Latest news from the Wikimedia Collaboration team, about Notifications, Flow and Edit Review Improvements. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you.
What's new?
- “New Filters for Edit Review” beta released: As of May 9, the New Filters for Edit Review beta has been released to all wikis. The beta lets users review edits on Recent Changes using an easier and more powerful interface and many new tools, including user-defined highlighting and, on some wikis, predictive filters powered by ORES, a machine-learning program. You must opt in to the beta to try it out.
- More features coming soon: The New Filters are still very much in development. In addition to fixing bugs and making adjustments (here’s our current to-do list), we’re actively adding new features, many at users’ request. A few notable additions you can look for this month: A cool tool for saving filter settings; a “Watchlisted pages” filter; a “Flagged Revisions” filter (for some wikis only); a “Last revision” filter.
- Tell us your ideas—but don’t wait: The team is focused right now in making changes to the New Filters beta. But in a few months, we’ll be moving on to other projects. So now is the time to give the new tools a try and then tell us what you think. What works well? What could make things better for you?
- In the medium-term: By the end of summer, we plan to complete a suite of improvements that will, among other things: incorporate all the remaining Recent Changes tools into the new filtering interface; create new ways for reviewers to move back and forth through the filter queue; implement a “Reverted” filter; and, finally, bring the New Filters UI and tools to Watchlist.
- Have time for a talk? We're looking for people we can interview about their experiences with the new beta. If you’re a regular user of Recent Changes and have tried the new features—and if you can spare an hour to chat in English with our design researcher—please email dchenwikimedia.org with the subject line “user interview.” Let us know how to get in touch with you and what time zone (city, country...) you’re in.
- Wish you had ORES on your wiki? Some of the more interesting New Filters for Edit Review features are dependent on the machine-learning service ORES, which is available only on a small but growing list of wikis. For ORES to work on a wiki, volunteers from that wiki must train it by scoring some thousands of sample edits. Here’s a link that explains how the process works and how you can get it started on your wiki.
Edit Review Improvements [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- Many Recent Changes pages have on top a list of links. We plan to integrate those links in a collapsible menu. You are invited to comment the 3 proposals we have drafted on Phabricator.
- On wikis where Flagged Revisions are used, an edit highlighted as bad by ORES will not be highlighted anymore when the edit is reviewed by someone. [1]
- You can highlight pages that are in your Watchlist in Recent Changes. 3 different filters are available: in watchlist, not in watchlist, new changes in watchlist. [2]
- Wikidata, Dutch, Czech, Hebrew, Estonian and Finnish Wikipedia now have the new filters available as a Beta feature, and ORES is enabled by default on those wikis. [3]
- All wikis now have the Recent changes Filters as a Beta feature. [4]
- Users are invited to opt in to the Recent changes Filters beta when they visit the Recent Changes page. [5]
- On wikis that have ORES predictions enabled by default, it is now possible to choose how to display the predictions in watchlist and recent changes pages. [6]
Future changes
- It will be possible soon to save and retreive your favorite filters combinations. [7]
- We are working on adding filter groups for last revisions, edits from Wikidata and reverted edits. [8][9][10]
Notifications [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- When an article you have created is linked to a Wikidata item, you can receive a notification. Wikidata and all the Wikivoyages have it since May 9th, other wikis will follow. [11]
- Special:Notifications tabs is now set to "Unread" if there are any unread messages. [12]
Flow [More information • Help pages]
Recent changes
- You can enable Flow as a Beta feature on your talk page on Arabic Wikipedia and Catalan Wikiquote. [13][14]
- When you send more than 50 mentions on one Flow post, you are now warned you have hit the limit. [15]

The Wikimedia movement strategy core team and working groups have completed reviewing the more than 1800 thematic statements we received from the first discussion. They have identified 5 themes that were consistent across all the conversations - each with their own set of sub-themes. These are not the final themes, just an initial working draft of the core concepts.
You are invited to join the online and offline discussions taking place on these 5 themes. This round of discussions will take place between now and June 12th. You can discuss as many as you like; we ask you to participate in the ones that are most (or least) important to you.
Here are the five themes, each has a page on Meta-Wiki with more information about the theme and how to participate in that theme's discussion:
- Healthy, Inclusive Communities
- The Augmented Age
- A Truly Global Movement
- The Most Respected Source of Knowledge
- Engaging in the Knowledge Ecosystem
On the movement strategy portal on Meta-Wiki, you can find more information about each of these themes, their discussions, and how to participate.

Hi
Apology for the rather nebulous message at the sydney meetup page - thanks for clarifying things - hope to meetup - ! JarrahTree 23:40, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for coming to the Sydney meetup - I am sorry I did not get to the end of the conversation that we started

- I don't have much more to say. My message was: The WMF needs to broaden it's global footprint to counter the perception it is 'American' cultural imperialism. I think it should do this by having a greater percentage of employees outside the USA and establishing data centers outside the USA. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 20:40, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Rebecca Renner
Hello Ariconte. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Rebecca Renner, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: publishing essays in multiple notable magazines and newspapers indicates significance. Thank you. SoWhy 09:34, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
Fiddling with Alfred Brian Palmer
@Ariconte: I hope you will forgive my edits of Alfred. I was hoping you might flesh some of this out a bit (for example, an explanation of the Spud Run). I had a minor go at what the Maria Giovanni was all about, but I reckon a bit more back story would be great. Good to meet you. Regards, MargaretRDonald (talk) 06:33, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
flicking the refs out of the text

Thanks for encouraging it. I'm feeling discouraged. After calling me a spammer and telling me to fuck off, the user has now made a further personal attack. I have found no good ideas on how to get along that I'm not already trying and can't get any helpful guidance on where I'm going wrong. Guidance re. NRMA VS NRMA INSURANCE
Hi Ariconte,
Hope all well.
Thanks for your help with my issue. I will change my user name but you mentioned I will still need a solid argument for getting a NRMA Insurance section up and running.
Why is that the case? NRMA Insurance is a stand along company so shouldn't it have its own page? Other IAG brands like Coles, SGIO, SGIC and CGU have their own pages.
Cheers and thanks again

- Please sign your posts with 4 tildes '~~~~'.
- Going from the comments of the blocking editor; I would say the articles were promotional. I would suggest creating an article in your sandbox and then asking the blocking editor to look at it - and comment on it's acceptability.
- Also read WP:YFA.

Helping Alvanhholmes
Hi, Ariconte. It looks like we're both trying to help Alvanhholmes. I'll defer to you. I left them a message on their talk page offering to fix some "low-hanging-fruit." You can see our short conversation here. 🙅🙅🙅ShAsHi SuShIlA mUrRaY😣😣😣 00:55, 5 November 2018 (UTC) You asked me Why I was making all of those broken links. I did not think that they were broken. I thought that they were good. At least they looked good, but when I looked at the References after you advised me I see that they weren't.
I honestly don't understand why or how they were broken. I thought that they were good links. I've been trying to understand by reading the help pages, but I guess I just can't get it. Bear with me please I am 79, had a craniotomy a year ago to remove a brain tumor and am in treatment for lung cancer. I'm doing the best I can. I can't even handle a cell phone. I have an old flip phone for emergencies but even have trouble with that.
My techique, such as it is, is to find a formula that works then copy and paste releveant information as regards author book url I really did think that I was doing good.
Here is the template Icreated to us. I thought if it worked for someone else, then it would work for me. Evidently not.
<ref name="Brown MDCCCCI "{{Cite book | last=Brown | first=Alexander| title=Journals of the House of Burgesses 1619-1658-59| publication-date=MCMXV | publisher=Richmond Virginia| url=https://books.google.com/books?id=vkwSAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA268&lpg=PA268&dq=English+politics+in+early+virginia+history&source=bl&ots=uY-XS1rYuZ&sig=Flog6FZw74fL8JTlMIXAXyTuxG4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwicrfCMn8veAhXVHjQIHcieCl8Q6AEwEXoECAQQAQ#v=onepage&q=English%20politics%20in%20early%20virginia%20history&f=false%7C accessdate=10 November 2018 }}</ref>
All those citations in red are good citations, they represent actual references. But now I don't even know how to correct them, all I see is uneditable red.

Msg from Alvan
Hi again Ariconte. Wow am I confused. I thought that I left you some messages on your talk page, but they seem to have disappeared.
Thanks for the link to the old William Farrar page. Not much on it, not as I remember seeing it. There is a definite lack of verbage.
I noticed one major error in it, apparently the original author was perpetuating the discredited idea that he was the son of Nicholas Ferrar, a major stockholder and President of the Virginia company. In reality he was a lst cousin once removed. The references and citations leave a lot to be desired as well. I hope that I have done much better.

- I think you sent me emails - which don't appear here. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 05:25, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
I have been trying to correct the footnote errors, but this one suddenly appeared where it was previously OK I literally don't understand it, thus can;t I have no idea what it means footnote 3. Cite error: The named reference Jamestowne was invoked but never defined (see the help page).
Also these talk pages are confusing for me. I left you a message above, before he Barnstar, I couldn't find but this is the second message today. Can you help

Lost here msg from Alvan
Thank you for your advice. I honestly don't know what I did to create the user page. Or maybe I didn't do anything. I was trying to create a 2nd sandbox so I could post and edit another article, but it showed up, blank and I think there was stuff on it before, don't know where it went.
I want to change the title to of the redict from William Farrar (settler) to Councillor William Farrar but don't know how to change the title, also afraid if I change the Title it will no longer be in the cue for approval for posting.
Is it possible to have more than one sandbox at a time? If so how do I create a second sandbox? How do I change the title of the redirect page?
If I change the title will it still be in the que for approval?
Lost here Alvanhholmes (talk) 02:20, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
- Your user page was created when you registered your account - initially it was blank.
- Your draft of the article (in your sandbox) was moved to article space with the page name William Farrar (settler). It could be moved to another name but you should read WP:NCP and WP:NCPDAB. See Help:How to move a page for instructions.
- You can have as many sandboxes as you want..... just go to your user page and in the web address bar add '/sandbox2' and hit return and follow the instructions that appear.
- Your William Farrar article is in article space ---- ie; it has been 'approved'.

New msg from Alvan
Ariconte:
I wish to thank you so much for your kind consideration, patience and help that you have show me. I would,l if I could, buy you a dinner at the place of your choosing.
I have just finished a very short article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beggars_Bush_(Colony_of_Virginia). It shows up as a wikipage, I can't believe it was approved that fast, but when I searched for Beggars Bush it doesn't show up in the disambiguation page.. Any idea what is going on.
Strangely, I can not edit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beggars%27_Bush; It has a strange%27
Meanwhile Farrar's Island is sitting Draft
And following your instructions I created a second sand box2 here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Alvanhholmes/sandbox2&action=edit
I wanted to copy and past the source from the Alvanhholmes page to the Sandbox2 page so I could send it for publishing review, but I can't even edit it.
Again thanks for all of your help Alvanhholmes (talk) 04:54, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Apologies for the last two sentences. Evidently I got confused, and looked for the Edit source link in the wrong place
But I do have another question: Here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beggars_Bush_(Colony_of_Virginia) How did the Article Name (large and bold) Beggars Bush (Colony of Virginia) get there, who put it in, how do they do that?
It appears as if Beggars Bush (Colony of Virginia) is a full fledged Wikipedia page, but it doesn't show up in the disambiguation pages. Should it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alvanhholmes (talk • contribs) 05:04, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
- You created it and another user moved it!!!!!!
- Take the time to read some of the pages I have suggested!
- Regards, Ariconte (talk) 05:10, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
- Don't touch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beggars%27_Bush ...... it is an article about a play.
- And please; when you start a new topic in a talk page..... Either use the New section button at the top of the page or put in a section head your self with the code ==Heading name==.
- Regards, Ariconte (talk) 05:24, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
First question
Hi Ariconte:
The reason I created the Article Beggars Bush is because when I initially used an external link in the article on William Farrar (settler), someone embedded a link to Beggars Bush barracks in Ireland.
As I stated in the article Beggars Bush is not a place, but it is the original name of Jordans Journey, Which is sthe original name of an article named Jordan Point, Virginia, and as such the article is historically informational. I do not think that all wiki articles are about notables, are they? ```` — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alvanhholmes (talk • contribs) 09:44, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
- Everything in Wikipedia is supposed to be Notable: See Wikipedia:Notability. If it does not meet those tests; there is a danger that it may be deleted or merged into other articles.
- Regards, Ariconte (talk) 19:03, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
Second question,
And I recall you mentioning that you are going on vacation so I will ask it at the Teahouse as well.
I have two articles in Draft: I assume that they will sit there forever until someone approves them for publication review, am I correct?
One of them I submitted for publishing, but it winds up in Draft and I was not notified.
What do I have to do to get the following articles into being reviewed for publication?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Farrar's_Island
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Beggars_Bush_(Colony_of_Virginia)Alvanhholmes (talk) 10:10, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
- I have added a header to the Beggars Bush article ... it includes a submit button. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 19:13, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

3rd Question
Me again. I am finally getting the hang of it, almost. I have a situation that baffles me and I hope you can help or direct me to someone who can. My son, who is way smarter than I, has reviewed William Farrar (settler) and has offered some suggestions to clean it up. I took his advice, but when I did There appeared a paragraph under heading Marriage to Cecily Jordan that is grey. I have tried everything to get rid of the grey. There does not seem to be any hair coloring that I know of to do it. I have deleted it, copied and pasted it again from MS Word and it is still gray can you tell me what to do or what I did wrong, ThanksAlvanhholmes (talk) 01:21, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
- I see it has been fixed. It will ofter be faster to ask at the teahouse - I was away doing volunteer work.....
- I think the problem was caused by a space in front of the first word in the paragraph ' William' instead of 'William'.
- Generally working in word and pasting is likely to generate all kinds of random problems. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 04:23, 20 November 2018 (UTC)
A slight request for help
I have completely redone https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:John_Ferrar_(Deputy_Treasurer,_Virginia_Company) if for nothing else, practice. However my last references have Empty title (actually they are the same book, and I don't know how to make a shorthand reference. My problem is that I stared at the syntax till my eyes hurt, I checked on the help page for empty title, and I cannot see what I did wrong or what is needed. Now I have someone serialnumber 54129 to answer and apologize to. I checked the history, saw the edit, thank you very much, I copied into wordpad and will print and study. I thought I saw my error, but when I tried to correct it. I only compounded the error so I had to copy and past your example, and change the page reference. I don't like doing that because I don't learn. Again thank you very muchOldperson (talk) 22:19, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for fixing the type. I assume that it was in the reference. I was trying to correct it, took my hours trying to figure out what was wrong (still not sure) I use a wordpad document to collect templates on, and then use my sandbox2 to experiment. Between my brain and my eyesight, anyway thanks I really appreciate itOldperson (talk) 23:12, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Red User Names
How does one get a user named that does not exists. Reading the Teahouse page I see a plethora of usernames asking questions, but their user names are in red and when you click on them, you discover that user does not exist. Autobiographical ...
I was just notified by you that an article I wrote was autobiographical. It is not. I am not that person, I am not related, nor have I ever met that person. As a matter of fact, I just wrote another article on an architect who died a month ago. I am not that person, either, although I met him in a Publix bathroom once fifteen years ago. For the article in question, Guy Peterson, I used the already-existing article on living architect Max Strang who has a similar page, as a template. Strang's is without the offensive banners at the top. His article seems to be acceptable, even though it is virtually identical in structure and content to the one I authored. I can tell you, as a subject-matter expert, that both architects are equally worthy of articles, perhaps Peterson more-so, in terms of accomplishment and awards (which explains the slightly more thorough and complete text). Actually, he fits somewhere between Strang and I.M. Pei (and the article's size and context seems to indicate that). Virtually every sentence is supported by appropriate footnoting. Comparing the Strang and Peterson pages (as well as other living architects), it appears that there has been uneven article treatment here. Please be more specific with how one is offensive and the other is not. I am discussing your notations with editors at Teahouse. Thanks. Architecttype (talk) 13:08, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- P.S. I have removed the quotation and the paragraph regarding the contributions of the wife. Has it achieved the superficiality required? Every sentence has been appropriately footnoted, fyi. Architecttype (talk) 14:07, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- Regarding the tags I placed (autobio and COI); you stated the images were your "Own work". I assumed, possibly incorrectly, you were the architect. I am not involved in any of the other details you mention. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 19:38, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Please list the BLP issues you believe exist in my draft on the Berkhamsted child rape network
Hi Ariconte,
You claimed that a draft page on the detestable Berkhamsted child rape network had "Many BLP issues". What BLP issues do you think it has? Many editors have checked the article and you're the first to make such a claim. Please list what you consider to be "BLP issues". Tots & little ones matter! (talk) 01:31, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- My phrase was "Many BLP issues I think". I was uncomfortable with the reliance on police reports (primary sources). I looked at WP:CRIME and WP:1E while thinking about it. YMMV, Ariconte (talk) 03:09, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Ariconte, thank you for spotting the sole reliance on a police report for one of the offenders. I have modified my draft to include news reports for his two prison sentences and associated convictions. Tots & little ones matter! (talk) 01:40, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

- In answer to your question: Clicking on a category link will take you to the category listing, which may be what you want. A google search for 'military history "Category:" site:wikipedia.org' may also be informative.

Hi Ariconte Thank you for your kind information. I would endeavour to simply right the smaller wrongs, such as mis-information,and links to exterior sources that are trafficking in the same. This subject is personal to me.. and the "subjects" family. I hope that my lack of dispassion will be tempered with acceptable WP Protocol. As a newbie, I pray I will be treated with understanding and sympathy. Best wishes Tony HER KNIGHT (talk) 14:53, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
Status of Article Anna Maria Erdődy
Hello, Ariconte. I noticed that you removed AfC tags from the article Anna Maria Erdődy yesterday. Could you or another reviewer/administrator please enlighten me as to the present status of this article? It is now in mainspace and has had all AfC tags and other templates removed, yet it does not appear in Google searches. Has "Anna Maria Erdődy" been marked as "reviewed"? It also, if the absence of templates in the Talk section is anything to go by, still needs assessing by the Biography and Classical Music portal-people. Any news on this would be welcome. Alphaten (talk) 22:47, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
- I think the editor that moved it to mainspace (User:Oldperson , I think) should have done all the cleanup.... or possibly not done the move. I was just removing something that was no longer applicable. I will go have another look. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 00:04, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- Appreciated, Ariconte. My main concern is that it doesn't become 'orphaned' somehow, and forgotten. Main requirement is to have it passed by a reviewer and assessor, so that it shows up in Web searches. Regards, Alphaten (talk) 00:08, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- Why so focused on "web searches"? If it is in mainspace it will eventually show up in Google searches. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 00:15, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- Oh, in that case sorry - I was under the (mistaken?) impression that it needed to be marked as "reviewed"--by some sort of curation tool for admins--before that could happen. As long as it is on some reviewer-list for articles pending assessment/review, I am quite happy. My concern was that it might not be... Alphaten (talk) 00:19, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- I think you are correct..... It needs to be reviewed. That will happen in due course. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 00:36, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

Please participate to the talk pages consultation
Hello
Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.
We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.
We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.
