re : edit of Thomas Clough Daffern page
[edit]Hi there.
Normally, I would answer your question on my own talk page, to avoid confusion; however, in this case, I thought it would be better to copy the message back here, to your own talk page, so that you have the links.
Please do ask further questions on my talk page, where I will see them.
- Hi Chzz,
- Afraid I had problems with the live connection this morning, so I thought the best thing to do since I cannot remember my original username and password for the above Wikipedia page, was to create a new account and set it up again. Is this ok? And can I cancel the old page somehow ?
- Here is the last correspondence I had with you last year which is in your archive 14:
re: edit of Thomas Clough Daffern page
Thank you for responding so quickly to the suggested replacement article. Please can you explain in more detail the issue with copyright, and also if the references just need to be re-stylised in Wikepedia format? many thanks Chzz (Iipsgpeditor (talk) 12:10, 2 September 2009 (UTC)) (Iipsgpeditor (talk) 11:21, 4 September 2009 (UTC))
- Ref. Thomas Clough Daffern, see User:Iipsgpeditor/Thomas Clough Daffern Chzz ► 11:34, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
- The problem regarding copyright is, I googled for some of the phrases used in the proposed article and I found the exact same wording on various websites which are copyrighted.
- There are other problems than just that, and the referencing layout, however. A core policy of Wikipedia is verifiability - that means that the reader should be able to check the facts by following the references. That's why we need to present facts given in reliable sources. A lot of the information in the article cannot be verified, and therefore would not be suitable for inclusion. Please review WP:FIRST and WP:BLP. Cheers, Chzz ► 13:56, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
- Will the following text be acceptable now ??
- Draft article placed here, moved to User:Anandamayima/Thomas Clough Daffern June 2010 Chzz ► 21:25, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
(Anandamayima (talk) 14:36, 30 June 2010 (UTC))
- As you will see, I moved the draft article that you put on my talk page to your own userspace - User:Anandamayima/Thomas Clough Daffern June 2010.
- The main problem with it is, we need to see where the facts come from. It should be verifiable; the person reading it should be able to 'check the facts', by referring to the referenced 'reliable sources'.
- For example, it begins, Thomas Clough Daffern was born in 1956. Let us imagine, for the purposes of illustration, that this fact was in a book. You would write, for example,
Thomas Clough Daffern was born in 1956.<ref> "History of the Dafferns", by A. Person, Foo Publications, 2010, ISBN: 0123456789 </ref>
- I have added just that, on the page, in a section called 'Example reference' - to show you how it works. Please have a look, User:Iipsgpeditor/Thomas Clough Daffern#Example reference - notice the small [1], and click it.
How references work |
---|
Simple references[edit]These require two parts;
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
== References == {{reflist}} (an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections) To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Anandamayima/reftest and try it out. Named references[edit]Chzz was born in 1837, <ref name="MyBook"> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> in Footown.<ref name="MyBook"/> Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result. Citation templates[edit]You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look; Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation | last = Smith | first = John | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century | publication-date = 2001 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]] | page = 125 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4 }} </ref> Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result. For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs. |
- Please, as I said before, read over WP:FIRST.
