Welcome to Wikipedia!

[edit]

Hello AdelaMae/Archive1, welcome to Wikipedia!

If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.

If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks and happy editing, JoanneB 06:47, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Help request

[edit]

Contact an admin right away. I recommend User:android79. He's very knowledgable and will help you deal with this guy. I had someone make personal threats against me and he helped me.Gator(talk) 13:24, 3 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm processing your request right now as I write this. I will e-mail you afterwards, so please remember to check your inbox at your convenience. --HappyCamper 01:13, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Greek Recon

[edit]

Hello -

I saw your Request for Assistance and read your excellent critique of Greek Reconstructionism. THANK YOU for taking the time to contribute! I filed a request for informal mediation here and would appreciate your feedback. Please hang in there! I don't know who this paranoid malicious person is, but don't give up.

Thanks again! Cyberdenizen 23:11, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greek reconstructionism

[edit]

Hi there! I see that there's a lot of activity on that page now. What are your feelings on the article's progress? (I'm also asking Cyberdenizen this question too.) --HappyCamper 02:56, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment about POV title -- I moved it to this title, it was originally at Dog Meat, which I felt was not intuitive. I have no problem with changing the name. Do you have a better title? User:Zoe|(talk) 03:46, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you that the article was extremely biased, and I don't have a problem with the redirect. User:Zoe|(talk) 00:22, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Merging Greek Recon into Hellenic Polytheism

[edit]

Adelamae, after seeing the caliber of the Hellenic_polytheism entry, I have no problem with merging Greek Reconstructionism into it. As long as reconstructionism is explained as a methodology and is explicitly differentiated from neo-paganism. Also, the indigenous /ethnic /ancestor veneration components represented in Greece should be detailed without Americanized biases and it would probably be wise to document the disagreements over syncretism so it doesn't become an issue later when the past editors reappear and start fiddling. If someone emerges who feels more strongly about the matter than I do, the entry can be resurrected. Let me know what you think. Good job! Cyberdenizen 20:17, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Question about wording in Paul Mirecki

[edit]

AdelaMae, you were absolutely right with your comment about "last person" I have changed it to "one of the most recent persons". Logophile 11:17, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the Idea

[edit]

AdelaMae,

I really like your idea. Maybe it is something you can assist me with. Anyway, thanks so much. I really know you care due to the research you've done. That means you are sincere and trustworthy. That goes a long way with most Native Americans.

Flexitarianism

[edit]

I have wondered for a few years whether there was a term for that range (heh... inadvertent pun) of food consumption choices. Sehr interessant! → P.MacUidhir (t) (c) 17:24, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Requested translations-part 1 (Tertullian, De corona militis, ch.11)

[edit]

Latin: "Apud hunc tam miles est paganus fidelis quam paganus est miles fidelis."

English: In (the view of / His eyes / His view) ['God'- (deo, deus, dei, et cetera) is not part of the passage, but the context strongly implies that Tertullian is speaking as God’s proxy here. ;) ], the believer [person of faith, person who is extremely steadfast and reliable (as a Christian in this case)] who is a soldier ['of Christ'... again, implied but not written] is as much a soldier ['of Christ'] as a believer [steadfast and reliable Christian].

So, to put it in more modern phrasing, "The way God sees it, whether you fight for him or die for him, it is all the same, and you are just as much of a Christian no matter which option you choose." Just my own take on it, mind you, bearing in mind that I was 1.) raised in an arch-conservative RC household, with the usual Catholic school indoctrination, but am now sitting behind a very different reconstructionist neo-pagan POV. Biases are important in interpretation. ;)

Tertullian's writings are not particularly familiar to me (a bit on the edge of what I usually deal with, as you can probably figure), but after thinking about it for a little while, he seems to be thinking of 2 Timothy and Hebrews 11. Those two, at least, are the ones that came to mind when I parsed through De corona militis, chs. 10, 11, and 12 in the Latin edition.

Native American Spirituality

[edit]

I just wanted you too know that I've started working on the Native American Spirituality entry. It is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_Spirituality.

--Bumpusmills1 22:40, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you AdelaMae. I deleted the other stuff due to the unpleasant nature in some of it. I'm learning as I'm new to wikipedia. I am so very biased on certain issue's it is hard for me to back off. I suppose it shows that I'm merely an unperfected human. --Bumpusmills1 22:46, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Atheos

[edit]

It's Greek. It means "no god" and is the etymological root of the word atheist. I couldn't find a suitable image and "ath" is too bland. Daykart 10:59, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. Can you recommend an image to go in that template? Daykart 11:18, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I like the flexitarian template. I have it proudly displayed along with about 200 others. BTW, the original Greek term for atheist was atheos. Daykart 01:45, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Pentagram

[edit]

Actually, it is a pentacle, not a pentagram. It is a "pentagram (circumscribed)," yes, though I think this is still less than the whole truth. A pentagram would just be the five pointed star. A pentacle is a pentagram inside a circle. Would love to hear your reasoning, however. Search4Lancer 09:54, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I notice you recently commented on the userboxes WikiProject (thanks!). May I ask you to consider joining our project, since members will encurage other members, which will make the whole project run smoother. Ian13ID:540053 19:37, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Facebook

[edit]

Hi, my apologies I saw that duplication later, and wasn't sure where it was most appropriate. You seem to be doing a lot on this entry, so you can delete or incorporate it as you please. I was a former undergrad there years ago and remember the print version of the book being called "The Face Book", but today I read the entry for 'facebook' (not 'thefacebook') and according to that article, I learned that many such beginning-of-the-year student directories are similarly named elsewhere at (some/many?) other colleges, and may not necessarily be identifying to the website's origin at harvard college. Niceness

[edit]

That was a very nice note you left at User talk:Bumpusmills1. You did a great job of presenting the issues in a neutral and constructive manner. Many new editors arrive with rough edges but become contributing members of the community, especially when they have an under-represented expertise or POV. In the future I may draw upon your clear distinction between an encyclopedia and a blog. Thanks for being nice. Cheers, -Willmcw 09:21, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I thought so too. Very well put. Thanks! FreplySpang (talk) 15:35, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
      • AdelaMae please look at my Userpage and Talkpage. I have calmed down and attempting to contain myself. Thank you for being the fine person that you are and for assisting me to learn here. I only wish that others would assist me in a nicer way. Being in-your-face with me only gets retaliation. You obviously have psychological training of some sort or you're just a natural communicator. Thanks and Wado (Thank You in Cherokee). --Bumpusmills1 22:23, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

      • AdelaMae I've decided to stay after all. I've moved/changed the name to Cherokee Society. Some where having fits because it was focusing on the Cherokee. They could not or would not understand that I was taking one of number tribes and was going to focus on other tribes as the article progressed. Now I suppose I'll have to do an article on each tribe I was planning to include. --Bumpusmills1 22:21, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bumpusmills1 (talk · contribs), after saying that he had left the Wiki forever, has come back to edit "his" article. He removed all previous talk form the talk page and moved the article to "Cherokee society". He has left comments on various pages (inlcuding the talk page of the article adn his user page) insisting that anyone who wants to edit "his" article must talk to him first. I have previously presented Bumpus with information about Wikipedia policy on article ownership, which he hasn't followed. I agree that there should be more on Native American issues on the Wikipedia, but I have no expertise on this. I don't know if the content that he edits is accurate, but I know that his methods are brusk. I have been reprimanded by him multiple times to back off and leave his article alone. What are your thoughts? -Scm83x 23:35, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I received messages desiring me too stay. I know you've worked many hours on the articles you've placed here, haven't you? How would you like somebody too go in and mess them up and then you log onto it and see that all of your hard work was gone? You would not like it. If you say that you wouldn't mind, I'll say you are telling a falsehood to all of us and yourself. Since you admitted not knowing about Native American topics, then why don't you leave it alone. I am a 60% Native American and I have been a historian for nearly 30 years. I don't have to prove this too you or anyone else for that matter. In my community I'm well known for being a historian/genealogist. Besides who died and left you boss for the minute? Hey?
Anyone, including me, can change my mind. You've never changed your mind, I suppose. Yeah, right. I don't know why you're asking AdelaMae for advice. You'll do what you desire too do anyway.
--Bumpusmills1 00:13, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for coming to the page and taking a look at the article and surrounding issues. As you properly determined, I have been trying to make the article conform to WP:MoS. Again, I think the problem has become one of article ownership. I'm not sure what other comments to make really. -Scm83x 01:35, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From Fight Club:

Narrator (Edward Norton as "Jack"): Was it ticking?
Airport Security Officer: Actually throwers don't worry about ticking 'cause modern bombs don't tick.
Narrator: Sorry, throwers?
A.S.O.: Baggage handlers. But, when a suitcase vibrates, then the throwers gotta call the police.
Narrator: My suitcase was vibrating?
A.S.O.: Nine times out of ten it's an electric razor, but every once in a while, it's a dildo. Of course it's company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a dildo — always use the indefinite article "a dildo", never "your dildo".
Narrator: But I don't own...

FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 22:46, Jan. 7, 2006

Aha! Still not a very easily recognizable quote, though. The "a dildo, never your dildo" part is the bit that's funny, so if you leave that out, people are never going to remember. - AdelaMae (talk - contribs) 22:50, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
