Opportunity to comment on Batavia

There is a discussion starting up at Talk:Batavia (disambiguation), that may be of interest to you. The subject is technically a page move discussion, but the purpose of the discussion is to decide where Batavia should redirect. Until earlier today, Batavia redirected to History of Jakarta, but during this discussion, it is redirecting to Batavia (disambiguation). Your comments and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for your help. HuskyHuskie (talk) 22:41, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

You are receiving this because you are one of the principal editors of one of the articles that is linked to Batavia (disambiguation). This notice is being posted to all of the top three editors of each of these articles (in terms of total edits), with the following exceptions:

  • editors who are blocked
  • anonymous IP editors
  • editors who, despite ranking in the top three of edits to an article, have only a single edit to said article

Wow!

I still don't get what exactlly was that you did on List of campaigns of Suleiman the Magnificent regarding the "Sorting function", but I thank you very much. When I made that table's columns in the first place, I was looking in one existing FL for help. Obviously I have made some errors in the process. Anyway, I really appreciate your help! Maps and Graphic Design

Are you any good at maps / graphic design? I have a map from Tempo that could be recreated from free images, but I don't have the knowledge of Jakarta necessary to do it. Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:34, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

I was thinking of using File:Location map Jakarta.png as the base image with File:Red Point.gif (with a hue change) to indicate the locations of different riots. The original map could be sent via email, maybe. Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:38, 8 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for helping Redyka, Arsonal. (And me too, I hadn't even thought about that; now I have a source for the Jakarta 2039 blurb from Gadjah Mada University) Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:20, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Do you think this is public domain in Indonesia? It says it is published on a .go.id domain. Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:40, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Without seeing the metadata page for that file, I can't be sure. The Presidential Documents website is more a clipping of different photographs, some government produced, some from books and news articles. Depending on the attribution, it may or may not be copyrighted. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)18:41, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
Additionally, the file you uploaded of Agus Salim does not fall under {{PD-IDGov}} because the copyright is explicitly written on the website (see provision number 2 in that article). It should, however, fall under {{PD-ID}} because Agus Salim died in 1954, so his photographs are more than 50 years old. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)18:45, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
I was just about to ask you that. My interpretation of Article 14 is that the copyright has to be stated on the work and not where it is hosted (i.e. the website design is copyrighted but the picture is not); however, Template:PD-ID is more definite (and more definitely correct), so I'll change that. Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:32, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
The notice applies to the entire website. I've had my run-ins with the Commons copyright police. ;) If you ever scan government-attributed photos from books in the future, check to make sure there's no copyright notice in the parent work as well. If there isn't, I usually note my uploads as "government publication without copyright notice". —Arsonal (talk + contribs)05:12, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
I've had mine too, but I was mainly pointing out copyright violations two pictures of Cinta Laura in two days... ugh Is there a template for government publications without copyright notice? Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:16, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
Not that I know of. I just write it out in the Permissions field, such as in File:Jakarta riot 14 May 1998.jpg. Unfortunately a lot of files uploaded under claims of Indonesian government public domain are faced with the burden of proof. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)05:25, 11 June 2011 (UTC)
Coupled with the use of {{PD-IDGov}}. I see. Thanks! Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:31, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Freedom of Panorama in Indonesia

Would you happen to know what the law on freedom of panorama in Indonesia is? Commons has no information about it. Thanks! Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:50, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Uncertain. Article 23 of the 2002 copyright law has something similar to a freedom of panorama:

Unless agreed otherwise between the Copyright Holder and the Owner of a creative work in the form of a photograph, painting, drawing, architecture, sculpture and/or other artworks, the owner shall be entitled to without the consent of the Copyright Holder to display the work in a public exhibition or to reproduce it in a catalogue, without detracting from the provisions of Article 19 and Article 20 if said work of art is in the form of a portrait.

The copyright holder would be the work's original creator. The owner is the person who is reproducing the work using the forms mentioned above (I think). Articles 19 and 20 deal with personality rights if you take portraits of persons. You'd have to take this section up with the folks at the Commons if you want a definite answer on whether or not freedom of panorama can be derived from this. (I think it can.) Is there a subject you have in mind that you were looking to apply this freedom to? —Arsonal (talk + contribs)10:40, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Can't upload the pictures just yet (still in Lampung) but I have pictures of the East Lampung regent's office, the government-owned Islamic Center in Sukadana, the Metro mayor's office, the fountain in Metro town square, and Al-Taqwa mosque in Metro. I will be expanding the Metro, Indonesia article after I return to Yogyakarta, so I wanted to check to see if FoP applied or not. Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:42, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
You should be fine. I've not seen any architectural photos of Indonesia being taken down because of a FoP violation. To be honest, not many people understand Indonesian copyright law, so if it's not a blatant violation, it gets left alone. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)02:34, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Including Indonesians themselves. I've been rather busy, and I will have a good 2 or 3 hours of uploading pictures (to Commons, FB, and Flickr) when I get back to Jogja. Thanks for the help! Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:17, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

hallo i just want to share my opinion about "Example Chinese loanwords for food" i think word bihun the best translation to English is rice noodles. if we said chinese vermicelli is always or often describe rice noodles Cellophane noodles are known as soun or suun in indonesia or tanghuun in malaysia and basically bihun made from rice... cellophane noodles from mung bean. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Poseng2002 (talkcontribs) 15:28, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for catching those typos at Bendera Pusaka. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:17, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Bendera Pusaka

CHH and Chines Indonesians article

Malari

I am working on an article for the Malari incident (currently at User:Crisco 1492/Malari incident) and I was wondering if you have any free pictures (perhaps in the Habibie book, but I doubt it). Thanks. Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:47, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

The Habibie book only covers the period of his vice presidency, despite its shortness, and some moments of his life and career. A free picture of the Malari incident would be next to impossible to obtain unless you can get an OTRS permission on one of the press photos. On the draft itself, I think you're going too far back on the background. The first and second paragraphs pose little relevance to Malari's cause. Pages 1024–1028 of Benny Setiono's Tionghoa Dalam Pusaran Politik will give you a more detailed account of the incident, whose main roots go back to 1973 if you read the end of the previous chapter. I plan on buying this book before I leave Jakarta. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)19:45, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Just worried that the general context will be lost on most readers; I wanted to be thorough. Thanks for the input, I'll try and merge the two paragraphs (1 & 2). As for the book, it may be hard to find. The Gramedias in Jogja don't even have it in their computer systems anymore. Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:05, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Any guesses as to the copyright status of this? Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:20, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Most likely copyrighted, even if it's a government website. You should note that commons:Template:PD-IDGov does not apply to regional governments, whether it be provincial or village (kelurahan). Even if it did apply, the website has a copyright notice. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)03:20, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
I see. Yes, better to be safe than sorry. The Indonesian article uses a fair-use image, so I guess we should use one too. Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:57, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Still up for collaboration?

I was wondering if you wanted to work together on another project. Right now I have User:Crisco 1492/Violence against Chinese Indonesians going, and it promises to be a pretty long haul. I have prepared a rough outline of what I'm planning to do, but any input from you would be greatly appreciated. (Right now I'm doing some easy stuff first, but I plan starting the sections on the stuff we don't have later) Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:34, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

I've contemplated making such an article in the past, but I feel greater result will come from a hypothetical article on Discrimination against Chinese Indonesians. This will combine your proposed article (which I think should be a list instead rather than a full blown article if it were a standalone) and the current poorly-managed Legislation on Chinese Indonesians. "Violence against Chinese Indonesians" would only point to specific major violent incidents, which won't provide a complete narrative tying all the incidents together. Your current writing would be better suited for this hypothetical article.
If I were to play the devil's advocate, however, such an article would unbalance the narrative of the history of Chinese Indonesians toward a negative one because there are few narratives of positive Chinese Indonesian experiences in the literature. That was a challenge I had to tackle while rewriting the main article, which is why the three primary violent incidents of 1740, 1965–1966, and 1998 are only mentioned sparingly. I felt that discussions of those incidents must be left to their own articles. Their causes and effects are very complicated and would be difficult for a reader to digest if they were further thrown together with the more minor incidents. If possible, I don't want to detract from these individual articles because many of them still require significant attention and should be worked at individually before we start tying everything together. This concrete hierarchy would be in line with Wikipedia's policy on summary style writing where more specific articles present greater details.
Arsonal (talk + contribs)13:09, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
Indeed. A discrimination against Chinese Indonesians article would do well too, but I'm worried it would end up too long. Even if we were just to write sparingly on the minor incidents, such as the 1946 Tangerang killings, the violence alone could be over 20kb I think. I will move the current draft to User:Crisco 1492/Discrimination against Chinese Indonesians and try to work on the violence angle first. Please feel free to add a bit more about discrimination (including the legislation) as you wish. I have a paper I wrote when I still planned on doing my thesis on the status of Chinese Indonesians that might offer a guideline, but I wince now when I read the Indonesian I used. Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:18, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
That's fine by me. Considering that I've put some thought into the process of writing articles on Chinese Indonesians, I will probably transform my Chinese Indonesian sandbox to a suggested guidelines page. This will save us from the need to dig up old discussions in the future. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)13:34, 17 July 2011 (UTC)
Good idea. It is a much-written about topic, so there may be quite a few to write. Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:41, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Request for opinion

Hi Arsonal, my article regarding discrimination against Chinese Indonesians is about 70% complete. Could you take a look at it and let me know what you think> (Aside from the lead, which will be expanded last). Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:04, 24 July 2011 (UTC)

It's too choppy, in my opinion, especially since you took some text from articles of varying quality as well. There are multiple Manual of Style issues that need to be addressed, such as proper introduction of abbreviations and terminology. The brevity of cohesive analysis presents a NPOV issue because the facts themselves are sometimes blurry, so they can't be written out as information to be accepted immediately. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)15:26, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Alright, thanks. I'll try and work on it some more. I just moved and am currently stuck using web cafes, so I haven't had a chance to use online sources. Any other kinds of analysis for inclusion? Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:28, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
I'll give it another run sometime later. But first, I think you should fully develop the 1740 Batavia massacre article first before going any further in the colonial period. It's currently the only poorly written one of the three major violent incidents against ethnic Chinese. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)20:52, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Once I get a modem, I will get on that. I may not be able to get it to GA standards, but hopefully it can be expanded to at least a B. Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:36, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

Chinese Indonesians and May 1998 Riots

Have you considered nominating either Chinese Indonesians or May 1998 riots of Indonesia for FA? Would be nice to have it featured on the main page next May (or May 2013 for the riots). Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:01, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

It's on my work queue. I've been distracted by a side project that is now in FLC and another that I recently created. "Chinese Indonesians" is first in line for FAC once I finish reworking the Language and Literature sections. "May 1998" will probably be next. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)06:05, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Alright. For the Language and Literature section, Leo Suryadinata's "The Culture of the Chinese Minority in Indonesia" has a section (19 pages in my copy) devoted to Peranakan Literature. I may make a graph based on the population data in it later. Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:17, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Unfortunately, that source is inaccessible through Google Books. Would you be able to scan me a copy of the section? I already have a population pyramid diagram in the article. Do you think that is insufficient? —Arsonal (talk + contribs)06:21, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
The information I have is historical. I took another look and it appears that there is also 20 pages of info on the press; I'll have to see how much scanning would cost. Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:25, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Historical data might be more suited for Demographics of Indonesia or Ethnic groups in Indonesia. I'd rather limit the number of media on the main article to prevent bloating; it was difficult enough to choose the current selection from the hundreds of images available from the Tropenmuseum donation. If scanning will cost you money, you could take digital pictures of the pages and e-mail the photos instead. I do it all the time for my own records. :PArsonal (talk + contribs)06:31, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
I'll try and get decent quality images that aren't too big, but they'd probably be uploaded to Scribd. How's the graph? Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:05, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
You'll need to re-upload the chart as a PNG. JPG charts don't compress very well as you can see from its usage because it's both text and graphical. See if you can make it look more attractive, like I did at File:Chinese Indonesian population pyramid 2000.png. MoS would also dictate the hyphen be substituted with an en dash. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)07:21, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Better? Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:40, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

You need to download Inkscape, its an svg program, it would make very short work of that graph and it is completely scaleable.
I just used it to make this File:Belitung ship routes.svg Chaosdruid (talk) 05:40, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Unfortunately I don't know how to use Inkscape very well, let alone play with SVG properly, and my graphic-making abilities are now limited since I no longer have Photoshop. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)05:45, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

Notable, but no sources

Isn't a pain when there is someone you know is notable, but you can't find many sources on him? My page on Leo Suryadinata is already 2200 chars, but without more than one source I'm kind of iffy about placing it in main space and trying for DYK. Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:53, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, that's why I held off on his article. He definitely meets the notability guidelines for academics though. It wouldn't hurt to list some of his monumental works as a bibliography, just as I did for George McTurnan Kahin. Creating articles for Indonesianists is always difficult, and we still have many that are missing. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)17:17, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi Arsonal, I was wondering if you could give me some feedback regarding the current status of Christine Hakim; do you think it could be brought to GA? (I've replied at the FA nomination too) Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:15, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

This isn't a comprehensive review, but per WP:WIAGA, it seems to meet the all the criteria with the exception of #1. I understand your writing style tends to use shorter paragraphs (and there's really nothing wrong with that), but in this case it seems as if you're jumping from one credited work to another too quickly without developing some sort of continuity. Don't be afraid to combine chunks that appear to provide a similar theme during a major leg of Hakim's career. This will also prevent the repetition of similar sentence structure (see the beginning of the last five paragraphs in the biography section). There are also a number of instances in overlinking where the linked subject is too general to provide relevance to her article. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)21:26, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Alright, thanks a lot. I'll try revisiting it to make it a little "spicier". I've hatted the addressed comments at the FAN. Good luck! Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:42, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Wishing you are still in Indonesia

Pitty you are not in Australia, we might need some "help" next year in Bali *grin* Siska.Doviana (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.166.33.207 (talk) 14:41, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Hey

It seems that you've been a major contributor to the article of Chinese Indonesians.
I'm just a little bit curious, 你是唐人嗎?哈哈哈哈。。Calvin Marquess (talk) 03:08, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

對, 我是印尼來的唐人. 可是我的中文不太好. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)03:14, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

哦。。你有沒有證據?
對不起啊。。因為我認為你是印尼的原住民。Calvin Marquess (talk) 03:27, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Not to sound defensive, but even if I were, would there be an issue? I think we can assume good faith here per the privacy policy. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)03:39, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Okay. Calvin Marquess (talk) 03:42, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Anyways, you've done a very great job in developing that Chinese Indonesian article. Keep it up man! Calvin Marquess (talk) 03:53, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. It did take a year and a half after all. >.>Arsonal (talk + contribs)03:56, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Hey, I am in Professor Johnson's politics of developing nations class and just saying hi. Hope to work with you soon! Kkhari29 (talk) 00:08, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

head start

Yes, please do! I was going to close your app and officially admit you, but Ed17 said he would do it (to set the precedent for that process to be totally volunteer-run). Sorry for the long delay with the app, by the way. Cheers--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 19:30, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Another chart

Hopefully you find this useful. I'm using it in my rewrite of Arab Indonesian.

It looks kind of busy as a thumbnail. I usually see religious distribution displayed using {{Bar box}}. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)22:27, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried using barbox for Arab Indonesians only, but since the 5 religions besides Islam are all less than 1%, it was somewhat less useful. Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:17, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, that's what I figured. Although this chart has just about the same effect. You can't even see anything but a blue bar in a thumbnail... —Arsonal (talk + contribs)23:24, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
At 250px it looks a little better, methinks. Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:42, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Do you think your upload of the proclamation would be a good candidate for Featured Sound? Seems to be of a higher quality than most on the web. Encyclopedic value is through the roof, too. Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:18, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

I'm hesitant. Some time after uploading the file, I re-read Article 29 of the copyright law, which stipulates that "sermons, lecturers, addresses and other works of utterance" are copyrighted for 50 years after the author's death. Sukarno died in 1970, so it may not be out of copyright until 2021. Moreover, if one were to consider the recording a government broadcast over the radio, Article 18 stipulates that the broadcaster is legally capable of requesting compensation. There is also an allegation floating around that the recording was not made in 1945, despite no mention of this in any modern literature. It's allegedly a recording made some time in the 1950s because it does not reflect the fiery oration that is usually attributed to Sukarno during the revolutionary period. —Arsonal (talk + contribs)18:39, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Darn. Shame about the images at FA too... Confusing Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:10, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Welcome to the Wikipedia Ambassador Program

Hi Arsonal!

Congratulations! Your application to join the Wikipedia Ambassador Program as an Online Ambassador has been accepted.

First off, I apologize for the following info-dump. If you're wondering how to get started or are wondering what's going on, please contact me.

If you haven't already done so, take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines: Wikipedia:Online_Ambassadors/Guidelines

The "mentorship process" section lays out approximately what will be expected of you as a mentor. If you'd like, you can also volunteer to be the coordinating online ambassador for a class or two.

Please add yourself to the top of the list of available mentors, and note the number of students you think you'd like to mentor next term (it doesn't have to be a final answer, this is just to help with matching students and mentors once the students start getting active) and if you'd like to take on the coordination role for any classes note that as well: Wikipedia:Online_Ambassadors/Mentors (Don't add yourself to the lower "Additional online ambassadors section; that's for ambassadors-in-training and ambassadors who are already mentoring all the students they want to take on.)

To coordinate between Online Ambassadors and Campus Ambassadors, we've been using a Google Group as a mailing list. It's not required, but almost all the ambassadors are on it. Would you like Sage to subscribe you? Email him with your email address if so.

You can also check out the first two ambassador newsletters, which have more detail about what's going on right now. You'll get future editions delivered to your talk page.

If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors and #wikipedia-en-classroom to your channel lineup.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 00:12, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

P.S. My apologies for how long this took. I think this was more a consequence of summer and no school than lack of activity in the program. :-) Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 00:12, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Help on ruling

I believe the admin "Kuru" is made a very serious mistake here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Edit_warring#User:LardoBalsamico_reported_by_User:Sillystuff84_.28Result:_page_protected.29 I've been trying to engage on his talk page. He has all but admitted his mistake here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Kuru#3RR_or_4RR.3F Sillystuff84 (talk) 15:15, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi, do you plan on splitting the list at some point? If not, I would not mind doing it, though it will won't be high quality. DragonZero (Talk · Contribs) 04:58, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
