{{helpme}} I am the tech administrator for a private school in California, and none of the edits from our shared IP addresses have been useful. To discourage these sorts of edits while still allowing those with user accounts to edit wikipedia, I was wondering if someone could place a soft block on our IP addresses. To verify that I am indeed the admin, you can check the WHOIS data for www.cvc.org and send me an email at the address registered for that domain (not craigd@THEWORKS.COM, the other one) and I can let you know the IP's in question. I suppose the alternative is that I make enough edits to become a wikipedia admin then do it myself, but if one of you wonderful folks could take care of this I would greatly appreciate it.

Hmm...Well first thing, I'm not an admin so I can't help you there, but I'll give some information. First thing, I believe a user using a blocked IP can still log in so it you won't need a "soft block". Second, I don't think there's even a soft block. And third, I doubt that you could easily become an admin just so you can block an IP, the time and effort (not to mention having to remember policies) won't be worth it (just look at me, I've been here for about 4months and I'm still not an admin). But aside from that I think that block could be made possible, though I don't think this is the right place to request it. I remember this question being asked at the Help Desk a few days ago, with similar responses. While I am not an admin either, we usually do not block people on request, particularly IP addresses; blocks are only issued in cases of open proxies, repeated vandalism, severe disruption, or by the authority of the Arbitration Committee or Wikimedia Foundation in rare cases. Blocks prevent those who do want to make constructive edits from creating accounts from that IP address, or editing anonymously. You are welcome to make a request at the administrator's noticeboard, however I doubt it will be accepted.

In the event you were to become an admin, which I should point out is a rather long process that involves you demonstrating full knowledge and application of relevant policies and earning the trust of the community, such a block would most likely be seen as abuse of the administrative tools, as you would not only be acting against established policy but also with a conflict of interest.

Should your school's IP addresses make enough vandalism edits that it is becoming a problem, the address(es) will be blocked at that time. I hope this helps. Hersfold ^(t/a/c) 02:22, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
