The stats you're talking about

Hiya. I live in England so I can pick up League Express every week in physical newspaper form. If you need me to, I can get stats like sin bins, missed goals, sendings off and "on reports" no problem. If you need stats about old SL seasons though, then League Express publish a yearbook for each season which gives all the details written in the match reports. I don't think they have a back catalogue, but there's a few knocking around on eBay/Amazon. I have access to all Super League seasons, apart from 1996, 1997 and 2001. Thanks for getting in touch! I really appreciate your offer of help, but I wouldn't want you to buy it just to help me out - it'd make me feel more comfortable if you normally purchased it anyway. I will do my best to keep up using Sporting Life at this stage. It's kind of tricky because if time gets away from me a bit and I can't catch some information up, then all I can do is say "do you happen to have this issue" when it might be too late. However it is good to know you have access to it. On past seasons, I have the full compendium of Rothmans books (1980/81 to 1999), as well as the League Express yearbooks from '96 to 2003. Over the next year or so I'll be endeavouring to add as much as I can from the Rothmans volumes to the site, however the really disappointing thing about them (and the League Express ones) is that they don't contain match-by-match appearances. I regularly scour the 'net for newspaper archives in the north of England but haven't had much luck, I can only find the London Times (and it's hopeless for RL). Are there any newspapers in the UK you know of which have a history of regularly publishing the full teams, and always have? That would be a start. Nah, they don't cover rugby league down south in the capital. If there was going to be any newspaper that would cover all rugby league matches to that detail then it would probably be the tabloids: The Sun and the Daily Mirror, neither of which contain detailed information like yellow/red cards, or who was playing. I've looked at the League Express yearbooks and you can get the individual match appearances in the Round by Round sections. For example, I can tell you that on 21 April 2003, Richie Barnett captained Hull FC to a 46-18 victory over Halifax playing in the traditional #4 position (centre), Kirk Yeamen was sin-binned for fighting in the 62nd minute, and that Steve Prescott kicked 7/11 goals (Gilette Rugby League Yearbook 2003-2004, p231). The Rothmans doesn't have this detail, sadly.

Yeah, I've just checked through and interestingly 1996, then 1997/98 don't have appearances, then 1998/99 does, then 1999/2000 doesn't, then from 2000/01 onwards they all do. I had already previously extracted the appearances from 1998 onwards from rugby-league-world.com. Thanks also for the newspaper references, I will look into those. Hi again, not sure if you're still watching this page. But I've come across an unusual quirk with regards to Salford's home ground, The Willows. It seems that the official Super League website, as well as Sky Sports that I know of, are referring to it as The Pavillion. In doing some research all I can ascertain is that the Pavillion is the address of the Salford club itself, but no mention anywhere of a name change. What does League Express say? And more importantly, do you know anything about why the official site might be referring to it as the Pavillion all of a sudden? Azkatro (talk) 06:57, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for not replying sooner, I hadn't noticed this. I've been noticing Sky Sports Live Centre doing that as well, and to be perfectly honest, I've no idea why. The ground has always been referred to as "The Willows" as far as I know. Even the club bar has "The Willows" as its name. Sky Sports have previously got ground names wrong, for example, it claims the SL Grand Final last year was held at Knowsley Road when obviously it was held at Old Trafford, so I'd just put "The Willows".
