Bruce Lee
[edit]Wikipedia article have to be modest and keep neutral point of view. Bruce Lee did not compete as a martial artist (say as Jet Li), and didn't win an Academy Award. It is not easy to define "the greatest" in the movie industry, except for movie grossing and polls conducted by major "authorities"; I'm afraid Black Belt magazine is not such. "Bruce Lee was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century" is encyclopedic enough and can be copied to the lead of the article, I guess. Ok, that´s good, thanks. My first question: Why do you mean the Black Belt magazine is not a major "authoritie"? It´s just one source, but it´s one of the most recognized martial arts magazines around (http://www.blackbeltmag.com/about). It was founded in 1961 and you can find anything about martial arts in it. Lee was by the way the first person who was introduced to the martial arts hall of fame back in 1999 (http://www.martialartsmuseum.com/magazine/magazineindex.htm). Is this maybe something for the "Award and Honours" section? Niten Doraku (talk) 12:43, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
- Frankly, I am not a great expert in martial arts, and it might be best to discuss such issues at Talk:Bruce Lee (general approach). I've heard about Black Belt magazine, but I wonder how do they rate him as a martial artist if he didn't compete against others? Note that Time rated him as "influential person". I've heard also that in China, Jet Li was ranked much higher as a martial artist. I would agree that Bruce Lee was most iconic martial art films star, but this is not up to Black Belt magazine to rate, isn't? Materialscientist (talk) 13:01, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your open mind, it´s very fair from you to say: "...i am not a expert in martial arts"! I could write a roman, but i try to explain it in a short distance: To be a Legend in Martial Arts doesn´t mean to be a Legend in Combat sport. To be a Legend in combat sport fighting you need to fight in competitions, win trophys and titles. Combat sport fighting Legends are Sugar Ray Robinson in Boxing, Anderson Silva and Bas Rutten in MMA or Semmy Schilt in K-1. Martial Arts Legends are people like Lee, Ueshiba Morihei, Kano Jigoro, Yip Man, Mas Oyama or Wong Fei Hung. They created new styles, changed the philosophy and knowledge about martial arts, were great thinkers and teachers as well. "Martial Art Legend" and "Fighting/Combat sport Legend" is not the same. An Example: A 16 part martial art / combat sport documentary named Human Weapon, produced 2007 by the History Channel (one of the host´s is MMA fighter Jason Chambers), considers Lee as "arguably the greatest martial artist of his time - or any other." But: Nobody talks about him being a Fighting Legend. The same with Karate Legend Joe Lewis (martial artist), who states: "Lee is the leading candidate for being the greatest martial artist of all time, but this doesn´t make him a fighter." To Jet Li and Bruce Lee: Jet fought in a non contact Wu Shu competition, Bruce - like his master Wong Shun Leung - in so called "Beimo" (Street) fights, created a new style (JKD is more a concept at all) and was a teacher as well. So it´s like this: Martial Arts: -> Bruce over Jet; Combat Sport: -> Jet over Bruce; Fight without rules: anyone can have his opinion. Black Belt for example is one of the few magazines which is respected in the world of martial arts and combat sport as well. Have a nice day. Best regards. PS: I am off for the next 20 hours, so a possible answer will not come within the next hours. Niten Doraku (talk) 15:37, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Names in Macau and hyphenation
[edit]Hi, I have noticed how you have moved some names of individuals from Macau to include hyphenation (e.g., Ho Iat Seng --> Ho Iat-seng). However, note that names are not typically hyphenated in Macau (see https://www.gcs.gov.mo/detail/en/G20DCpw6Z4, https://www.dsedt.gov.mo/en_US/web/public/pg_cu_adr, https://macaudailytimes.com.mo/elections-2021-ng-kuok-cheong-si-ka-lon-submit-candidate-lists.html for example); I have reverted the moves of two articles (Ho Iat Seng and Cheong Weng Chon) as it seems to be improper to include hyphenation when hyphenation is not included in Macau names. - @WikiEditor50Hi. No problem. I know many people in Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore still seperate their first name in two seperate names, but i thought since politican's like Jasper Tsang etc. from Hong Kong are spelled here on Wiki with hyphenation, i thought it is the less confusing method for western people. And i took the advice from this Wiki article how chinese names should be spelled: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_given_name Proper use of pinyin romanization means treating a Chinese given name as a single word with no space between the letters of the two characters: for example, the common name 王秀英 is properly rendered either with its tone marks as Wáng Xiùyīng or without as Wang Xiuying, but should not be written as Wang Xiu Ying, Wang XiuYing, Wangxiuying, &c. The earlier Wade-Giles system accomplished the same effect by hyphenating the given name between the characters: for example, the same name would be written as Wang2 Hsiù4-Yīng1. However, many Chinese do not follow these rules, romanizing their names with a space between each. This can cause non–Chinese-speakers to incorrectly take the names as divisible. And there are media sources like the South China Morning post who hyphenate his name: https://www.scmp.com/news/asia/article/3024253/ho-iat-seng-will-be-new-leader-macau-chinas-gambling-hub Cheers Alleingänger (talk) 00:11, 13 March 2023 (UTC)
