Welcome to Wikipedia. We welcome and appreciate your contributions, including your edits to List of dark cabaret artists, but we cannot accept original research. Original research also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. Thank you. Ridernyc (talk) 19:24, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Grace Jones, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page 7 Day Weekend (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

I am going to add an image of Spanish Town, Jamaica to Grace's article, this is from Wiki commons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)

That's fine, as long as the image isn't a copyright violation. --John (talk) 16:25, 17 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon In a recent edit, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. --John (talk) 05:31, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Please make sure to include an edit summary. Please provide one before saving your changes to an article, as the summaries are quite helpful to people browsing an article's history. Thanks!--John (talk) 16:46, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. --John (talk) 22:11, 16 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've removed the material you copied and pasted from here; are there other copyright violations in material you have added to Wikipedia? Obviously we cannot use material like this. If I see you doing anything like this again I will have to block you. Please don't. --John (talk) 05:31, 17 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your help in this article; however, before you insist on removing anything else I have added to this page, please hear me out. I took the liberty of contacting the writers of the material that was in the section "Music and voice", and asked them if they would like to contribute their material, they said "yes", "copy and paste" what I would like, but link the material to their page, the same thing with the pictures I added in the section applies. You also removed a picture that I found from Wiki Commons? And the recent edits of the titles I made in the biography section? I'm not a plagiarist, just a devoted fan, trying to add a lot more information to Grace's page than what it already had. My email is Tony.R.Vario @ Gmail.com, please refer to emailing before making such drastic decisions like this, also I can provide you with the communication between the rightful artists, so we can keep what it was that put on the page. If you would, please put what I had back up on the page, thank you.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the reply. There are two problems with what you have done. The first is intellectual property. Wikipedia is released under a free licence and is free for all to use, even for commercial purposes, but needs to be attributable to its authors. Even if what you have said above is true (and I have no reason to doubt you) about the authors having given their permission to you, do they realise they have signed away the copyright on their work for evermore? How will they feel if they see "their" work being reused by others or even sold for gain in the future? By adding someone else's work to Wikipedia under your name you have also committed plagiarism, even if the copyright problems (which are major) can be ironed out. It doesn't help that you did not explain what you had done until I challenged you either. All four images you have added were also copyright violations; you cannot claim somebody else's work as your own.
The second problem is one of style; even if all the above problems were fixed, we still couldn't use the sort of writing you added. We use a neutral voice which is very different from the sort of writing that you were adding. Here's an example: The swell of "La Vie en rose", popularized by chanteuse Edith Piaf, saw Jones flexing her rich espresso tones. This is not Wikipedia's style and this could never be included in an article unless perhaps as a brief quote. The writer whose work you have used is writing in American English and the article is in British English. There are other problems too.
Here's a constructive suggestion; never, never, copy and paste material into an article. Instead, summarise, paraphrase, and attribute your sources. I hope that makes sense. --John (talk) 11:24, 17 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you John, While all of this makes sense, I guess I am a bit envious to see the body of text in Madonna's and Cher's articles, why not Grace Jones? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)
I've worked a bit on the Madonna article. It isn't copied and pasted from other sources but sumarised from them. Do you see what I mean? --John (talk) 16:24, 17 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've just removed another copyvio image from the article, two images without a valid fair use rationale, a chunk of what seems like copyvio text, and a tabloid source. None of these are permitted. Are there more undisclosed copyvios in the material you've added? Also, why nominate this as a Good Article? It isn't close to the standard. --John (talk) 05:34, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • And we can't use tabloid sources to verify material on living people. Please do not do this again either. --John (talk) 10:28, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You really like to people's lives miserable, don't you? All the hard work I put in for this article, and all you can do is tear it apart. How can the picture of 'Portfolio, Fame, and Muse' be a copyright violation when the actual artist posted it on the site for me? I don't understand, You told me you contributed to the Madonna article, why don't you help me with this one? Look at the Annie Lennox article and you tell me why her pictures are still on there, and you're taking mine down. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Lennox Please, give me an explanation, is Wikipedia prejudice against Grace Jones?

No, Wikipedia is not prejudiced against Jones. We are however deeply prejudiced against copyright violations, against changing UK English to US, run-on sentences, and poor formatting like "80's" and "Jones'". The pictures on the other article seem appropriately licensed. You cannot use album covers and say they are your own work. I am going to step away from this for a while and ask someone else to talk to you now. --John (talk) 15:48, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Last and Final warning

[edit]

Hi Avario87. First, I appreciate you trying to help with the project, and that you've been polite. BUT - you need to listen to what you're being told by other experienced editors or you WILL be blocked from editing. Specifically: I've been reviewing your efforts on the Grace Jones article. You really need to read and understand a few things before you continue editing, or you will lose the ability to edit. Let me give you a list of things that are absolutely vital to understand before you go any further:

  1. WP:BLP - This is critical that you read and fully understand as it is one of the projects most important policies. We value and respect living people on this project, and even if you are a huge fan, we are still an encyclopedia and not a promotional venue for people.
  2. Wikipedia:Plagiarism - also a very important guideline. You can NOT simply copy text from a website and paste it into an article. That would violate our
  3. Wikipedia:Copyrights policy, and Wikipedia:Copyright violations can not be accepted by our project due to legal ramifications.
  4. WP:RS. You need to understand that you can't just take information from any site you can find on the Internet and use that to justify what you're putting into Wikipedia.
  5. WP:NPOV. This is an encyclopedic principle that our project works on.

Now, I see that User:John has spent a great deal of time trying to help you understand these things - so now it is up to you to go back and actually READ what he has typed. If you are not sure about something, ASK. You may also want to read Wikipedia:Fancruft to get a better understanding of why your editing is being reverted and changed. We appreciate your good faith efforts to improve the article, but you need to follow the policies and guidelines established by our project to continue. If you feel that our rules are too complicated, perhaps you would be more comfortable creating your very own Grace Jones site at Wikia.com, and in a few years once you have a better understanding of how our complex project at Wikipedia works returning after sharpening your skills in this type of writing. Either way, you need to stop editing in the way that you have been; because you are at the point of being blocked for your inability to conform to our rules. I hope that doesn't need to happen, and I hope this helps. — Ched :  ?  01:26, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ched, thank you for assuming good faith, as it IS good faith. First, I would like to apologize for my actions. I have spent a great deal of time working on this project, as I think it definitely needs to be approved and recognized by Wikipedia, as Madonna' and Annie Lennox's articles are. I can now say that I am done with editing Jones' page as I see it is finally at the point where I would like to be, in hopes that it does not violate the site's policies and procedures. If you would take a few minutes and look over my editions, I would be most appreciative, and if you would take a few minutes after that, to let me know how I did. I tried my absolute best to use my own original wording, sourcing each paragraph added. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)

I have a question for you, would it still be a copyright violation if I were to take written information from Jones's disco articles, and put them in her article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)

  • Since 24 May, when you said "I am done with editing Jones' page as I see it is finally at the point where I would like to be", you have continued to edit the article and have made several hundred more edits. Why is that? --John (talk) 19:09, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think that a prolific entertainer as Jones should have more body in her article, I recently noticed the amount of information that was included in her discography article that could be incorporated in her actual article. I also have obsessive compulsive disorder, and I felt the need to go back those several hundred times and make edits. I don't want to violate any copyright laws, and I have been trying to use the language that is required to edit articles. (Jones's, flavour, colour).— Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)

  • I understand. I specialise in copyediting. When you think you are done adding content, let me know and I will copyedit. We can't use Wikipedia articles as references. YouTube and Amazon are also not valued as sources. See WP:IRS for more detail. Thank you for all the work you have done. --John (talk) 22:18, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John, thank you for the support, I believe I am done. I really would love to have this article nominated, locked and edited like Madonna, Bowie, and Annie Lennox. Is that possible?

I also want to apologize for lashing out, I was having a bad day, you're just doing what you're expected to do, and I appreciate you working with me, I really have no intentions on violating copyrights, and I would hate to be blocked from editing, my goal is to make this as article as scholarly as possible.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)

John, I am all done. Do you think we could make it as a 'good article', and even lock some of it like Madonna, and David Bowie? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)

Since you left this message you have continued to add material, some of it dubiously sourced. I have copyedited the prose, removed poor sources like YouTube, and trimmed unsourced fancruft. I also removed your Good Article nomination as the article is not ready for it. If you wanted to get this to GA the main thing would be to work on finding more good sources (books and magazines) and also to work on the quality of the prose. Finally we do not "lock" articles except in certain rare cases. Oh, and could you please sign your posts in discussions by typing ~~~~ after them? Thanks for all your work, even though it has generated work for me. --John (talk) 21:29, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Grace Jones

[edit]

As I said above, what this article needs now is more quality sources added to it. The Videos section for example is almost unsourced. What it emphatically does not need is any more tinkering. It is quite a lot of work for me to go through and fix all your errors. I have therefore undone your recent additions, with the exception of one typo you corrected. You were warned above by an uninvolved admin not to continue adding unsourced, copyvio or poorly written material to the article. Could you please take that warning on board? There are another 3 million articles you could look at. Good sourcing is what we need.--John (talk) 16:40, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Stop icon This is your last warning. The next time you violate Wikipedia's biographies of living persons policy by inserting unsourced or poorly sourced defamatory or otherwise controversial content into an article or any other Wikipedia page, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. --John (talk) 14:56, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Forget about it John, I'm deactivating my account as Wikipedia is racist. I have done so much research, for what? so it could be turned down by you? You're probably some college professor that was fired for your bad attitude, and now resort to Wikipedia for your only input. See ya! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)
If you change your mind I will be happy to help you. But remember, we cannot use unreferenced or poorly referenced material, especially on living people. Best of luck whatever you decide. --John (talk) 17:59, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

John, I asked you to help me a while ago, many times actually. You never got back to me. You said you were responsible for making Madonna's page a good article, why not give Grace (the woman who inspired her) the same regard? I had valid sources, from old interviews that were recently published, and archived newspaper articles, those to me are valid sources. I am baffled. You win, I am going to stop editing Grace's article, because no matter what I do, it will never be what I want it to be. Are you willing to help me make this into article that could be nominated as a "good article"? I can provide you with the sources, and you can add them into your Wikipedia language?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Avario87 (talkcontribs)

Your GA nomination for the Sally Kellerman article

[edit]

Hi Avario, I notice you're very interested in helping articles reach Good status, which is great. However I'm also concerned that you're nominating articles without fully understanding the criteria for a GA. The Sally Kellerman article in particular is still a long, long way away from GA status -- there's no information on her personal life at all, for instance, and for that matter no real idea of her professional one beyond a few key roles.

I'd like to suggest, strongly, that you withdraw the nomination for now (easily done by simply removing the template from the article talkpage) and request assistance from the WikiProject Biography arts & entertainment work group to help improve the article. In the meanwhile, you can also be reviewing the GA criteria, and perhaps a few performer GAs, to better learn what an article of this type needs -- it isn't just information, it also involves the way it's presented. Sockpuppet investigation

[edit]

Hi. An editor has opened an investigation into sockpuppetry by you. Sockpuppetry is the use of more than one Wikipedia account in a manner that contravenes community policy. The investigation is being held at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Avario, where the editor who opened the investigation has presented their evidence. Please make sure you make yourself familiar with the guide to responding to investigations, and then feel free to offer your own evidence or to submit comments that you wish to be considered by the Wikipedia administrator who decides the result of the investigation. If you have been using multiple accounts (in a manner contrary to Wikipedia policy), please go to the investigation page and verify that now. Leniency is usually shown to those who promise not to do so again, or who did so unwittingly, but the abuse of multiple accounts is taken very seriously by the Wikipedia community.

Then please ask an admin on what to do to avoid being blocked. Kailash29792 (talk) 01:55, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Avario87, just checking if you've commented on the discussion here about you on Admin Noticeboard beyond your initial comment. It probably won't get totally ignored and you really should speak up there. Besides just saying what you want to do, you need to explain your understanding of why your original account was blocked and how you'll avoid that in the future. I know, it was blocked a long time ago, but it will only help. Good luck! Ravensfire (talk) 00:06, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cathy Moriarty

[edit]

Thank you for thanking me, I was going to use a scene from Kindergarten Cop, because I loved it, but I thought it would be better to have a more popular film with her as a leading actress.

Best wishes and kind regards Joe Vitale 5 (talk) 15:26, 25 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Do you usually let us know if our articles in GA standing after your edits? Avario87 (talk)

Also, I noticed that you suggested citations - are citations necessary to describe the characters she has played? Avario87 (talk)

No probs. I'm not a GA reviewer so I don't usually make that judgement. However, especially since it's a biography of a living person, this article is nowhere near GA standard. Several paragraphs of text need to be properly referenced from third-party, independent sources. I've marked the areas where citations are needed and added {{refimprove}} to attract some help. Otherwise I just fix the prose.
Anything that can be challenged should have a citation (see WP:BLP); in this case you can probably visit the film articles and use the refs there. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 04:12, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
