Copyrights

[edit]

Hi, I received a notification that you took content from this website. While this website does have a Creative Commons license, it's one that isn't compatible for Wikipedia. The reason is that the license ( Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License) is one that does not allow people to use the content commercially nor does it allow people to alter or build upon the content. This is an issue because Wikipedia has a CC BY-SA 4.0 license, which means that people can do pretty much anything they want with the material - even sell it, if they so choose. They can also alter the material in any format they like, meaning that if they wanted to copy this page to their website and change the material dramatically in order to make the content read in a different light, they can do that as well.

The reason this matters is because the database's copyright forbids someone from selling the material or changing anything, which isn't compatible with Wikipedia's license that allows people to sell the material and change whatever they want.

This is something that can be a little difficult to suss out at first, as legalese can be difficult to really understand. The best thing I can recommend is that you should re-write the material in your own words whenever you look to add something. Not only will this help avoid issues with copyright statuses, but it can also sometimes make things easier to read and more closely fit overall guidelines, as content posted in other places may be written in a more complicated format and be written in a non-neutral tone. Hello, I am confused on what the problem is? Can you explain in more detail what happened? I wrote my edits using the Nonviolent Database website, but I did not mean to copy any material directly. If I did use the material directly I cited the Database every time. I am asking for more clarification. Thank you. Afuegs (talk) 19:51, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
