Canon vs. fanon section suggestion
[edit]- The tug-of-war between canon and fanon has probably never been stronger than that witnessed with Star Trek fans. This section could borrow elements of the WikiProject page and explain what is canon and what isn't, and touch on how some aspects of fanon have become so entrenched within the fanbase that entire series have been rejected (namely Enterprise) on the basis that it did not confirm with fan-made expectations and assumptions. Have to be careful to maintain NPOV of course, but this is a rather unique aspect of Trek, I find. You don't see Star Wars fans campaigning (seriously at any rate) to decanonize Phantom Menace, even though it wasn't all that well liked.
- Similarly, such a section might also touch on Star Trek as religion. There are fans who take some of the principles created by Roddenberry such as IDIC and treat it as personal philosophy but also, almost as a religion. DS9, ENT, and several of the movies have come under fire from factions of fans who claim the shows violate Roddenberry's word. The Kill Enterprise website went so far as to refer to ENT as "a blasphemy" which I personally found very offensive. 23skidoo 04:10, 27 May 2005 (UTC)
Why is this article being rewritten?
[edit]The current content of Star Trek generally represents it well. The stuff on this page is obscure historical info that might fit better into Gene Roddenberry, the TOS page, or maybe a history of Star Trek page.
If folks just edit according to the Trek Wikiproject, the page should turn out fine.--StAkAr Karnak 21:15, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
- I believe the rewrite was in response to the original article being rejected for Featured Article status, so it was believed a top-down rewrite might improve chances, but at the same time the originator didn't want to disrupt the existing article. I contributed to the rewrite early on but it doesn't seem much has happened with it for awhile. 23skidoo 21:20, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
- I don't have much time for a rewrite anymore... but the problems should still be addressed. --AllyUnion (talk) 18:36, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
- The problems can probably be addressed by edits to the actual article. A complete rewrite would require an exhaustive merge process with the article now, as people continue to improve that page. A rewrite cannot simply be swapped in for the original, and the effort to integrate the two pages would be more than it's worth. Newnam 02:40, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
AFD tag this article
[edit]Hi,
Based on the comments on this discussion page, I'm gonna AFD this article. I'll leave messages on relevant talk pages. This looks like something that should be saved off to someone's hard drive, and trickled into the main article bit by bit. Thanks for your patience. --Ling.Nut 04:27, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
