Earth Day article improvements

[edit]

Although some of your edits to Earth Day looked good, such a large change to an article that has been the subject of major controversy should be discussed on the talk page first, I think. The new information also needs references and the encyclopedic content that doesn't fit (such as the equinoctal Earth Day section) needs to be improved or moved to another article. Adding Senator Nelson's staff who did some of the early work is a good idea and is easily referenced. However, the change to the lead paragraph was, I think, incorrect. Nelson's own discussion of Earth Day origins don't say that he originated the name in 1962, just that he realized that things ad to change.--Hjal (talk) 02:11, 6 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Attoman (talk) 02:44, 6 April 2008 (UTC) Hjal thanks for the welcome. In this particular instance I am an original source for the 1969-70 Earth Day events (not sure how I can securely prove this fact within exposing myself to people such as the conspiracy nuts I saw in earlier comments). I was one of the small group of people working in the national office.[reply]

I have not tried to duck the normal wiki process- I just don't understand it yet so have patience. I very much agree that the page should be frozen around Earth Day, given the mess it was in I'm glad it getting some attention now.

The article was such a mess that I did a minimum clean-up. It really isn't done, its still scattered and hang dog but maybe that's how wiki articles are. I am working with the Senate Historian to try to chase down some of my fellow Earth Day cohorts and expect to have more details later this year. However I don't believe 1969-70 should be over emphasized in this article. As far as the Nelson Earth Day quote I trying to chase down the reputed Earth Day memo to JFK. I am more then willing tnat the reference should be removed as should the other reference (which I removed) claiming another had coined the pharse a couple months before the first Earth Day. Earth Day effort started in 1969 we were working away with the Earth Day term and the Environmental Teach-In term from the begining which for me and the other "kids" was about October 1969. • Regarding your discussion about splitting the Earth Day article, I generally agree. I have some suggestions. There is usually no discussion of articles being drafted in sandboxes unless you invite people and give them the link. If you use the main sandbox, whatever you put there will get overwritten by a subsequent user--it's just for experimenting. You can create your own generic sandbox at User:Attoman/Sandbox by clicking on that link and then starting to enter text in the new edit box; then put a link at the Earth Day talk page when you want comments. First, I would like to sugget that you follow the links in the welcome message above and learn the WP policies and some of the guidelines and Manual of Style. WP is not a place for John McConnell's people and Gaylord Nelson's people to create articles based on personal memories--it's almost forbidden. Since they are both clearly notable, however, there's no problem that I know of with people who have personal knowledge of them adding to articles, as long as they can show reliable, verifiable sources for the new content. Books, newspaper and journal articles are good. Government sources can be good for elected officials. If you don't object, after asking for comments on a new article name, I'll go ahead and separate the equinoctal Earth Day into its own article, with a disambiguation link from each to the other. The lead will need to be changed to reflect the single subject covered. Finally, although the first Earth Day of April 22, 1970, could probably support an article all by itself, it works well as part of the history section of Earth Day as well, unless the whole article gets too big.--Hjal (talk) 04:06, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
