[edit]
There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing.

If you intend to make useful contributions about some topic other than your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block. To do so, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. 331dot (talk) 05:49, 19 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Happy to change my username. I was not intending to use wikipedia for advertising purposes. I only wanted to add a level of detail to an entry that did not discuss the role of identity construction in a video that was entirely about that construction. That said, I understand that linking to an article I wrote could be perceived as a conflict. I would really like my account reinstated so I can make enough changes to add new entries and fix the spelling mistakes I've found in header names.

@331dot: Do you have any comments or objections to an unblock? I haven't looked too deeply but did see the UTRS appeal. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 04:58, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
L235 I'm not clear on if the website (Artfcity) is a news outlet or a place artists approach to have their work written about. If it's the former, I have no objections as this user has agreed to not link to their own work. If it's the latter, I would want this user to better disclose their COI and agree to not directly edit within its area. However, I have no problem with you proceeding as you think best, with my best wishes. 331dot (talk) 10:01, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PALJ1975, do you agree:
  • to disclose your conflict of interest as a writer for your site in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policy; and
  • to refrain from editing directly (you may still submit edit requests) any Wikipedia article for which you have a conflict of interest, broadly construed? That inclues anyone you know and anyone you or your organization have been paid by, as well as closely related people and entities to those people. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 11:33, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@L235: I agree to refrain from editing any Wikipedia entries for which I have a conflict of interest and to disclose any potential conflict.

Art F City is a platform that has taken many forms over the last 15 years. It has operated as a site for critical writing and a news site. Currently, we publish a podcast that looks at the intersection of art and money and are working on a national book project that chronicles defunct artist spaces across the country. (I know all this isn't hugely relevant to the block but since the question was asked, I thought I’d answer it.) Best, Paddy

@L235: :@331dot: I just wanted to check in about this. Is there any way I can get my account unblocked? [[PALJ1975 (talk) 23:59, 27 March 2019 (UTC)]]'[reply]

I'd like to request that the block currently on my account be removed. I will not link to my own writing. It was an error in judgment and violated the terms of Wikipedia, which does not allow advertising. PALJ1975 (talk) 21:30, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I updated the Sondra Perry page with a link to the first critical writing that appeared on her work. It was written by me, on the website I run, Art F City, which is a 501c3 and non-profit registered in the stars of New York. was the first art critic to win a Creative Capital writer’s grant for blogging in 2008. I understand that the link looks like advertising, so I will refrain from linking to my own work in the future, but I did want to explain that the link didn’t come out of nowhere and was not an effort to promote myself. Advocating for unblocking

[edit]

Hi 331dot, and L235, I want to offer some context and clarification here. This user is organizing an Art+Feminism event in two days, so contacted me for advice as one of the lead organizers. I happen to know them IRL, as one does with other people in the Artworld. I am posting on my own decision, not out if any request from them, as I think I can help resolve this, and know that this needs to be resolved ASAP for the event.

First, I can understand your confusion re ArtFCity.com <> User:artfcity and the rule re official names. The tricky thing here is that AFC has both been Paddy Johnson’s solo project, a well known online art blogazine/magazine like Hyperallergic (a WP:RS we link to frequently.) I will also say as someone who interfaces with many new users, the rules about what user names are not allowed (and when one actually is supposed to identify their organizational affiliation) are confusing to new users.

Second, I am a little confused about the claim that a subject area expert citing something they wrote is promotional, per se. Especially given how non-controversial the edit was that PALJ1975 made. Is the concern here that the user’s writing is also on a website they are the editor of? Is the problem that they are directing traffic to a website that they in some way benefit from the traffic? Honest question: how do you see that as different from a museum adding links their their holdings or texts? (Something we encourage)

Lastly, what constitutes a conflict of interest for someone like this, who is a public figure in the artworld, and knows/interacted with thousands (not exaggerating) of people who have Wikipedia pages. Where do you see the line? I ask both as guidance for this user, but also to understand your thinking generally. I want to emphasize that we should WP:AGF here. The edits are constructive. I really do not think Paddy was intending to break rules. I think she is just a new user who has an unusual level of IRL content area expertise and experience. --Theredproject (talk) 00:47, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is interested in what independent reliable sources state, not in what people state about themselves or their own fields. Expert knowledge is helpful to Wikipedia if those experts use independent sources but not their own work. Museums can add links to their own holdings for the purpose of enhancing this project, such as in allowing others to edit articles about their holdings by making sourcing those edits easier- but they can't add promotional materials about themselves, or source their own edits to an article about themselves.
The conflict of interest policy says "Conflict of interest (COI) editing involves contributing to Wikipedia about yourself, family, friends, clients, employers, or your financial and other relationships. Any external relationship can trigger a conflict of interest. When an external role or relationship could reasonably be said to undermine the interests of improving this encyclopedia, the editor has a conflict of interest. That someone has a conflict of interest is a description of a situation, not a judgement about that person's opinions, integrity, or good faith." Merely knowing someone isn't necessarily a conflict of interest, but if you then write about them in your blog or website, it can become one. If Oprah Winfrey was editing about people who appeared on her show and citing her own interviews with them as a source, that would be a COI. 331dot (talk) 07:48, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'm inclined to unblock for now and see what happens. I know the rules can seem overwhelming as a new user, and hopefully we've pointed you to some that you'll now be aware of. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 13:30, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I will happily follow the rules laid out. Is 331dot the only one who can unblock me? PALJ1975 (talk) 13:39, 28 March 2019 (UTC)][reply]
No. There are 851 admins in this project, and anyone thereof has the technical ability to unblock you. Jannik Schwaß (talk) 13:45, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But generally they have to come to consensus first. 331dot do you agree with L235?
Thank you L235, can I respectfully ask you to please unblock then, or to you feel we need to hear from 331dot first? PALJ1975 needs to be able to access the Program and Events Dashboard to be able to sufficiently prepare for the A+F event tomorrow.
I do also note that you haven't really answered my question about COI, other than to copypasta the COI policy. I'm asking, what part of PALJ's edits were "about [their]self, family, friends, clients, employers, or [their] financial and other relationships." Is it the fact that PALJ knows the person, is it the fact that PALJ wrote the WP:RS that is being cited, the fact that PALJ is the ED of the nonprofit which produces said WP:RS, or the combination of the above. I'm asking not out of pedantry, but because we encounter these kinds of entanglements all the time. 331dot I welcome your opinion here as well.--Theredproject (talk) 15:15, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All of that. 331dot (talk) 18:36, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Ellie Ga

[edit]

Hello PALJ1975,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Ellie Ga for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly indicate why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

Tymon.r Do you have any questions? 21:45, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tymon.r,

Thanks for alerting me. I forgot to add that she's included in this year's Whitney Biennial, which is the most important biennial in the country, but she is linked from the Biennial artist page. If I could have a bit more time to flesh out the page, I'd appreciate it. I contested the deletion but just wanted to let you know here, too, what the rationale is for including her in the encyclopedia.
