Semiprotection of The Amazing Race 18
Your protection length isn't quite long enough to deal with what might happen with vandalism this evening. The program does not air until 8 pm EST and lasts for 2 hours, and your protection does not quite cover up until that time.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 18:00, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
- I've modified it to last until the end of the show (2:00 9 May 2011 UTC). Airplaneman ✈ 18:08, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
- It appears that the show is being delayed due to a golf game. Could you extend the semiprotection to midnight EST?—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 22:17, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
- It began on time for me here on the east coast - if the vandalism ramps up after the expiry, let me know. Airplaneman ✈ 00:25, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Polar Bear article
Hey sir, I've heard that you're the one that normally protects that page. Last night, I asked for unprotection and it got declined. The administrator who declined said to talk to you. I personally don't think that there's been enough blocks to ask for indefinite protection yet. As of right now, it's been protected for 6 months and I'm asking for you to unprotect it. Golfcourseairhorn (talk) 04:34, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hello,
- I'm not convinced that this article is gonna be ok if unprotected. As evidenced by the extensive protection logs on the page, vandalism has been chronic for a very long time. Protection has largely eradicated this issue, but it is sure to return if unprotected (as the logs show). It has been protected over a dozen times, and I do think that's enough to back up a long term protection. Airplaneman ✈ 13:50, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
Seems we were mashing different buttons at the same time. All the recent Ips were coming from the smae small rnage, so I blocked it. the semi probably isn't necessary now. Btw, I'd appreciate a hand with the RfPP backlog if you want to work down from the top an meet me in the middle (if you have time). - Ah; good call on that. I should learn how to administer rangeblocks... Airplaneman ✈ 14:14, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- It's quite simple, really. There's a rangeblock claculator and a tool for finding contributions for an entire range on User:HJ Mitchell/Sources. The smaller the number after the "/", the bigger the range. The software won't allow us to block anything bigger than a /16 because then we're into blocks of entire countries or big ISPs and thousnads of potential editors, but the range contribs tool will tell you if there are good-faith IPs on the same range. Then you bring the hammer down in the same way as you do for a normal IP block. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:38, 13 May 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks; I'll look into it! Airplaneman ✈ 23:35, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Lady Gaga
Hey Airplane man. I was wondering if I could change the Gaga picture while she's performing at the Monster Ball? Since it is protected, I'm asking for your permission. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Metroidp2 (talk • contribs) 15:37, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
- Hi metroid, is this the file you're talking about? I don't think it's protected; you can't change it on Wikipedia because that's not where the file is at. It's hosted on Wikimedia Commons. I think you can change the description of the file (but not the file itself) at commons. What did you want to change anyways? Or did I misunderstand and you actually want to change the image on her actual article? If so, you should be able to because the article is only semiprotected and you can bypass that lock because you have enough edits and have been here long enough. But if you want to change the image, it'd be best to discuss it at Talk:Lady Gaga first. Airplaneman ✈ 23:38, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi! This is the last call for signing on for a Wikipedia Ambassador hooded sweatshirt (in case you missed the earlier message in one of the program newsletters about it). If you would like one, please email me with your name, mailing address, and (US) sweatshirt size. We have a limited number left, so it will be first-come, first-served. Airbus A330 FAC
Hi Airplaneman, I'm wondering if my guess is correct or not, but you seem interested in aviation. Therefore, I'm asking if you could chip in at the Airbus A330 FAC at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Airbus A330/archive3, although you seem to prefer planes made on the West side of the Atlantic, rather than the East. Whatever the case, please indicate whether you're willing to participate in this discussion or not. Thanks in advance Sp33dyphil Ready • to • Rumble 12:00, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Article of the month – 2011 Subway Fresh Fit 500
The 2011 Subway Fresh Fit 500 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race held on February 27, 2011 at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. Contested over 312 laps, it was the second race of the 2011 season. The race was won by Jeff Gordon for the Hendrick Motorsports team. Kyle Busch finished second, and Jimmie Johnson clinched third. Pole position driver Carl Edwards maintained his lead on the first lap to begin the race, as Kurt Busch, who started in the second position on the grid, remained behind him. On the 29th lap, the first caution was given because of debris. Forty-eight laps later, a multiple car accident occurred, which involved 13 drivers. Afterward, several lead changes, and four more cautions occurred. With nine laps remaining, Gordon passed Kyle Busch for the first position. Gordon maintained the lead to win his first race of the season, and his first in more than 60 races. There were eight cautions and 29 lead changes among 12 different drivers throughout the course of the race, Gordon's first win of the season. The result moved Gordon to the sixth position in the Drivers' Championship. He remained 15 points behind first place driver Kyle Busch and one ahead of Bobby Labonte in seventh. In the Manufacturers' Championship, Toyota, Ford and Chevrolet had twelve points, four points ahead of Dodge. A total of 75,000 people attended the race, while 10.36 million watched it on television. WikiCup 2011 May newsletter
We're half way through round 3 of the 2011 WikiCup. There are currently 32 remaining in the competition, but only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Casliber (submissions), of pool D, is our overall leader with nearly 200 points, while pools A, B and C are led by Racepacket (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Canada Hky (submissions) respectively. The score required to reach the next round is 35, though this will no doubt go up significantly as the round progresses. We have a good number of high scorers, but also a considerable number who are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. Also, an important note concerning nominations at featured article candidates: if you are nominating content for which you intend to claim WikiCup points, please make this clear in the nomination statement so that the FAC director and his delegates are aware of the fact.
A running total of claims can be seen here. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! Hi Airplaneman!
Do you have admin rights? If so, I need your help in banning a anonymous user. He's been vandalizing the Sprint Cup Series page with false information, and he makes a bunch of small edits to force non-admin editors to go in and manually revert his edits. Even then he gets back on and vandalizes the pages. Could you do something about this? ThanksGaeaman787 (talk) 18:23, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Article of the month – 2010 Toyota/Save Mart 350, a good article.
The 2010 Toyota/Save Mart 350 was a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stock car race held on June 20, 2010 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California. Contested over 110 laps, it was the sixteenth race of the 2010 Sprint Cup Series season and the first of two road course competitions on the schedule. The race was won by Jimmie Johnson, for the Hendrick Motorsports team. Robby Gordon finished second, and Kevin Harvick, who started fourth, clinched third. Conditions were sunny at the start of the race, making the track potentially slippery. Pole position driver Kasey Kahne maintained his lead into the first corner, but Johnson, who had started in the second position on the grid, took the lead before the first lap was over. Kahne suffered an ill-handling car during the beginning of the race, causing him to fall to seventh by the sixth lap. Seven laps before the finish, race leader Marcos Ambrose, turned his car off to try to save fuel, but he could not refire the engine and subsequently stalled. He dropped back from the lead to sixth place with seven laps remaining, allowing Kahne to finish fourth and Jeff Gordon fifth. There were eight cautions and twelve lead changes among eight different drivers throughout the course of the race, Johnson's fourth win of the season and his first ever at Infineon. The result moved him up four spots to second in the Drivers' Championship, 140 points behind of leader Kevin Harvick and one ahead of Kyle Busch. Chevrolet maintained its lead in the Manufacturers' Championship, nine points ahead of Toyota and forty-three ahead of Dodge, with twenty races remaining in the season. WikiCup 2011 June newsletter
We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.
No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.
We would again like to thank Jarry1250 (submissions) and Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please do keep using it, and please do help by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.
Two final notes: Firstly, please remember to state your participation in the WikiCup when nominating articles at FAC. Finally, some WikiCup-related statistics can be seen here and here, for those interested, though it appears that neither are completely accurate at this time. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn and The ed17 23:25, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
GOCE drive invitation
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors
The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". |

Completely new abortion proposal and mediation
In light of the seemingly endless disputes over their respective titles, a neutral mediator has crafted a proposal to rename the two major abortion articles (pro-life/anti-abortion movement, and pro-choice/abortion rights movement) to completely new names. The idea, which is located here, is currently open for opinions. As you have been a contributor in the past to at least one of the articles, your thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.
The hope is that, if a consensus can be reached on the article titles, the energy that has been spent debating the titles of the articles here and here can be better spent giving both articles some much needed improvement to their content. Please take some time to read the proposal and weigh in on the matter. Even if your opinion is simple indifference, that opinion would be valuable to have posted.
To avoid concerns that this notice might violate WP:CANVASS, this posting is being made to every non-anon editor who has edited either page (or either page's respective talk page) since 1 July 2010, irrespective of possible previous participation at the mediation page.
