Kim Kardashian, who is half Armenian on her father's side, made a trip to visit the Armenian Genocide Memorial in April 2015 with her husband, Kanye West, their daughter North West, as well as sister Khloe Kardashian. The Kardashian's purpose for traveling to Armenia was to raise global awareness on the genocide which was commemorating its 100th anniversary. During the trip, the reality television star advertised her contributions to the genocide's recognition by posting various pictures through multiple social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram. Here is one of the pictures that Kim posted to her Twitter account. https://twitter.com/KimKardashian/status/585932095383543808 [1]Kim's father, Robert Kardashian was the third generation from Armenian-American and would often influence Armenian culture on Kim and her siblings. Kim stated in her article which was published in Time magazine "it was such a big part of our life: We’d eat Armenian food, we would listen to stories—my dad was really outspoken about our history"[2]. The Kardashian family move from Armenia to Los Angeles in 1914, a year before the genocide occurred.
For the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, The Wall Street Journal published a full-page ad that contained a URL for a genocide denial group called FactCheck Armenia. In response, Kim wrote a letter titled "The Armenian Genocide: Money Talks, and Right Now its Talking Shit." In her letter, Kim criticized the Wall Street Journal's decision to publish the ad by stating "it's shameful and unacceptable". After she had posted the letter on her blog, it was published in The New York Times. The letter was funded by Armenian Educational Foundation, an organization whose main goal is to advance the Armenian heritage through education. In the same month that Kim's trip took place, the superstar also wrote an article for Times Magazine stating her discomfort towards President Obama's word choice, or lack thereof. Kim was upset that President Obama did not use the word genocide during one of his speeches that occurred around the time of the 100th anniversary of the genocide. [3] President Obama reframed from using the word 'Genocide' due to his belief that it would hurt America's relations with Turkey. [4]
