Thanks

Thanks... It goes without saying that I should have done this in the first place, rather than letting myself get dragged into that one. I appreciate your effort to calm the situation down. I will self-trout myself for letting it get out of hand. :-) Hiberniantears (talk) 19:40, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi, on the Talk of the protected Template:Country data Republic of the Congo I left a question. Could you take a look at it (since I saw you can edit it). It helps the disambiguation of al these Congo's. Bye, -DePiep (talk) 21:05, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Ireland cricket team flagicon

Hi Andrwsc, When looking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket/Team templates, I notice that Ireland is missing a flagicon. This is presumably because the Irish cricket team represents the whole island, rather than just the Republic of Ireland. Could you please alter Template:Country data Ireland so that the flag used for the variant "cricket" is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_Irish_cricket_team.svg

Is it possible for you to then alter Template:Cr and Template:Cr-rt such that  Ireland and Ireland  show up with the flag?

Thanks, 210.9.141.203 (talk) 09:04, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Per the discussion at WT:WikiProject Cricket and Template talk:Country data Ireland, that is a derivative of a copyrighted image, and therefore can't be transcluded by a flag template per WP:Non-free content criteria. Sorry — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 15:54, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
I see. Thanks for looking into it anyway. 210.9.141.203 (talk) 16:52, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Correct Flag to replace the `Missing Blue Ensign.svg`

Hi, i noted that you protected this page some time ago. However i have also noticed the British colonial flag has not been added to the Flag variants, as it states only `Missing Blue Ensign.svg`. I would be grateful if you could add the correct flag in, as displayed in British Ceylon. --Rockybiggs (talk) 13:25, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Country data Canada

Hi.

Would you care to have a look at what I posted on the Country data Canada talkpage?

Thanks.

LarRan (talk) 19:06, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for correcting the Ihw, Ihw-rt and Ih-big templates. Unfortunately it works only in part. I believe a change in the Country data templates is inevitable.
LarRan (talk) 12:22, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Fixed Last night I made those initial edits while waiting to board a flight, so I couldn't finish the job before getting on the plane. I started to edit some of the country data templates today, but changed my mind and changed Template:ih et. al. instead. The issue is that about half of the articles in Category:National ice hockey teams are of the form "...men's national ice hockey team" and the other half are just "...national ice hockey team". Flag templates such as {{ih}} are used to create a standardized naming convention, but those names can be over-ridden by extra code in specific country data templates. In the end, I thought it would be better to make "...men's national ice hockey team" the standard form, and create a bunch of redirects for the lesser-known hockey teams that do not have "men's" in the name. That way, none of the country data templates need override code (and the "weight" and complexity that comes with it). Hope this helps — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 22:14, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
Ok. Thanks for your effort. Yesterday I had another idea, see what you think of this one: We've got the Ih template, which defaults/redirects to the men's teams (whether in the article name or not). Then we have the Ihw template that explicitly links to the women's teams. How about if we created an Ihm template, that (obviously) would link explicitly to the men's teams? Those who wanted, could then, where appropriate, replace the Ih template with the Ihm template. The Ihm template would have "mw = men's", the Ihw template would have "mw = women's", and the Ih template would have the mw parameter empty (it would then have lose any default value that's present now). The empty mw parameter would then link to the "genderless" version (Xxxxx national ice hockey team), which could be either a redirect to the men's team, or a dab page presenting the men's and women's (and junior variants) teams. This has a logical appeal to me. What do you think? Sorry if it means more work for you...
Cheers LarRan (talk) 07:31, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, I can't think of any situation where an editor would intentionally want a flagged link to a disambiguation page. These templates are almost always used for results formatting, and therefore you'd always want to link to the appropriate team (men's or women's). If you think it is a good idea, maybe run it by the hockey WikiProject, but personally I don't see a need for it. Thanks — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:12, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

WP:olympics award proposal

I'd like to run something by you. I've been thinking of ways to encourage editors to work on copy editing articles to bring them to GA and FA standards. Many other projects use awards as a "carrot" so to speak. I was thinking it might be a good idea to do the same for the Olympics project. In taking a page from the MilHist awards page they have an A-Class medal with four different grades. I was thinking of something similar, perhaps named "Olympic Order" with bronze, silver, gold and gold with olive wreath grades. We would put it to the community for final approval and then list various accomplishments that would have to be met in order to receive the various grades. I have no abilities with graphic design and would probably seek help from the Reward Board. But first do you think this is a good idea? Is it even worth the effort? I've been lamenting the fact that we basically have one award, The Olympics Barnstar, that is exclusive to the Olympics page, while this Olympic Order would be awarded only for meeting certain criteria rather than for undefined "contributions", having more than the one award would be a nice upgrade for this project. What are your thoughts? H1nkles (talk) 19:19, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Sure, I don't think it would hurt to try. Personally, I'm not motivated by those sorts of things—I just like to edit for the satisfaction of improving the encyclopedia. I know my WP:OLY edits have been slow lately, but it's been tough to find time to do all the things I want to do... — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:13, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
I completely understand. I will do a little more research on this sort of thing and then see about an award(s). I appreciate your input. H1nkles (talk) 21:38, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

US Olympic Flags

Hi, I see that you made the change on the template page. However, the 1908 Olympics and the USA at the 1908 Olympics pages still show the later flag (even though the correct template is used.) Any idea why this is? Alanmjohnson (talk) 21:11, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

It's probably just a cache issue; that is a high-use template. Try a null edit on the article in question to verify this. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:16, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
That's it. Thanks.Alanmjohnson (talk) 21:21, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Heyo

It's a bit of a sensitive topic but I figured I'll raise it non-the-less. Currently, there seems to be a flag template that transfers {{flag|Palestine}} to a Palestinian flag and the word Palestine which links to Palestinian territories. Currently, Palestinian territories are split between Hamas and Fatah and they are not considered as a "state". As such, I believe it would be preferred to either link the template to "Palestinian territories" or to the "Palestinian National Authority". This caught my attention while rummaging through the country by population page and checking the template, I think the edit which may have caused this issue is this one. You can reply here if you wish... I'll be watching the page.
Warm regards, JaakobouChalk Talk 18:20, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

There are several different templates that render the Palestinian flag (with various wikilinks), and it sounds like {{flag|Palestinian Authority}} is the one you are looking for. Hope this helps — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:01, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
The other templates are OK, best I'm aware, but the {{flag|Palestine}} one currently refers to an historical region rather than a country\territory and it needs to refer to either Palestinian Territories or Palestinian National Authority. Current situation, where the text says "Palestine" but the link is to the Palestinian Territories article is a bit strange and should be, IMHO, fixed.
Hope I've clarified the issue this time :) JaakobouChalk Talk 21:41, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, since the wikilink that {{flag|Palestine}} renders is effectively the same as [[Palestinian territories|Palestine]], there is no linked reference to the historical region. The display name may be confusing for some instances in which that flag template is used, but it is also necessary for other instances (such as links to the Palestine national football team. Again, you can always change {{flag|Palestine}} to {{flag|Palestinian territories}} anywhere you think that is necessary, but {{flag}} is not able to change the wikilink display name to something different than what is passed to it. If "Palestine" is the input parameter to the template, then "Palestine" is the display text for the wikilink. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:56, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation.

Hello, would you mind taking a look at the page? I think it's pretty close to being FAC ready (it just needs a copyedit), but I also think it would be useful if someone who knows a lot about the Games took a look. Template:Football in Northern Ireland‎;

The Ulster Banner should only be used when the article is solely referring to the International football team - it is not used for national or regional use. In light of this can you explain your revert.--Vintagekits (talk) 21:49, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

That navbox has had that flag for 2½ years, similar to the style of the other ~100 "Football in ..." navboxes. Since all Northern Ireland international teams are linked from that box, there is no reason to exclude the flag that is universally acknowledged to represent those teams. You will need consensus (from WP:FOOTY, I presume) to change the style of this, or any other template in that series. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:55, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
If it was a nav box for only NI international teams then the flag would be appropriate - but it also includes local level football where the Ulster Banner is not used. Also the style of the template box does not seem to be effected on the Template:Football in Scotland or Template:Football in England pages as they dont have a flag on them. --Vintagekits (talk) 22:05, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

Dear User:Andrwsc, For these flag images, I am tempted to apply {{flagicon image}} but I do not completely understand when you feel that is appropriate so I would appreciate some guidance. Thank you. :)--Thecurran (talk) 13:29, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

My opinion from before is that icon-sized images are essentially useless on pages like this. Icons are useful navigational aids in certain instances, but I think your intent on this page is to add useful encyclopedia content. Therefore, I would suggest putting the flag images in a separate table column and render them at a decent size (like 45px) (using normal wiki image syntax instead of using a template) so that some detail is visible. This approach works well on pages such as States of Brazil, U.S. state, and perhaps Cantons of Switzerland and States of Germany (for the table with coats of arms). I see icon-sized images on some of the articles in Category:First-level administrative country subdivisions, such as States and territories of Australia, but to be honest, I feel those pages are less effective than the pages where larger flag or CoA images are displayed. Hope this helps — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:25, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. That does help. :)--Thecurran (talk) 16:31, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

It seems pertinent and appropriately licensed but I do not want to undermine your deletion. Thanks. :)--Thecurran (talk) 05:03, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

No, that's also a non-free image, and so cannot be rendered by template under any circumstances, and should only appear on a minimal number of articles (and not on any user page). This is Wikipedia policy, not just a guideline. Currently, the image is missing the required fair-use rationales for the other two articles it now appears on. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 05:17, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 02:17, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

the only reason i am asking is in the past i have had a problem with proding and afd articles before (look at my talk page) and so i have desided to ask to ask a admin when i think a article could/ should be deleted i hope you understand and thanks for help alreadyOo7565 (talk) 03:14, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Ah, ok, I have read your talk page, so I think I understand your hesitation to nominate that article yourself. But I should not be your "proxy" for any deletion nomination; it would be disingenuous to use my admin status to confer any kind of authority. Admins should be no different from any other editors with respect to deletion nominations. Also, I have no expert knowledge on this subject, or what constitutes notability for software, so I suggest asking other editors who work in that topic area for their opinions—WP:WikiProject IRC perhaps? Macedonia / Olympics

Hi, thanks for your input at the Macedonia RfC. Good to have this feedback from people involved with the other topic domains. Just a question, because you specially mentioned the Olympic Committee of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia case: are you certain about that official-name status? Because apparently the committee itself officially refers to itself as the "Macedonian Olympic Committee" too [1], though it is of course called by the longer name by its international parent organisation [2]. It may be an interesting special case. Don't know if you saw it, but there has actually been a move request open at the article talk page, but it's been held open until the central discussion finishes. Fut.Perf. 17:32, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Ah, excellent point, and I had not seen that. I was looking at the European Olympic Committees page, where our convention is to use the full name as specified by the IOC. But perhaps a piped link is more appropriate there, as we do for some other NOCs (e.g. article name is in English, but IOC's preferred name—even on their English language website—is in another language). — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:39, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Ok, great! I did a few more earlier today also. The inappropriate links seem to be a mixture of: malformed dates, linking ordinal numbers for no good reason, using link syntax instead of <ref>, and links that should be disambiguated. It definitely requires manual intervention to clear out the whole set. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 21:41, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

I will take a look at that to see what can be done. The solution ought to be simple, using something like Template:Map country code as is necessary for the codes for Antigua and Barbuda and Bahrain. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:14, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Macedonia / Olympics follow-up

Hi Andrwsc, here's a follow-up about the Macedonia/Olympics discussion we had the other day. The Centralized Discussion has now concluded with a consensus for the position we both supported (see WP:MOSMAC2), i.e. using plain "Macedonia" in most Olympics-related contexts. I've begun to implement this in a couple of places, and I now notice that most of the "FYR"s are pulled in through a single template, {{Country IOC alias MKD}}, which currently says "FYR Macedonia". Apparently it gets transcluded through {{flagIOC}} on multiple pages, and through {{Infobox Country Olympics}} on the Macedonia-focused articles. On a quick scan through the "whatlinkshere" list I couldn't find an occasion where the result could not validly be replaced with plain "Macedonia". Do you think it would be okay to edit this template? Fut.Perf. 07:48, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Update: Seeing as you may be on some sort of wiki-break or vacations, I've taken the question to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics. I'll go ahead with the change if there are no objections there. Enjoy your break, --Fut.Perf. 08:20, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, I was indeed on a week-long vacation. Your edit to that template was precisely the right way to fix it. It looks like you've also handled all of the other templates, but I will keep an eye open for anything else. Thanks! — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:09, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

alt text for flag templates

Before we get too deeply into this I should say (1) I'm not visually impaired, and my opinion counts less than readers who are impaired, and (2) screen readers can be configured in many different ways, so whatever advice I can give you is somewhat generic and will be contradicted in some cases in practice. So, for example, for {{fb|Brazil}} Brazil one screen reader might say "Brazil link Brazil national football team link", while another might just say "Brazil Brazil" in a high-pitched voice. Although I don't have a strong feeling about this particular example, it might be better in this case to have the flag icon not have a link or alt text, so that a screen reader says just "Brazil national football team link", or just "Brazil". After all, I expect that the benefit to the sighted reader of being able to go directly to the Brazil article is fairly small in these cases; it might even be negative. Ok. I pride myself on being neutral—especially in the face of nationalism, which I see a lot in my Wiki editing. I have had to deal with Serbian-Croatian conflict, German nationalism, Russian nationalism, etc. even on sports-related edits, which are my main area of interest. I have linked User:Moreschi/The Plague from my user page, as I agree strongly with that essay. I view myself as a "citizen of the world", having lived and worked in multiple countries on multiple continents. (In fact, I'm currently resident in a country of which I am not a citizen.) I do not advertise my passport nationality. I object to be grouped into a particular nationality grouping (even "unknown/other"), especially if that may be thrown back at me someday as an accusation of a particular nationalist bias or POV. Thanks for looking at this. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 17:16, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

This is a highly-visible template, so put a {{editprotected}} request on the talk page and an admin will look at that request. The flag image you had added was not used anywhere on en.wiki as a flag icon, so does not need to be in that template per WP:WikiProject Flag Template conventions. These templates are transcluded in thousands of places, so should not be expanded unnecessarily. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 19:53, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

should not be expanded unnecessarily?? what??.--TownDownHow's going? 19:57, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Per Wikipedia:High-risk templates, this template is protected because it is transcluded on about 15,000 pages. Your addition of the "Guarantees" variant was not documented within the template per WP:WikiProject Flag Template instructions. I suggest you read them before attempting to make changes to any of the flag templates. And the image itself (File:Flag of the Three Guarantees.svg) is not used in icon form anywhere on this Wikipedia, so there is absolutely no point in making this high-use template larger for no reason whatsoever. In any case, if you want to make changes to the template, put your request on Template talk:Country data Mexico under a {{editprotected}} template. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 20:06, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Of course the "Guarantees" variant was not documented within the template, because you blocked it exactly when I'm writing!. Also there are new flags in svg format to update and please read Flag of Mexico. --TownDownHow's going? 20:23, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
You did not make a request for this template. The edit history shows a single request made by User:Orange Tuesday, which I responded to all of 9 minutes later. Please put together all your suggested changes to this template so that a single edit can be made. It is not appropriate for you to experiment on it, or to add pieces one at a time. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 20:25, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Then you are a guard of this template, OK.--TownDownHow's going? 21:51, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Template:Country data Mexico

What are you doing?, please unblock this template and let me fix it.--TownDownHow's going? 05:46, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I am repairing the damage caused by your removal of three variant labels that are still in use on several articles. Those labels must be changed before the variants can be removed from the template. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 05:50, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
It's more simple to change those articles that used wrong dates and old flags, you must not change the template I put.--TownDownHow's going? 05:52, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
No. Removing a flag variant from the template before it is replaced makes it very difficult to find the instances in which it is transcluded. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 05:54, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
It's getting late and I'd like to know how must be this template. The articles you said are not 15,000 pages.--TownDownHow's going? 05:58, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
If you remove variant labels before they have been replaced, you must look at all 15,000 transclusions of the template, instead of only the several dozen instances of the obsolete image. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 06:00, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
First, this template was built incorrectly, and as professional mexican I can't allow this. 15,000?? in Wikipedia in English??, if you could unblock this template I could do everything you're doing, because it's not a big deal. --TownDownHow's going? 06:07, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
Where are you??, look. I'm trying my best in this, flags in svg, history information and more. This template was incorrect before my editions. Please don't revert my editions to the last wrong template.--TownDownHow's going? 06:35, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

Chronology

| flag alias-1821 = Flag of Mexico (1821-1823).svg
| flag alias-1823 = Flag of Mexico (1823-1864, 1867-1893).svg
| flag alias-1864 = Flag of Mexico (1864-1867).svg
| flag alias-1867 = Flag of Mexico (1823-1864, 1867-1893).svg
| flag alias-1893 = Flag of Mexico (1893-1916).svg
| flag alias-1916 = Flag of Mexico (1916-1934).svg
| flag alias-1934 = Flag of Mexico (1934-1968).svg

You must repeat the same flag with alias-1823 and flag alias-1867.

1821, 1823, 1864, 1867, 1893, 1916, 1934. --TownDownHow's going? 16:01, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

In this case, there is no need for the same flag to be available with two different labels. The "1823" label can be used for all instances of that flag. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 16:10, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
If you put the other label can be more clear to the people who doesn't understand that the same flag was used in two different times, because it can be confused, think about it. The Wikiproject Mexico is watching all mexican things. --TownDownHow's going? 17:31, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

I replied here. Sorry I wasn't very prompt, but I've already dealt with the usage issue (as far as I know). Currently hunting for a representative of the committee just to make sure. Master of Puppets - Call me MoP! :D 00:00, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
