Username concern

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "MLLP2021", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because organizations are prohibited from having accounts on Wikipedia, and your username represents an organization, not an individual person.. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you. ~Anachronist (talk) 15:29, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mandatory paid editing disclosure

[edit]
Information icon

Hello MLLP2021. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are very strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are extremely strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:MLLP2021. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=MLLP2021|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. ~Anachronist (talk) 15:29, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Paid Editing Disclosure: I am a paid employee of Milbank LLP and will be periodically updating the Milbank LLP Wikipedia page. All edits will be accompanied by third-party/published references. I understand guidelines and will post all future edits on the talkpage for inclusion by others.

Blocked

[edit]

OK, because you have chosen to ignore the notices above and continued editing anyway:

Stop icon
You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for undisclosed paid editing and violation of username policy. It is surprising that someone associated with a law firm would deliberately ignore a legal obligation to disclose your paid editing status, which you explicitly agreed to abide by when you created this account.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  ~Anachronist (talk) 16:27, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User has been renamed. This does not address the undisclosed paid editing, but the username issue is now resolved. --Yamla (talk) 11:48, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

I am a Milbank employee. I am trying to update our London address (we moved last week). Thank you.

Decline reason:

Please review WP:COI and WP:PAID and tell us how your future edits will be consistent with those policies, and tell any other subjects you might edit about as a general contributor. I am declining your request. 331dot (talk) 19:03, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:

I am a Milbank employee. We would like to update our address on wikipedia. Can I be unblocked for this purpose? Thank you.AlbertG2021 (talk) 14:18, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

This does not convince me you have reviewed WP:COI and WP:PAID and does not explain how your future edits would be consistent with those policies. Yamla (talk) 14:20, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

(on hold for Yamla) I have read the COI and paid contribution disclosures. I am disclosing that I am a paid Milbank employee. My responsibilities include keeping our public information up-to-date and factual. My previous edits to the Milbank Wikipedia page have been accompanied by third-party references (e.g., published articles). The change I would like to make now (an address change) will also include a reference link to a verifiable news story. My role and relationship with Milbank will not bias my edits. Thank you. Decline reason:

Procedural decline due to new unblock request below, which is accepted. ~Anachronist (talk) 19:43, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AlbertG2021. Some steps you need to take to get this account unblocked:

  • Follow the "How to disclose" steps in this policy. This includes posting details on your user page of what organisation(s) is paying you and for what edits.
  • Indicate your understanding of this guideline which strongly discourages you from directly editing an article for which you have a conflict of interest, and suggests that instead you post factual recommendations on that article's talkpage for inclusion by others.

If you can do the above we can seek input from the blocking admin (who I've pinged to bring this to their attention). If they support an unblock we can move on from there. Apologies if this all seems like hard work, but the Wikipedia community is generally opposed to paid editing, and in particular undisclosed paid editing as occurred with this account. -- Euryalus (talk) 09:50, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I am following up on my request to be unblocked. I have read the COI and paid contribution disclosures. I am disclosing that I am a paid Milbank employee. My goal is to keep Milbank's public information up-to-date and factual. I will submit any future requests for edits via the 'talk' page. The change I would like to make now (an address change) will include a reference link to a verifiable news story. Thank you.

Accept reason:

You are unblocked. Thank you for expressing your understanding of your role as a paid editor here. ~Anachronist (talk) 19:43, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@331dot: Thanks for pinging me. Yes, I should have been named in the hold template instead of Yamla.
AlbertG2021: Do you understand that as a Milbank employee, you cannot make substantive edits to the article about your employer? It is fine to make minor corrections to spelling, grammar, personnel, addresses, and so forth. You can also remove obvious vandalism and add citations to reliable sources that are independent of Milbank. However, understand that anything more substantive requires you to propose a change on the article's talk page. Do you agree to that? ~Anachronist (talk) 16:22, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Yes, I do understand that as a Milbank employee I can make only minor corrections to the page. For more substantive changes, I will propose edits on the article's talk page. Thanks again.
