Administrators' newsletter – April 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2021).

Administrator changes

removed AlexandriaHappyme22RexxS

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Technical news

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Help needed for Quad (company)

Hello, I'm Tina, and I work for the Wisconsin-based company Quad. I recently made several edit requests to update Quad's Wikipedia page, and was hoping someone with a special interest in Wisconsin and the companies that grew up there, would like to help out with those edits. I would really appreciate it if you could go over to the Talk:Quad page and look over and implement my edit requests which add a lot of important information to the page. Thanks so much, Tina at Quad (talk) 14:22, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Technical news

  • Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hello, I see on your user page that you use JSTOR and I'd like to know more about your experience. By my calculations, a good 70 % of the main JSTOR content is now available for everyone at Internet Archive Scholar, with full text search provided e.g. at https://scholar.archive.org/ . The service is still in beta, but I've used it for some source-finding and it seems quite usable to me; I wonder whether that's just my experience. If you have a chance, the next time you'd be looking for a source on Google Scholar or JSTOR or similar, to perform the same search on IA scholar instead, I'd be curious to hear how it ends up. Thanks, Nemo 19:06, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

@Nemo, I tried finding: A.Mark Smith translator of De Aspectibus from the Latin and editor, Alhacen on Refraction (2010), which is an English translation of De Aspectibus. De Aspectibus is a Latin translation of all 7 books of Alhacen's Kitab al Manazir c.1027 in Arabic, or Book of Optics, which has 7 parts, denoted books 1 to 7. Internet Archive Scholar found Smith 2010 Alhacen on Refraction, which is just part 7 of Kitab al Manazir (volume 1 is the Introduction, and Latin translation from Arabic c.1270; Volume 2 is the English translation and footnotes) (Smith 2001, 2006, 2008, and 2010 each have a Volume 1 and 2).
@Nemo The IAS data is somehow mixed up. Smith 2001 should be the first three books of Alhacen, Smith 2006 should be books 4-5, Smith 2008 should be book 6. Smith 2010 translates Alhacen's book 7 as Alhacen on Refraction, which IAS found. But A.Mark Smith is also the translator of all 7 books of De Aspectibus from the Latin. The first three books, or Smith 2001 Alhacen's theory of Visual Perception, were not so easy to find on Internet Archive Scholar.
My years of experience using JSTOR have made searches on JSTOR far easier for me; my edits on Book of Optics, Ibn Al-Haytham, Scientific method, etc use JSTOR citations. I could switch, but I am apprehensive of the time I would have to invest in a new user experience. If you would like me to dig,
I could pursue this. For example I could try to find Elizabeth Asmis, Epicurus' scientific method on Internet Archive Scholar.
No results matched your criteria; Something went wrong. If the problem persists, please contact us.
-- 22:09, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
A vanilla search from the browser yielded the pages of Asmis' book on archive.org. But then I have to log in. How vulnerable is archive.org? I doubt they are as big as Wikimedia. --Ancheta Wis   (talk | contribs) 22:18, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Next, I (manually, it's not like Google Scholar) searched for Epicurus' idea that an event (however unlikely) must show up during the infinite passage of time ... and there it was, on pp.258-259. -- 23:01, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Then I searched for the idea that 'the gods live in the interstices [between the atoms (the void)]' What I found on p.320 was "as Lucretius shows, the Epicureans in turn inferred that the gods cannot have an abode in this world, since the world is too coarsely textured to support them; thus the gods live in the interspaces between worlds.[79]" .
@Nemo In summary, archive.org does not support multi-word search, but single-word search works. Not as easy to use as JSTOR searches of multi-word searches, but you can get used to it. -- 23:35, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
https://scholar.archive.org/ (IAS?) depends on the completeness of its repository. I was hoping to test multi-word searches for
  • the full text of Elizabeth Asmis (1984), Epicurus' scientific method, but nothing.
  • Elizabeth Asmis (1976), Epicurus' scientific method is an IBM selectric typed manuscript which exists in pdf, is not available to IAS yet.
All of this reaffirms the value that Wikipedia itself provides. --Ancheta Wis   (talk | contribs) 02:10, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
No doubt on your final sentence!
Yes, for books it's better to search directly on archive.org, for instance there is https://archive.org/details/epicurusscientif0000asmi . Many Internet Archive books can also be found from a general search engine, but using https://archive.org/search.php ensures that you're not missing anything and that you can use a full text search.
Now sure what you mean by "vulnerable", but the Internet Archive has a size comparable to that of the Wikimedia Foundation, as they both have hundreds of employees and collaborators, although I believe the Wikimedia Foundation nowadays has ten times the budget. The Internet Archive has been around for longer than the Wikimedia Foundation and has a more stable course; it's also generally more committed to user privacy. I definitely recommend creating an account there.
JSTOR/Ithaka Harbors on the other hand is a very puzzling entity and I'm not sure how long it will be around. Nowadays it seems to be mostly some kind of financial institution, designed to facilitate the transfer of wealth from universities to publishers: maybe for this reason its board is stacked with people from private equity funds. According to its form 990, its biggest expenses are publisher payments and executive compensation, while only a fraction of the revenues goes into paying for additional services to users.
