@AleatoryPonderings: sorry I haven't been able to get to this; will try later today. The Dark Fantastic talks about a different subject – black characters in the series such as Angelina Johnson, and POC fans. It questions how black wizards ended up in Britain, with British surnames, because that would imply there was slavery in the past; but why would black wizards allow themselves to be enslaved by Muggles? Interesting questions, and Thomas attempts to answer them; she also talks about fan fiction, and about a black actor portraying Hermione in a recent Harry Potter play. @Olivaw-Daneel: Yes, that sounds quite different. Most of the criticism I found ended up being about the "blood" issue, with ancillary gestures towards race in the real world. Essentially the message was: although there is apparent real-world racial diversity in HP, the real divides are between (a) wizards and Muggles; and (b) purebloods, half-bloods, Muggle-born, etc. There must be more written about race but I haven't seen the same depth about that as about the blood purity issue.
