Noam Bettan

Hello, you can look at the relevance of this article Noam Bettan, for me it has them. --Acartonadooopo (talk) 17:05, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Your mass redirections

I think it is a shame that a) you couldn't be bothered to ask article creators or do anything to attract the attention of people with the articles on their watchlists, and b) you really should leave the categories. DuncanHill (talk) 13:18, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

  • @DuncanHill: The purpose is to stop pointless AfD debates on stubs about questionably notable features, and to pull together information on these features into the context of a parent article such as a large island, a mountain range, a major glacier etc. I have been as open as I can. I asked for comments on WikiProject Antarctica, asked two of the most prolific stub creators for comments, discussed with two admins, and presumably the stub creators are watching the stubs if they still have any interest in them. But nothing is lost. The information is all preserved in brief list entries like
    Wright Peak
73°40′S 94°32′W / 73.667°S 94.533°W / -73.667; -94.533. Small rock peak 1,510 metres (4,950 ft) high located 0.5 nautical miles (0.93 km; 0.58 mi) south of Sutley Peak. Mapped by the University of Minnesota-Jones Mountains Party, 1960-61, which named it for Herbert E. Wright, Jr., glacial geologist, University of Minnesota, who was advisor to the party and visited Antarctica in the 1961-62 season.
Anyone who wants to restore and expand an article like this just has to undo the redirect and start adding content, as the edit note says: "Redirect to parent, which holds all the available content. Article could be restored and expanded if more material shows up." I am not deleting any information, just organizing it. As for keeping categories on redirects, I cannot see any scenario where that would have value. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:45, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
For categorisation see WP:SUBTOPICCAT. I think you should also use Template:R with possibilities. As for "I have been as open as I can" no you haven't - "presumably the stub creators are watching the stubs if they still have any interest in them" yes I am still watching those I created, and no you did absolutely nothing to inform me or anyone else watching them, until you actually went ahead. "The purpose is to stop pointless AfD debates on stubs about questionably notable features" - do you have any evidence of that happening? because I've not seen it on any of those on my watchlist. DuncanHill (talk) 13:52, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
WP:SUBTOPICCAT is a suggestion, and applies to things with well known names that may be expanded into full articles. As far as I can tell, most of the small Antarctic features are not at all well known, and the list entry holds all there is to be said about them. Very few will turn back into full articles. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:05, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
{{R with possibilities}} should only be used if there is some sign that there are possibilities. If a stub has anything more than a copy of the USBGN or GNIS entry, I do not turn the article into a redirect. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:05, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
I have no way of telling who is watching an article. The watchers will see my changes, and can object to any particular redirect if they feel that the topic has potential as an article. So far, no editors have. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:05, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
I started this project because I was involved in an AfD debate on a stub, where the information seemed worth keeping but the feature did not seem at all notable. The solution was to merge to parent. As I work through the stubs, I sometimes come across a redirect from an AfD that was closed as merge, usually just a bald redirect to the parent name rather than to a section. And sometimes I come across a redlink for a deleted stub. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:24, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
From a user's point of view, the redirects are useful. Wright Peak (Antarctica) takes them straight to the information that was in the stub, but they can scroll up and down to see nearby features, and maybe they will find something about the geology, glaciology, etc. of the parent feature. A stand-alone article does less to encourage browsing. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:24, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
You don't need to know who is watching an article. You can post on the talk page and EVERYONE WHO IS WATCHING THE ARTICLE WILL SEE IT. If you watchlisted the redirects you would have seen objections before, because I have objected in the past when restoring categories. DuncanHill (talk) 15:21, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
Launching talk page discussions and watching all the redirects seems over-elaborate for a simple process like this. So far no editor has objected on my talk page to any of the thousands of redirects. Anyone can undo a redirect and expand the article if they have more information. They do not have to tell me, but if they did I would encourage them, and add a {{main}} link from the list entry in the parent article. Aymatth2 (talk) 15:51, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
@DuncanHill: I will leave the categories, going forward. I do not see how that would be useful, but can't see what harm it would do. Aymatth2 (talk) 11:57, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
I notice that the categorization is quite erratic. Thus the Behrendt Mountains are in eastern Ellsworth Land, but Mount Caywood, Mount Brice, Thomson Summit and Mount Suggs are in Palmer Land to the north, while Mount Abrams is in the Biscoe Islands of Graham Land, far to the north. Looks like a duplicate, can you merge?♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:24, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

Done. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:47, 15 June 2024 (UTC)

Delighted to see you back consistently editing again. It is staggering how much work needs doing still. Burundi appears to have very poor coverage even by African standards on here. The Collines of Burundi ought to have a Category and navigation templates. Thanks for all you've done with sorting out Antarctica!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:26, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

Thanks. I am a bit bored with Antarctica. Merging stubs is very mechanical, and there are thousands of them.
Burundi has a hopeless lack of coverage, but it is hard to find sources. It is poor and politics are dangerous. I have started articles on senators and governors, in the top of the political elite, and sometimes can't find much more than their party and when they took office.
I suspect that with many of the collines there are no sources at all, other than map-based. A lot of the population lives by subsistence agriculture, so they live beside their fields and have no money to spend. A colline may be just a patchwork of trees, fields and scattered houses with no real settlements. Aymatth2 (talk) 17:02, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

line-height

Hello Aymatth2!

I read your userpage.

I wondered if it would be helpful for you to increase the line-height in the editor.

You can test it by adding: #wpTextbox1 {line-height: 2.0;} to Special:MyPage/common.css.

This is just an example of course, you could tweak the value. 1.0 is the normal line-height so this doubles it.

Polygnotus (talk) 20:15, 25 August 2024 (UTC)

Thanks, but I don't think that would make much difference. It is fairly easy to position on a line, harder on a point within a line, but I can do that too. It just slows me down a bit. It has been quite a long time since I noticed someone removing line breaks. Why they do it is beyond me. Imagine writing computer code with no line breaks! Replaceable non-free use File:Luigi Calori.JPG

Thanks for uploading File:Luigi Calori.JPG. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file's talk page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:2007 establishments in Burundi indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
