Bryan Ida
[edit]Bryan Ida is a Japanese-American artist who grew up in the Palo Alto,California. Currently Ida is an artist in the Bay area. Ida's most popular works are portraits made from clusters of meaningful words. Ida's goal is to use his platform to speak out about recent social and political issues. Ida states his passion is,"...the daily challenge of working through problems of composition and palette and finding deeper meaning in the interaction of color and form as well as the constant flow of problems and challenges met with some form of resolution be it right or wrong."(Ida, 2021).
Early Life & Education
[edit]Bryan Ida began his artistic journey in music. Ida began playing French Horn as a child. Ida played in both the El Camino youth symphony and school orchestras. Ida attended both San Jose State and Sonoma State University, where he went on to study electronic music composition. Ida claims that the experience of painting and playing music is different but the expression is the same.
In 1988 Ida worked for Sam Francis, an expressionist painter and his mentor. Francis and Ida were friends as children. Francis invited Ida to work as his studio assistant in Palo Alto when Ida began his experience of working with an artist on a daily basis. Ida expresses his appreciation towards Francis calming Francis was an influence into painting.
Ida's journey began in a studio in Venice where Francis provided Ida with free access to paint, paper and canvas. That was when Ida began focusing more on painting rather than music.
22 years ago, Ida completely committed to painting which lead him to fell that he finally found his place in the world (Ida, 2021).
"Grandfather" by Brian Ida
[edit]In this article Karen Lauer (2021) introduces one of Bryan Ida’s most well-known art pieces. Bryan Ida is known for his 5-foot portrait of his grandfather that he created out of multiple words. The words are not just any words, these words are the text of the Executive Order 9066. The reason Ida used this document to create this artwork is because this picture was taken by Dorothea Lange as Ida’s grandfather was heading to the Topaz Interment Camo in Utah. His grandfather lived the time in which 112,000 first-generation and American-born Japanese Americans were forced to move to internment camps just because of their heritage. Bryan Ida expresses that his purpose for this specific kind of art is to depict history through art to hopefully one day keep history from repeating itself. An experienced journalist, Karen Lauer is aware that Ida’s stance is political and so she also spoke to Adena Ishii. Ishii went to Santa Clara University has education in law. We are also informed that Ishii is a moderator for Ida’s virtual exhibit. The journalist explains that Ishii hopes that Ida’s art is visited so that the youth can avoid repeating history and older generations can remember history. Sadly, in recent past events, Ida created another form of art to depict the feelings of Muslims when former President Donald Trump signed the Executive Order 13769 which was an order of barring citizens of Muslim.
Interview with Bryan Ida
[edit]In this article about Bryan Ida’s artistic styles, Claire Murphy (2021) is able to interview and report exactly how Ida became an artist and what his art stands for. The article begins by informing the readers that Ida’s first form of artistic style was music. From music he took on a mentor, Sam Francis, which informed Ida about his observations. Francis informed Ida that he noticed visual art would naturally come to Ida. This conversation was Ida’s beginning to create today’s popular collection of prints and portraits called “Con.text”. These creations are all about significant historical events that impacted people. Ida describes the pieces as a story and Ida expressed his belief that every person carries a story, whether the person has been oppressed or had been the oppressor. This article provides a variety of information from Bryan Ida’s background, his journey, his artistic methods of creating art, to the main purpose of his art pieces. The journalist does a great job of including quotes of Bryan Ida’s stance on current political and social issue and even gets a hint on the upcoming project. The presentation of the article has great potential as it is structed in a chronological order ending with Ida’s current main focus for his next project. Ending with a quote from Ida expressing his purpose to keep creating art and providing a link to view Ida’s whole art collection.
