- Please could you explain why I've been blocked. As I can truthfull tell I've been blocked for two days now. When attempting yesterday to edit a page it said my IP was blocked and with my sister having an account I though she just had gotten the IP an 24 hour block but when attempting to edit the page today after creating a username for myself it still said I was blocked but now indefinently. I've done my fair sare of editting and helping but now with the blocking of my IP I'm wondering was it me, my sister or was it a mistake.
- My account is Acerima
Hi, sorry if the block has caused a problem. IPs are not usually blocked indefinitely unless they are open proxies, which I doubt is the case here. Are you using a shared IP (one used by many computers)? If so, the block may have been in response to someone else's edits.
In order to find the reason for the block, I need to know the full text of the block message you recieve. Also, is this the username you were using when you recieved the indefinite block message? If not, what username were you using? Thanks – Gurch 18:14, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

- Your user name or IP address has been blocked from editing.
- You were blocked by Gurch for the following reason (see our blocking policy):
- Autoblocked because your IP address has been recently used by "Wikopediaescommulismon Vheels". The reason given for Wikopediaescommulismon Vheels's block is: "username".
- Your IP address is 64.12.117.13.
- thats what I find when I try to edit. Yeah my IP adress is shared I believe seeing as it sometimes changes I believe seeing as I use AOL. Don't know who this Vheels is though.
Thanks for the info. What happened was the IP address 64.12.117.13 (talk • contribs) was used by the user Wikopediaescommulismon Vheels (talk • contribs). I blocked this user indefinitely becuase their username was inappropriate. The name is a parody of two particularly notorious vandals, both of whom have been banned from editing – Wikipedia is Communism (talk • contribs) and Willy on Wheels (talk • contribs).
If a blocked user attempts to edit while blocked, the IP address that the user is using at the time is blocked automatically, to prevent the user from immediately logging out and/or creating a user account and continuing to edit. This is called an "autoblock", and administrators have no control over whether it is applied, though they can reverse it once it is in effect. Unfortunately this causes problems for people such as yourself who are using AOL or another ISP that assigns the same IP to different users at different times. At the moment, registered users cannot edit from a blocked IP even if their username isn't blocked – the MediaWiki software that powers Wikipedia is currently being worked on to fix this.
I have now unblocked the IP (see the block log for 64.12.117.13) so it should be able to edit. Be aware that it may be autoblocked again if it is used by another blocked user. If this happens, contact the blocking administrator for assistance. It might also be blocked directly if an anonymous user uses it to vandalise. In this case it's probably just best to wait for the block to expire – direct blocks to AOL IPs are usually only for around 15 minutes because of the above problems.
