Broken Signature
Hey, I noticed your name on Wikipedia talk:How to fix your signature. I was wondering if you could help me out. Do you know what is wrong with this signature: [[User:Arbitrarily0|<font color=#3B444B>'''''Arbitrarily0'''''</font>]] - I get the message "Invalid raw signature; check HTML tags" when I try to put it into my preferences - do you know what's wrong? It should look like: Arbitrarily0 (in grey). Thanks for your help. Arbitrarily0 16:29, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Welcome and note on the chess templates
Hi, Just noticed the article Andrei Kharlov and the stencil you made. Great work on both! A little note though, usually we link to fide and chessgames using the corresponding templates, eg for Andrei Kharlov this is done like this:
{{chessgames player|id=65225}}
{{fide|id=4102185}}
I have updated the article accordingly, perhaps the stencil should be updated too. The fide template came in handy recently, as fide reorganised their website, we only had to update our template, instead of updating 100s of articles! Welcome to the wikiproject chess and happy editing!! Voorlandt (talk) 22:28, 27 August 2008 (UTC)

Upload of photographs
Hi! Thanks for your great work on chess related articles. I think there might be a concern with the photo's you are uploading. Currently, you are tagging them as released under "GNU Free Documentation License"; however on the websites they come from, I cannot read that they are released as such. Wikipedia is normally very strict on those things [1] (ie an admin can come along and remove all your uploads). If you have questions about it, I am perhaps not the best person to talk to, but it would be a good topic to raise at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Chess Best regards, Voorlandt (talk) 21:19, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
- When I upload pictures, i usually take the safe road, ie uploading pictures for which the copyright has expired (lifetime of author +70 years), and when I do so, i upload them to wikimedia commons, so that other wikipedia's can easily use them. To see the list of what I have uploaded recently, see here [2]. A good example is this: [3]. Other pictures I have uploaded are from flickr (as some of them on that website are specifically tagged with the License (cc-by-sa-2.0), for example [4]. One other way is to specifically ask the author of the picture to release it in public domain, as I have done for this one: [5]. Anyway, it is good you start a topic on the wp chess talkpage, as I am not an expert on what is best to do with pictures found on random websites. Best regards Voorlandt (talk) 21:59, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks Voorlandt. αЯβιτЯαЯιŁΨθ (talk) 02:40, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
Hello, Fellow de-orphaner!
I noticed you added your name to the list of participants in WikiProject Orphanage. We really appreciate your help! The first things you could do to get started with us are:
- Read the Wikipedia:WikiProject Orphanage page, especially the section marked "Criteria". The page contains a lot of good advice to get you started, as well as the standard procedures we are using to de-orphan articles.
- Look at {{orphan}},{{do-attempt}}, and {{articleissues}} closely and make sure you know how to use them correctly. (It's not difficult, but it is easy to screw up. Trust me, I have.)
- Keep de-orphaning! Category:Orphaned articles contains all orphaned articles organized by month. Right now we're just trying to keep up with all the new orphans being created, so please start with the current monthly category. Once those are cleared out, we can start working on the backlog in reverse-chronological order.
- Of course, you may have already known all of this, in which case sorry for the spam. Either way, let me know if there's any way I can help you contribute more to the project!--Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:53, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
- By the way, I didn't leave that message. I just substituted it. When I first tried to leave you a talkback note, it wound up dumping me into Template:Welcome de-orphaner! --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:55, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

That looks like it works. Sorry about that, sometimes the newlines work out kinda weird. If you'd like, I've got some more information at User:Hersfold/Adopt/Templates and User:Hersfold/Adopt/AdvancedTemplates. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:42, 1 October 2008 (UTC)
- For some reason the code's not operating like one would expect it to. I have fixed it, and copied the fixed code onto your test template, but it's a bit of an ugly fix. All the #if: statements have to be nested, so you end up with a jillion } things at the end of the code. If you change anything, make sure you get the count right or the template will explode. Sorry about all that. Hersfold (t/a/c) 02:17, 2 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well done to you as well! That looks like a well-planned template. Good work on that, and thanks for the star! Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:50, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I found the problem, and know how to fix it, but you're not going to like it much. I tried to stick the template into my sandbox, and then subst: the code to see what was going on, and instead of getting fewer error messages, I got a lot more - see. Fortunately, it tells me what went wrong. You've written a template that's so big, it hits the template limit. Template limits are one of the cases where WP:PERFORMANCE can be seen in action. Making a massive page, or one with a lot of templates, is a potential way to break the wiki, but the developers have thought of it and set up these limits to prevent it from doing just that. Unfortunately, in the process, they occasionally break templates which can cause pages to explode as you've seen. Each page is limited to about 2 MB of content. When a template is transcluded, it doesn't take up a lot of space itself, and only shows a few bytes' difference in the page history. However, when the page is displayed, that template is expanded into what it actually is. So, the edit box won't have a lot of stuff in it, but the page itself can be huge. To prevent them from getting too huge, any template that will put the page over the set limits will not be expanded in this manner. Your template apparently does that around parameter 38, and so is regrettably useless beyond that point. On very large pages, it's very likely the problem would occur sooner.
- I did a little work earlier trying to make the template more efficient, and will do so again in a moment, but we can only do so much, unfortunately. It'll probably have to be cut down to a maximum of 30 parameters to be of any practical use. Sorry. Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:52, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
- Nope; since the page is only loaded once, it's not possible to do any sort of iterative or recursive function on the page without javascript, which can't be embedded into a page unless the devs set it up to be part of the wiki software, like the sortable tables. I've actually tried to set up a recursive template, but the devs have caught onto that as well and set the software up to detect and stop template loops. Sorry. Hersfold (t/a/c) 23:27, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

- Have you read Wikipedia:Notability (web)? Here is what it says: for a website to be notable by Wikipedia's standards, it must satisfy any one of the following:
- The content itself has been the subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the site itself.
- The website or content has won a well-known and independent award from either a publication or organization.
- The content is distributed via a medium which is both respected and independent of the creators, either through an online newspaper or magazine, an online publisher, or an online broadcaster.
- Does your article satisfy any of these criteria? If it does, then it is probably worthy of inclusion into Wikipedia, as long as you can prove it with reliable third party sources. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 22:45, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- I and the website are heavily promoted by my school, Feilding Intermediate, and a local real estate company, Harcourts. I believe this would make my article worthy of inclusion in wikipedia. If you were able to ask anyone there, they would tell you a heap of stuff relating to my website. Cody.feilding.nz (talk) 23:04, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

- Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this alone meets WP:WEB. If you think that the website is notable based on any of the criteria listed above then you must be able to prove it with reliable sources. For example, if your website has been the subject in a reliable newspaper, or other publication, then it may be considered notable. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 23:25, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

- Hi Cody.feilding.nz! A page must meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines to be included into Wikipedia. Since you haven't been able to show how this article meets this criteria, I don't think that the page will be unprotected. If you think that the page is notable, you must add reliable, third-party sources to prove it. Best regards, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 23:25, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

I realize the article could be improved with the addition of photographs and Deertrees has offered me use of their photos; however, although they own the photo rights they do not have the required photographer's information. Any advice? Thank you again.--Bwp3 (talk) 17:50, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Bwp3! Unfortunately I am not very familiar with theaters, so I may not be the right person to review this article. For starters though, make sure this article meets the criteria posed by Wikipedia:Notability. Generally, articles need references from third party, reliable sources to prove their notability. Otherwise, they may be deleted. In other words, just make sure that you show that the article asserts how it is notable by citing sources (it seems that this may already have been done to an extent). If you need help doing this, just let me know. Also, it appears that only one other article currently links to Deertrees Theatre (List of Registered Historic Places in Cumberland County, Maine). See if you can find places where adding a link to Deertrees Theatre would be appropriate. Other than that, the article is off to a good start. Keep up your contributions. Adopting?
Hi! I'm phschoirgirl, and I was hoping you could adopt me. I'm looking for some input on the article about the California Proposition 10 (1998) Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Phschoirgirl (talk • contribs) 14:05, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- Sure, I'd be glad to adopt you. The California Proposition 10 (1998) article is looking good. For starters though, it needs inline citations. If you need help with these just let me know. Also, as a courtesy to other users, try to remember to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). Thanks, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 22:28, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
- I would love some help with that. The two things I am having great difficulty getting are the inline citations and posting a picture with my article. Phschoirgirl (talk) 01:02, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Here is how you put inline citations in an article:
- First, put the text "<ref> </ref>" around the text you wish to cite. For example, to cite Google.com, you would add<ref>[http://www.google.com/ Google] Retrieved December 14, 2008</ref>
- Then, under a section titled "references" or "notes" add the text <references />. This will automatically arrange all of the article's notes.
I recommend testing this out here, at your own personal sandbox, where you can make all the test edits you want. To add images, you first must upload them. Once you have uploaded an image (or if you already have), let me know, and we can continue from there. Let me know if this doesn't make sense, good luck, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 01:24, 15 December 2008 (UTC)- I apparently and not clicking on the correctly link but i can not seem to figure out the photo uploading. I did get the citations and am in the process of doing that. Thank you. Phschoirgirl (talk) 04:28, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Try going to Special:Upload and uploading it there. Let me know if this doesn't work. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 20:31, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- That special upload page says I am unauthorized and that it's restricted to uploaders, administrators and one other group —Preceding unsigned comment added by Phschoirgirl (talk • contribs) 05:07, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Welcome & userbox
Thanks for the welcome. Do we have a template/userbox of some sort for the WikiProject: Magazines that I can put on my userpage? --Flashflash; (talk) 20:39, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
- Okay Flashflash;, I've just made a userbox for WikiProject Magazines. Just add {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Magazines/Userbox}} to your user page. Thanks again for joining the project! Arbitrarily0 (talk) 23:28, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
