Hey you
[edit]Thanks for adding a picture to the King Armored Car article and categorizing it. How do you categorize articles? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by MKnight9989 (talk • contribs) 13:09, 10 May 2007 (UTC).
- Hi MKnight. Welcome. Well, if you are asking about how we do categorize articles technically than i have to refer you to How do I add an article to a category?. If it was not the case than the way i proceed is the following:
- I read the into of the article and find that it is about an Armoured fighting vehicle.
- I go to that article and check in which category it is contained. The answer found is Category:Armored fighting vehicles
- But in this category there are other more specified sub-categories such as Category:Armored fighting vehicles by era and Category:Armored fighting vehicles by nationality
- I then choose Category:Interwar armored fighting vehicles and Category:Interwar armored fighting vehicles as the more appropriate categories for the article. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 13:25, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
KAC
[edit]I was wondering if you could do me a favor. I need someone to check my article King Armored Car to see if it could be raised to Start-Class Status. I noticed that you were the one who put the notice up on the talk page for the article, so I was wondering if you could check it out; it would be unethical for me to do it. --MKnight9989 14:37, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- No worries. Well, let's go step by step according to the "Start" critereon:
- The article has a meaningful amount of good content? --> Yes. It talks about who used it first. Where, etc...
- But it is still weak in many areas. --> True. Referencing. Only one reference is used. We need more. It needs a {{Infobox Weapon}}.
- it has at least one serious element of gathered materials, including any one of the following:
- A particularly useful picture or graphic. ---> Yes.
- Multiple links that help explain or illustrate the topic. --> Not enough.
- A subheading that fully treats an element of the topic. --> Nope.
- Multiple subheadings that indicate material that could be added to complete the article. --> Nope.
- In brief, it should look somehow like this article. Just make a small effort and you could reach the "Start" quality. Cheers. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 15:03, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Guided torpedo
[edit]Hey,
sure thing - I'm always happy to help out. :) You can create the redirect yourself. Just create the page like you normally would and just add #REDIRECT [[target]] (where target is the article's name without a URL or any markup). There are some things to keep in mind though (namely this and a few guidelines) but that shouldn't be a problem in this case.
Undeletion, on the other hand, requires administrator assistance. Normally, the proper place to request undeletion would be deletion review but it's very unlikely that a regular undeletion request would be approved. Instead, what you want is 'history-only undeletion'. You should probably familiarize yourself with the deletion policy though before you do that. I admit it's a bit bureaucratic but it's necessary to keep the place going.
You know what? If you want, I can probably just get the content for you instead and save you the hassle. How does that sound?
Cheers, -- Seed 2.0 14:05, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- Great. :) It might take a while since I'm a bit busy at the moment. I'll message you when I got it. Cheers -- Seed 2.0 14:27, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
I appreciate the help alot Seed. If ya ever need help with an article or someone to review an article, just ask me. --MKnight9989 14:31, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Here's the content:
A torpedo is a weapon used mainly by submarines, patrol boats, ASW aircraft, and destroyers. A guided torpedo is a complex, yet highly effective weapon. Before a torpedo is launched, the target must be 'boxed in'. What this means is the enemy (most likely a submarine) will be detected by sonar in any direction it goes. The torpedo's mate (or a senior officer) will set an initial search depth at which the enemy submarine is estimated to be operating. The torpedo will start with passive sonar, simply trying to detect the submarine. Once the torpedo's passive sonar has detected something, it will swich over to active sonar and will begin to track the target. This is called 'pinging'. At this point, the submarine has probably started evasive manuevers and may have even deployed a noisemaker. The torpedo, if not fooled by the noise maker, will do it's best to home in on the enemy sub.
Please don't repost it like that, of course, but as the original author you're free to reuse the content within other articles. I'm sure Seed can give you advice on sourcing and how to write a good article. Cheers. --kingboyk 21:12, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- I'd be happy to. Just one quick thing I forgot to mention earlier: I'll be on wikibreak for the next few weeks so I won't be editing much. I will however still be checking in periodically. If you have any questions or need anything, feel free to just leave me a message. I might not see it until a couple of days later but I promise I'll get back to you. Seed 2.0 21:55, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
- Hey, good job on the merge. :)
- Just a small suggestion (I don't know if you knew this -- if so, you can safely ignore the rest of this run-on sentence ;): instead of using a separate section to list sources, you can also use the <ref> tag. Doing that has a few advantages: first of all, it adds individual footnotes that make it easier for a third party to verify exactly what part of the article references what citation. Another advantage is that it may save you some typing because the using <ref> tags allows you to reuse citations. Mediawiki, the software that Wikipedia runs on, can also take care of automatically generating and maintaining a references section so you don't have to worry about the numbering or using sources more than once.
- The old {{ref}} and {{note}} templates that you may have come across basically do the same but aren't as easy to read (technically, it's not even deprecated but the "new" <ref> system is pretty much the standard way to add footnotes). I guess, technically, that wasn't even a run-on sentence but a run-on paragraph. Oh well. ;) Cheers Seed 2.0 13:47, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
Sure. I agree - it's looks a bit complex (especially with the cite templates but we'll get to that). The basics are really simple though: just type a <ref> where you want the footnote. That tells the software that the test within the <ref> tags should not be displayed. Within the <ref> tag, you're free to use basically any text which will appear in the footnote. After you're done, all you have to do is close the tag (ie. use the </ref> tag) which tells the software that the text that follows that text isn't part of the footnote.
If you're going to use a citation more than once, you can also give the reference a name (ie. <ref name=something>. That way, you only have to type it out once and the software adjusts the numbering accordingly.
The Mediawiki software doesn't know where the references are supposed to go though. Usually they should be at the bottom of the article but since there are exceptions, it doesn't automatically insert them. Instead you have to specify where you want them using the <references/> tag. The way those references are rendered by the software can be modified as well but the standard layout should be fine in most cases.
That's pretty much all you need to know about the <ref> tag. The only other important thing is that you need to remember to close them or you'll end up with strange results (ie. for every <ref> there needs to be a </ref>).
There are also some other ways to cite sources (Harvard, inline). One of those other ways are the {{cite}} templates, which you can see here. Those are good if you're working with a lot of scientific citations, particularly journals because you always end up with a properly formatted source. They pretty much work just like regular <ref> citations but are probably a bit overkill if you just want to have a regular, "hey, this is where I got this from" cite.
Hope that helps a bit. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask though (Wikipedia is a pretty policy-rich environment and when you work a lot with policy, there's a risk that you can get ahead of yourself ;). Cheers -- Seed 2.0 17:30, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Hey! I noticed your post on the talk page of the Counter Vandalism Unit. What kinds of tips are you looking for> Do you use Firefox? If you have any specific questions (example: How do you find vandalism?), then feel free to ask me in my talk page. --Mschel 13:26, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
No I use internet explorer. I just found some vandalism in the article Bong. When I tried to save the page after reverting the vandalism, someone else beat me to it! Oh well. I'm just glad it's been taken care of. See, I use a school computer so I can't download programs such as vandalproof and such, so I was just looking for generic tips on finding vandalism. Common world war two infrantry weapons
[edit]I noticed You have added The FG42, Sturmgewehr44 and the gewehr 43. The problom is these were very weapons almost never issued. if u read the title It says common weapons, and they werent common at all and do not belong on the list ive constintly had to revert edits by people who incorrectly mistake them, as common as many media outlets make those weapon seem common when in relity they wernt. So if you could Please dnt add anymore to germany as the page is basicly complete right now(unless a new country is added)thank you (Esskater11 17:25, 20 July 2007 (UTC))

Wiki work offer
[edit]I have a number of aircraft (civil and military) ariticles in sndboxes on my userspace I could use some writing help with. Basically, I have texts from several copyrighted sources there, and it all needs to be combined and rewritten. Rewriting's not my strong suit, and I keep procrastinating doing this. You don't have to know much about the topics, just be able to understand what you read, and be able to rewrite it in a readable manner. If it sounds like something you'd be interested in doing, feel free to take a look at my sandbox list, and see if you can help. Thanks, whatever your response! - BillCJ 04:34, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- If that doesn't keep you busy, I wouldn't mind an article being created for the Oasis Battalion and it's Oasis Companies, German DAK units in World War II. Not much info exists on them on the net, and none of the books I've read through have much detail on them (though most order of battles list them) Oberiko 14:22, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
Oasis Battalion
[edit]I don't have much, but here's what I've found thus far:
- 0n 10.04.1941, a batch of Oasen companies were raised using men that had lived, or worked, in Africa. (Tessin lists the numbers 2, 6, 10, 12, 13, the numbers indicating the raising Wehrkreis, and that possibly 13 were raised, numbering 1 – 13.) Also on 10.04.41, the Bataillonstab z.b.V. 300 was raised. It was a small staff consisting of about 10 officers to provide control for the Oasis companies. It was dissolved in 1942.
- The Oasen companies occupied and guarded not only isolated oasis, but also wells, road junctions, etc., and were specially trained and equipped for water collection and treatment operations. Each infantry regiment in North Africa was supposed to have received one company in 1941. Five not so assigned were found directly under the DAK.
- Verbände und Truppen der deutschen Wehrmacht und Waffen-SS im Zweiten Weltkrieg 1939 – 1945 by Georg Tessin. It's a set of 20 volumes listing short descriptions of all Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS forces, battalion sized and higher, created during WWII, using Feldpost numbers. There is errata (see Dr. Niehorter's site), and I believe the set is available at http://www.militaria-biblio.de/
Google book links
- They are referred to as a "Specialist Water Unit"
- The battalion was at one point led by a Captain Enneccerus (Hauptmann is his rank in German)
- They were specifically trained for the southern oases
- Oasis Company 1 was led by Oberleutnant Paulewicz with Oberleutnant Ziemer as his battery commander (At point 208 during Operation Battleaxe) see also
Some common names I've found (both English and German):
- 300th Special Purpose Oasis Battalion
- 300th Oasis Battalion
- 300. Oasis Battalion zbV
- Oasen-Bataillon zbv 300
- S.V 300 Oasen Battalion
- Bataillonstab z.b.V. 300
- Oasis Company
- Oasen-Kompanien
- oasenkompanie
Oberiko 22:01, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
- No worries, thanks for taking the time to look. It's a little known subject - a few specialist formations that only existed for about a year in just one theatre of the war. You'd probably need a very specialized book to find any real information on them. Oberiko 13:25, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Dragon Warrior 3
[edit]I totally think we can get the dw3 article to good status. One of the main problems I had with the Dragon Quest VI article was in-game quotes (because i didnt want to play it again xD). But if you're in the middle of playing it, it would be so useful if you could write down important things the characters say that could be used as references to the story, setting, or characters. Besides that, if you see anything on any websites, etc, that you think is useful, see if you can work it into the article. References are what's going to get the article to good (just look at those final fantasy articles with the 100+ references). Glad to see someone else wants to help the DW articles! ^_^ Evaunit666 01:56, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
- Well like i said before, quotes from the game would be useful. Read the current plot section on the article now. Most of the information is already there, it just needs to be organized and referenced. Was there anything specific you had in mind about the article when you first thought it needed help? Evaunit666 01:55, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- That's not a bad idea, but instead of having a section (which would probably end up turning into a list), just incorporate that info into the other sections. Evaunit666 02:57, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
- The only problem with a list is that lists generally dont belong on wikipedia. whenever you see a list on an article, people always want to turn it into more of a paragraph thing. and seeing as how theres already a list comparing the two versions, a list comparing the other games doesnt really help the article. i strongly believe most of the info is already there, we just have to organize it. Evaunit666 04:26, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
- Hi there! I'm kind of a roaming editor that's latched onto 666's projects because he gives me cookies. I agree with 666 on this one--if you want to include a list of elements that are common among the games, consider putting it on the Dragon Quest main page. There is already a section on there that seems to be in need of organization and development. A list will make it easy for you to organize your thoughts, so that bumping it up into sentences should only take a few minutes. The issue that I have with putting a list like that on this game's page is that, if you do, you're going to need to put a list on every game's page, because it won't look right if only the one game has it. Since there's already a page devoted to the series itself, I really think that a list of common ideas should go on there. If you want to talk about it more with me, just drop me a note on my talk page.--Fuen Fuboo 13:24, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi! You blanked Electron Geometry which was just a redirect to Molecular Geometry. I was wondering why? Thanks
CaptinJohn 14:13, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Just found the note that you put on the requested articles page! What exactly were you after for electron geometry? The reason that I made a redirect was that a quick goggle search returned only molecular geometry results (at least in the first page). I have seen plenty of derivations for the "size" of an electron (its wavelength or the spatial volume containing 99% of its wavefunction etc) but nothing I would call geometry. Perhaps you could elaborate?
Sorry about the misunderstanding
CaptinJohn 14:21, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
So what is it your after?
CaptinJohn 14:35, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes but what is electron Geometry? Electrons dont really have a shape. Is it to do with orbital shapes or something else? Is there a link to somewhere that you can point me to or a specific question that you want me to answer?
Thanks

Wikipedia Users' Alliance
[edit]Please note: this message is being sent out to all involved parties. Dear Friend, the Wikipedia Users’ Alliance has been deleted. I am sure that perhaps you already knew this. I myself just found out. Anyhow during the debate many mean and rude things where said. I am not innocent myself; I too contributed to the unpleasantness. But now Wikipedia Users’ Alliance is dead, gone forever. But we all must move on, for me and my friends, we have to deal with this loss. However it is important that all of us work together to fight vandalism and not argue with one another. There are many things that I want to say, but I know that they would only add to the mean sprit that fills the “air”. As a Buddhist (Risshō Kōsei Kai) I was reading the Holy Dhammapada yesterday. I came across this line, “Holding onto anger is like holding on to a hot coal with the intent to throw it at someone, in the end you are the one who gets burned,” how true! Lets us progress forward. WUA Founder User: King of Nepal has expressed similar views such as these to me via e-mail. His majesty said, “We have to move on, move forward. (Copying my last comment on this matter from the now-closed thread on WP:RD)
- Please read one of Wikipedia's most important essays: WP:Don't be a dick...notably the section "Coping with being labeled a dick". I'll wait while you read that....tum, te-tum, te-tum...oooh - look! A bunny....Oh! You're back. OK, to continue:
- Why does everyone on the RD (secretly or openly) think you are a dick? Well, let's examine the evidence:
- Firstly: Non-distracting signatures are a guideline - which means "It is a generally accepted standard that all editors should follow." and that includes you. It's a guideline because it is understood that in extenuating circumstances, some parts of the guideline may need to be ignored. This is not one of those cases - this is you being a dick. But it's not just the distracting nature of the thing (although it distracts the hell out of me) - there is also a rule that says In consideration of users with vision problems, be sparing with color. If you must use different colors in your signature, please ensure that the result will be readable by people with color blindness. - Yellow on red is just about the worst possible combination for colour-blind users - so you are being exceedingly inconsiderate of those with visual impairment - my son for example will see your sig as a pretty much flat red blob with no text on it - my sister's daughter for another example has to wear purple tinted lense and set the background colour of her monitor to green - red signatures will upset her GREATLY.
- Secondly: nobody - not even a Marine - is going to look at your bloody stupid signature and say "Wow! A tribute to the Marines." - they are all going to say "What a bloody annoying dick" - even after you tell them it's a tribute, they are going to say "Hmmm, this bloody annoying dick has a thing about the Marines". The place for showing off your credentials and support for military service us on your user page - it's the one and ONLY place on Wikipedia where you can do that...feel free to paint the entire thing red and yellow and cover it with Marine logos and anti-colour-blindness hate speech - it's your home, you can do what you like with it. Tagging every talk page you touch with this stuff is simply not acceptable.
- I don't think the Marine credo says anything about it being OK to piss off regular people and inconvenience the handicapped. So if you feel the need to convince people that the Marine corps is a respectable organisation rather than a magnet for arrogant dicks - you really need to follow the guidelines.
- I already explained the Marine thing. Honestly, I don't care what people on wikipedia think about me. If they think I'm a dick, then that is their right. See WP:DGAF--MKnight9989 14:52, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- If you really didn't give a fuck, you couldn't be arsed to inform me that you don't give a fuck. Be cool. I'm the one here who really, truly doesn't give a fuck. I was just having fun flaming. We don't get to do that in Wikipedia very often, but you literally asked for it. No Angry Mastodon, I, but the fact is that your sig is too flashy. I think all that can be said about it has been said. --Milkbreath 15:10, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
- Hehehehe! You didn't actually read WP:DGAF did you! I quote: Using apathy as reasoning for a dickish action is bad! - there ya go. DGAF-ism means saying "I can't be bothered to argue - I'm just going to have a boring sig because I just don't care" - it doesn't mean caring so passionately about your annoying sig that you'll defend it against perfectly reasonable complaints. So not only do you not understand WP:DGAF - but you are actively doing the opposite of what it says! SteveBaker 02:32, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Pellet Gun Shooting
[edit]HOw do I keep from wavering and shaking when holding a pellet gun (or any gun I suppose) in the standing position (no rests or benches)? I plan on enlisting in the USMC after highschool, so this is obviously a serious concern of mine. Is holding a gun something I'll just get used to over time, or am I doing something wrong? --AtTheAbyss (talk) 13:28, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- Without knowing your shooting technique, any diagnosis is quite impossible. Practice is likely to improve this, and bear in mind that the problems can be both physical and mental (concentration, anxiety, things such as that). Perhaps there's a local gun club you could visit to gain insight? Hands-on experience with practiced shooters is likely to do you good. Bear in mind that there's a strong chance that the Corps will require you to abandon previous rifle techniques and learn to shoot "the Marine way", though I think prior experience would be of benefit regardless. — Lomn 14:10, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- To be honest I haven't been shooting long enough to have any technique. I bascially just point the rifle at my target, center it through my scope, and gently squeeze the trigger. --AtTheAbyss (talk) 14:25, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- This is hard to explain without a physical demo. Good technique with the rifle depends on triangles. Assuming you are right handed lock your left elbow into your body to make a strong base support. Pull the butt hard into your shoulder. Grip the rifle with your three fingers and thumb of your right hand and lock everything tight. This takes practice. An instructor would stand in front of you and strike the rifle sideways it should not move. You will have to swivel from the hips but the stance should not change. Unless you are that tight you have little chance of hitting anything. There is a lot more - but when instructing I always start with the sighting. Get that right, then move into shooting from a prone position (lying down) That gets the triangle position in place. Finally be aware that shooting from a standing position is the hardest to get right. As always, practice, practice and more practice. Good luck.86.197.23.15 (talk) 14:44, 22 January 2008 (UTC)DT
