Tartus Article

Hi Anas! I'm planning on re-writing Tartus article completely if I'm lucky enough to find all the sources I need at the public library. My aim is to raise the quality of the article to GA or possibly getting it nominated for a featured article. I'm wondering if you can tell me about the process of assessing articles or if you can co-operate with me on that. Regards Ahmadac 20:15, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Oh, that's wonderful; I like your enthusiasm. I am ready to help you get this to WP:GA, or even WP:FA if we have the resources. To get a good idea of what a GA is, see WP:GA?. Basically, a GA has to be comprehensive, neutral, and well-sourced. Taking a quick look at the article tells me that the article needs significant expansion, in addition to a lot of referencing. I can help you with a copyedit, formatting the article and the references. Good luck, and thank you for your anticipated efforts. —Anas talk? 00:20, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you!!

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
I, The Sunshine Man award you Anas this barnstar for taking the time to leave a comment just to wish me all the best, I was just about to remove the tag as I'm recovered now, thank you. Warmly — The Sunshine Man 14:39, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

How do you pronounce your first name? Until(1 == 2) 15:16, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Anas is an Arabic name; it is pronounced as Ānas (IPA: [aːns]). Can't read that? OK, then. The first part, An, is like the an in man; the second part, as is like the as in cast. The name is derived from another Arabic word which means entertainment or enjoyment and means someone you would enjoy sitting around. Why the "lol", though? :) —Anas talk? 15:31, 27 June 2007 (UTC)
I assure you my giggling was due solely to my juvenile mind. Until(1 == 2) 04:06, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

RfA

Thank you for your support and comments at my RfA
Hi Anas, It still amazes me that otherwise "anonymous" editors take the time to place !votes and comments on RfAs. Whilst I would have normally thanked you at the time of you leaving your message, the importance of my not appearing to be canvassing prevented me from so doing. Now that everything has progressed successfully I can finally thank you. I intend to uphold a style of good adminship and will welcome your further comments at any time in the future, even if they are in the form of admonishment. I will be happy to help as an admin wherever and whenever I can --VS talk 22:51, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

RfA thanks

Hi Anas Salloum. Thank you for your support and kind words in my RfA, which passed with 95 support, 1 oppose, and 1 neutral !votes. It means a lot to me to have your individual support and the collective support of so many others. I truly will strive to carry myself at a level representing the trust bestowed in me as I use the mop to address the never-ending drips of discontent in need of caretaker assistance.

Hi Anas, and thank you for the message you left on my talk page. You are correct, I am of Lebanese ancestry. Glad to know you. Please let me know if I may ever be of assistance. Majoreditor 15:15, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Re: delete article

Being worn by celebrities does not really establish notability. Please read up on WP:CORP. Has it been the subject of secondary sources? Such sources must be reliable, and independent of the subject. It is important that all content be attributable.

The "secondary sources" in the criterion include reliable published works in all forms, such as (for examples) newspaper articles, books, television documentaries, and published reports by consumer watchdog organizations except for the following:

  • Press releases; autobiographies; advertising for the company, corporation, organization, or group; and other works where the company, corporation, organization, or group talks about itself — whether published by the company, corporation, organization, or group itself, or re-printed by other people. Self-published material or published at the direction of the subject of the article would be a primary source and falls under a different policy.
  • Works carrying merely trivial coverage; such as (for examples) newspaper articles that simply report meeting times or extended shopping hours, or the publications of telephone numbers, addresses, and directions in business directories.

Thank you, Anas talk? 00:37, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it has been subject to secondary sources. It was featured in dec 06 on the G4 Icons Tony Alva, was also featured in Revolver Magazine in 06 as a sponsor (ads). Has been featured on radio stations in the LA area. I am sure there is even more out there about them, I just don't know about yet, but is that not what Wikipedia is for? So others can add on what they know or find? Naja —The preceding unsigned comment was added by NajaWillis (talkcontribs).
Ads are not secondary sources, because they fall under advertising, which is not considered a secondary source per above (WP:CORP). If you like, you can take another shot at the article, and try to include references. If you do, I will take it to AFD for it to be discussed and for consensus to be established on whether it is notable or not. Thank you for your cooperation, Naja. My RfA

Thank you for participating in my RfA. It was successful, and I am now, may God have mercy on us all, an administrator. Look at all the new buttons! I had heard about 'protect,' 'block user,' and 'delete,' but no one told me about 'kill,' 'eject,' and 'purée.' My recent RfB

Thank you so much for your participation in my recent RfB. Though it closed with 72% support (below the required 90%), I'm still quite pleased at the outpouring of support shown by a fair percentage of the community.

I'm currently tabulating and calculating all opposing and neutral arguments to help me better address the community's concerns about my abilities as a bureaucrat. Thanks for the invitation to join the Syria wikiproject. The project page looks great. Muwaffaq inshallah! Unfortunately I haven't really time, or much inclination, to be involved in Wikipedia at the moment, but if that changes I'll certainly do my bit for the representation of Syria. Palmiro | Talk 22:31, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

I had pretty much banished wikipedia from my mind and then there appeared in my inbox an email abouit the board elections. So I ended up nosing around again and making a few edits. Probably mainly because I really ought to be doing something else, so any excuse for procrastination would do! I think this reappearance will be brief enough. Best of luck, anyway. Hi, could you add Arabic script to Doghmush? I'm not sure I've got the romanization correct but this is the way it appeared in the news today, upon Alan Johnston's release. Thank you! Badagnani 06:30, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the Arabic! I'm looking at the name in Arabic and I don't see any vowels written. I'm wondering how does one know which vowels should be pronounced between the D and GH, and between the M and SH? Badagnani 19:10, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
The Arabic language is more complex than other languages. The Arabic language uses a system of harakat, which are sort of like directions (or representations) for the pronunciation of vowels. It's quite complex; for example, a word always has two different pronunciations as an object and as a subject in the sentence. One haraka (sing.) is the damma, like in فُ, which is pronounced fu or fo. Doghmush has a damma between the d and the gh (دُغمش) and another one between the m and the sh (so it is دُغمُش). Of course, it might just be a representation of the way it is commonly pronounced in the Palestinian Arabic dialect. —Anas talk? 23:56, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Iraq Map

You seem to have extensive knowledge regarding middle eastern affairs and seem to use wikipedia quite easily. In the Syria article under the Governorates section there is a large detailed image that you have created. I would like to request that you might be able to something similar, or tell me how to create something similar, for the Iraq article. Thank you, and I await your reply, Abdalla A 21:23, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Abdalla! It's fairly simple, actually. First of all, you'll need a blank map of the governorates of Iraq. If you can't find a ready map, you can edit any free map, like what I did. Look for maps in Wikipedia or just edit the CIA World Factbook map. After you've got the map, you need to start a labelled map template. You can just follow the pattern of what I did in the Syrian governorates template. I just found a template for Iraqi football clubs, {{Iraq football labelled map}}. You can use the same map, and modify the links and positions. You'll need this tool for that. It gets really easy now. Just use the tool and copy the code, create the template, and place it wherever you like. On a side note, it's good to see another Arab-speaking user around here. Feel free to ask for more help if you're lost. All the best, Anas talk? 22:05, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the tips on creating the map, but unfortunately I seem to be having some problem with tool [1], I tried downloading it (version 4) and a small window appears in a .zip format that has a list of different things all related to image editing. Everytime I click one, it says unable to open because of required software. I tried different things such as downloading the latest the latest version of Java runtime, but nothing seems to work. Am I skipping step? Doing something wrong? Any tips?-- Abdalla A 09:04, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
