Some tips to help you out!

[edit]

Hi Audrey202, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)

First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.

Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: User:Audrey202/sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.

Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between <ref></ref> tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type {{reflist}} on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.

Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you.

One last thing to keep as a motto: "It's better to write one good, well-referenced, nicely-presented article than it is to create fifty unreferenced one-line stubs!" Pjposullivan (talk) 18:21, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Bartholomew Brethertons

[edit]

Hi Audrey202, thank you for your work on articles about your family. It has been incredibly helpful. I wrote the articles on Loyola Hall and St. Bartholomew's Church in Rainhill and I was struggling to find out, from the few sources I could find, how the property was passed down and which Bartholomew Bretherton was which. Thanks to you, it is so much clearer now.

I really hope you stick around on Wikipedia and continue to improve it. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks again, Pjposullivan (talk) 15:55, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank to the person(s) who edited the Bartholomew Bretherton pages. They are so much better now and it's all correct. Hope all the wrong information all over the Internet citing Wikipedia as their reference picks up on the changes. If you want to insert a bibliography for Bartholomew Bretherton (1775 - 1857) it should read "The family historical papers of the Bretherton and Atkinson families". Just one more thing. I have an actual photograph of Bartholomew Bretherton (1775 - 1857) taken in the 1850's by Griffen photographers of St Helen's . How complicated is it to insert a photograph? I expect it would be beyond me, but just wondering. Audrey202 (talk) 22:40, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Audrey, thank you. Adding the photo on to Wikipedia is quite straightforward and I am sure that it is not beyond you. Just scan or use a digital camera to make an image of the photograph you wish to add to the article. You can add it to Wikipedia by clicking on 'Upload file' in the left margin, it's in the 'Tools' section. After this, follow the instructions and click on 'This is a free work' and then 'This work is so old its copyright has expired'. After going through the form it will give you a file name for the image which you can add to the Wikipedia article. Any questions, please feel free to ask on my talk page. Happy editing! I tried but I think I sent it to the wrong place. Might try again another time. Thanks for your help. Audrey202 (talk) 05:08, 17 April 2014 (UTC) I have done it, but don't know how to add the caption. I thought it would come in automatically. Can someone do it. here is the file name.[reply]

I think I'm just about done with editing unless something new turns up. Thanks everyone. Can someone edit the blurb for Bartholomew Bretherton (jockey), which still comes up with the wrong dates on. Should be 1812 - 1866. Audrey202 (talk) 03:47, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A family member pointed out that I misspelled Griffin (photographer). It should be an 'i' not an 'e'. I have corrected where I can but if there is anywhere else where I might have recorded it incorrectly can you fix it? Audrey202 (talk) 21:31, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a bit to the Bartholomew Bretherton (jockey) but something has gone wrong with the page and I can't fix it. I need someone with more expertise than me to help please. Audrey202 (talk) 08:39, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it, see the bottom section on this page. Thanks, Matty.007 09:01, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much.

Teahouse talkback: you've got messages!

Hi Audrey, the issue with the formatting was the spaces you left: we don't tab/put spaces before paragraphs, nor between references (which go one after the other, not each one on a new line). All the best, Matty.007 08:39, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'm learning all the time. Audrey202 (talk) 10:08, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. If you need any more help, feel free to ping me with {{U|Matty.007}} or on my talkpage, or go to the Teahouse again. All the best, Matty.007 15:47, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've added some more information to this page regarding the "1836 Grand Liverpool Steeplechase". Having reread it, I feel that I have it in the wrong place. I don't think it belongs under the heading FAMILY. Perhaps I should have entered a new section "BIOGRAPHY" above and put it there. However, having had problems with formatting previously, I am scared to try to enter anything else and put in any spaces in case the same thing happens. What do you think? Audrey202 (talk) 03:34, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Replied on my talk page. Thanks, Matty.007 17:50, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
