Happy First Edit Day!

Some bubble tea for you!

It's very kind of you! Thanks for granting IPBE. Zin Win Hlaing (talk) 03:43, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

An article you may be interested in, Jessi Slaughter cyberbullying case, has just been undeleted. Any help you could give to this, included BLP-related edits, would be very much appreciated. --Bangalamania (talk) 11:36, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Una-Minh Kavanagh

Just a heads up that I moved the page back to its original namespace on the grounds of WP:IMOS and WP:COMMONNAME, specifically the fact that it is the name she herself commonly uses on her social media as I have provided at the articles talk page. As you are an administrator I would have expected a more thorough reasoning or bit of research to have done and provided before making such a page move based on the edits and edit summary of one editor who has issues about "colonial" names. Happy Adminship Anniversary!

Friendly request

I know it's hard to remember every jot and tittle of the rules and I understand that, but as an admin could you please take a leadership role by not making edits like this, thanks. As you know, you can't make statements like that without including an immediately proximate ref. Yes I know looking up and putting in refs is a hassle, but you could have avoided that by just saying "other guy" or something, which would have made your point just as well. I don't like the guy either, but... It's hard enough as it is trying to deal with this problem (which is kind of widespread), so, thanking you for your consideration. Uaneen Fitzsimons

Alison, I noticed you linked Uaneen Fitzsimons from your todo list. I created the page today, her 50th birthday. -- c36b9 (talk) 21:27, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Thank you - that's very kind. I've been meaning to do this for some time, as I remember when it happened and it's something I've never forgotten - Alison 04:16, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Oversight query

Hi Alison. I'm about to revert an edit on Colm O'Gorman and request oversight, and I notice on the page history, you had oversighted (oversat?) some edits recently enough on that article. Would you recall, were they the same ones? BastunĖġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! 21:41, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Hi Bastun - I revdel'd those previous edits. They're not exactly the same, but were also unsourced WP:BLP vios, and definitely couldn't be allowed stand. For some reason, Mr. O'Gorman seems to be a target for some ire right now - Alison 04:15, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Lost mail

I have an alert saying that Alison has an email for me, and that alert is two months old, I just noticed it. I cannot find the said email. I am curious. where is it? what is it? Regards, Clem aka Lugnad Lugnad (talk) 22:35, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

  • Hi Clem - not to worry at all :) Great to hear from you. It was basically a request for information on the so-called "Dennis Detector", designed by Colonel Meade James Crosbie Dennis and used for detecting submarines underwater (allegedly, it was a rotary crystal radio detector), and I believe this was at the Maritime Museum at one point. I'm treasurer of the Saratoga Amateur Radio Association, and was working on an hour-long talk on the history of Irish radio. Let me know if you would like a copy and I'll mail on a pdf. Lots of obscure Irish radio history in there, including the Kingstown Regatta radio experiments - Alison 04:18, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

The Wikimedia LGBTQ+ User Group is holding online working days in May. As a member of WikiProject LGBT studies, editing on LGBTQ+ issues or if you identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, come help us set goals, develop our organisation and structures, consider how to respond to issues faced by Queer editors, and plan for the next 12 months.

We will be meeting online for 3 half-days, 14–16 May at 1400–1730 UTC. While our working language is English, we are looking to accommodate users who would prefer to participate in other languages, including translation facilities.

RfA from 2008 still fully protected?

Noticed that Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Ryan was still in Category:Wikipedia fully-protected project pages despite ending more than a decade ago. What's up with that? jp×g 05:32, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Old message

Hello, Alison,

I was deleting a broken redirect of a page from a former username of yours and it led me to User talk:Alison/sandbox. There's an old message on this page I thought you might never have seen. I'm sure it's not relevant any more but I thought I'd bring it to your attention in case you wanted to delete it. Liz Read! Talk! 21:18, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

On an unrelated but similar note, I've been working through a list of 1000+ orphaned talk subpages and I'm finding some really strange stuff that was stowed away on these pages. The articles were deleted but the deletion tools apparently don't delete talk subpages. It's amazing how much lengthy discussion went on and on about some articles that were later deleted years later at AfD. Kind of puts things in perspective about spending time writing walls-of-text that might be deleted by the next generation of admins. Liz Read! Talk! 21:55, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
Indeed. There's a lot of history in some pages like that, which document the history of Wikipedia over the now almost-20 years. Hard to believe. And yes, the earlier delete tools didn't give you the "hey - subpages" warning :) - Alison 21:59, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

  • I couldn't imagine a worse time for this to happen, given his memorial service is literally today. Good grief already. And I'm traveling internationally so am offline - Alison 11:28, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
    • I would like to extend my most sincere condolences to you, and to all the people who were close to Peter Freeman and gathered yesterday for his memorial service. Let me assure you that, when I nominated the wikipedia article about the deceased for deletion, I meant no disrespect. I did not know him, nor that his memorial service was yesterday. I apologize for interrupting your moment of mourning with the template notification yesterday. Sincerely, Mottezen (talk) 04:50, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Talk:Sol Trujillo

Hi, I am checking some older talk page protections and I'm sorry if you already recieved a confusing notification some time ago. In your case this is about Talk:Sol Trujillo. If you decide to reduce the protection I will notice, otherwise please just let me know that the matter was already considered, here or at User talk:176.247.159.174, where I am keeping a more stable list. The page was moved and there is a link to [1], which may help recalling some memories (looks like a legal matter, not sure how much it applies to the talk page). Thanks. 176.247.140.144 (talk) 18:52, 22 October 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Checkuser statistics

Dear Alison,

I'm sorry to bother you on the holidays, but I have a question to ask.

Is there any data publicly available about how many SPI investigations are opened annually, and how many result in confirmation? I've searched the web but could only find secondary sources that give uncited figures for certain years.

For example, a quote from Case Study of Sockpuppet Detection on Wikipedia":

"Sockpuppets are a prevalent problem in Wikipedia, there were close to 2,700 unique suspected cases reported in 2012. "

This is helpful, but I can't find any facts on the number of sockpuppets investigated/confirmed for 2014, 2018, or 2020, etc.

Are these statistics even formally collected and disseminated? If so I would greatly appreciate knowing where to find them. Thanks for your time.

By the way, I am aware of this SPI archive, but it dates back to the 2000s and seems inactive, and not very quantitative. To clarify, I'm looking for more recent figures, rather than a list of cases.

Thanks for your time. Hunan201p (talk) 15:41, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
