An article you recently created, List of historical monuments in Qatar, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Bkissin (talk) 14:35, 22 October 2021 (UTC)Speedy deletion nomination of List of historical monuments in Qatar
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on List of historical monuments in Qatar requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://qatarmuseumsstorageprd.blob.core.windows.net/media/documents/QM_heritage_sites_English.pdf. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit]Thanks for message.
You said and we are really stuck not being able to offer this... allow us to increase the content... Please help us to launch and promote the knowledge... guide us to the right place to get this list... The entire organizing team would so appreciate a positive outcome cto this problem... You have an obvious conflict of interest and you must declare it. If you work directly or indirectly for an organisation, or otherwise are acting on its behalf, you are very strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. If you are paid directly or indirectly by the organisation you are writing about, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Dezedien. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Dezedien|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If you are being compensated, please provide the required disclosure. Note that editing with a COI is discouraged, but permitted as long as it is declared. Concealing a COI can lead to a block. Please do not edit further until you respond to this message. Also read the following regarding writing an article:
- you must provide independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts and show that it meets the notability guidelines. Sources that are not acceptable include those linked to the organisation or company, press releases, YouTube, IMDB, social media and other sites that can be self-edited, logs, websites of unknown or non-reliable provenance, and sites that are just reporting what the company or organisation claims or interviewing its management. Note that references should be in-line so we can tell what fact each is supporting, and should not be bare urls. You had a few refercencecs, but most of your text was completely unsourced.
- The notability guidelines for organisations and companies have been updated. The primary criteria has five components that must be evaluated separately and independently to determine if it is met:
- significant coverage in
- independent,
- multiple,
- reliable,
- secondary sources.
- Note that an individual source must meet all four criteria to be counted towards notability. The museum is clearly notable, but we have to be able to verify what you have said about it.
- You must write in a non-promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic, with verifiable facts, not opinions or reviews. You need to be careful about giving judgements like impressive city wall and similar
- There shouldn't be any url links in the article, only in the "References" or "External links" sections.
- You must not copy text from elsewhere. Copyrighted text is not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. That applies even to pages created by you or your organisation, unless they state clearly and explicitly that the text is public domain. We require that text posted here can be used, modified and distributed for any purpose, including commercial; text is considered to be copyright unless explicitly stated otherwise. There are ways to donate copyrighted text to Wikipedia, as described here; please note that simply asserting on the talk page that you are the owner of the copyright, or you have permission to use the text, isn't sufficient.
- The fact that your text was largely created in a single edit without references or wikilinks is a clear indication that the text was copied from another source, and the plagiarism tool confirmed that source to be [https://qatarmuseumsstorageprd.blob.core.windows.net/media/documents/QM_heritage_sites_English.pdf this document. You said that you had permission to post the text here, but we have no way to verify that. We need to be able to verify that the site owners have released the text to be used, modified and distributed for any purpose, including commercial, but the copied document is not marked as public domain or as having a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported Licence or similar. If the site owners wish to donate their text and images they must mark the document as free to use for any purpose or take the steps described here
Before attempting to write an article again, please make sure that the topic meets the notability criteria linked above, and check that you can find independent third party sources. You must write in your own words unless the text is released to Wikipedia by its owners. You must also reply to the COI request above. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:59, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hello,
- Thank you @Jimfbleak: for your detailed answer,
- Yes I said we and us because I coch this team remotely from Algeria, as a volunteer without any remuneration (neither gifts nor money), my only consideration is the satisfaction of participants in this Contest : WLM in Qatar for the first time , and when I see fresh content of open knowledge.
- I reiterate that my main objective is to help promote and collect free knowledge, which I have been doing as since 2004 on Wikipedia and since 1988 outside Wikipedia.
- I will give you more information about me, I am a volunteer in the projects WP Ar and Fr often not much on the WP En, since 2005 you can easily check it and even the content I create, I organize with the Algerian user group of photo contests since 2013 voluntarily you can check it in Commons. I have recently a produced without any grant just with sponsors MOOC, a video clip about wikipedia and a conference in the NENA region, I help emerging groups to increase content as my activities in accordance about this new usergroup , I am still a volunteer and I remain, Getting paid to help add content directly is against my principles. and I fight it strongly in the Arabic wikipedia and as OTRS.
- I Specify that I am a volunteer in this project, the content added in this contest is not paid and notice that it is about historical monuments and not promotion of personalities, for organisation or companies
- As I had specified it is a country that participates for the first time being a founding member of the group AWUG is naturally that I help this new groups to launch this competition I coach them voluntarily.
- Note that this is just a list and I have proposed an alternative by deleting the text, I think it is sufficient for a possible publication.
- And the text in question I used only after authorization of its author.
- I asked you to help me to write it quickly, because there are 5 days left for the end of contest. and it comes at a really bad time, if it is not possible then I am sorry to say that despite the procedure that cannot be circumvented it is the community that decides,
- We are talking about a list of monuments and not about an organization or a company or a person
- You show me the notability related to institutions and here we are talking about a list of monuments.
- If you want to receive an email from the Qatar museum authorizing the use of the content provide us with an address or a place where to put this authorization. On my side without tender I will ask them by email for this institution to mention it on this PDF document.
- ;About sources :
- I have provided you with an official source of the Qatar Museum which manages and controls the heritage sites of Qatar and even a source of UNESCO, there is even for each site about a page on WPEN, no need for secondary sources in my opinion it is clear that this list has a verified reputation.
- ;Next step :
- To move forward if possible can you please ; Directly point me to a page where I can submit the request for the list recovery.
- Thank you very much for your help, I'm very grateful for this enlightenment and your kindness for a free and quality contents, I'm sure we can agree as soon as possible.
- Best,
- --Dezedien (talk) 09:17, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you for clarifying that you are not a paid editor; if the article is recreated, you should put {{connected contributor|user=Dezedien}} on the article talk page.
- The notability is not an issue, it's the copyright that is an obstacle. The procedure for donating text and images (if it's not possible to tag the original page) is here. The email must originate from the museum, not you, as I think you realise
- All the text needs references, even if it's all to the same source, and you must have wikilinks, eg World heritage Site, mosque etcs
- Unless I've misunderstood, you seemed to be suggesting keeping the images without the text, but the copyright applies to images too
- You could request a deletion review here, but it's unlikely that a copyright violation will be restored.
- Thanks @Jimfbleak: for your wide comprehension,
- I opt to recreate the page, with a revisited and sourced content I can do it by removing all the text as indicated, I keep the images because they are from commons, by FlickreviewR and it has been confirmed that it is licensed under the terms of the cc-by-2.0. and the majority comes from Flikr
- Will you just check with me quickly if this content does not violate any policies of English wikipedia, especially copyright. Before I can recreate the page.
- If it any risks for me a ban i prefer not to do it, i've never been banned i'll start now, with this list :)
- Find the link there : User:Dezedien/sandbox1
- Last things first. I don't think any other admin is following this thread, and I've accepted that you are acting in good faith.
- If the images are from Commons, and appropriately licensed there, you can use them here, but you will need some text since this is a draft article, not a gallery. It will need to stay as a draft until it's a proper article, but as I understand it that isn't a major problem for you Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:50, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- No i have absolutely no problem; For our activities teeses lists are very useful for photo contests or hackathons. and we can add a template to make it easy to upload photos for this or that site.
- It's a plus if we add a big description but it's ok if there is no description on just one sentence.
- On my side, I will add a small description on each line. The important thing is that it is in the right way to be a good content for next year's contest. I think i can recreate the page, if you agree with that content. like that List of cultural assets of Algeria
