- No, no, the one who's fast is Alison; I remember that after she became an administrator, other admins edit-conflicted with her there. :) As for my protection time, I normally do a month in cases like that, but if that's considered too long a time for incidents like that page, I'll give out shorter protections in future. I rarely do protections longer than a month anyway. Acalamari 21:16, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
RFPP and Main Page FA
[edit]Hi Acalamari,
Sorry that I didn't notice this beforehand, but I unprotected Harry S. Truman while you were trying to contact Rlevse about the issue. WP:ERRORS noted a problem with the wording of the protection tag, and, seeing that we only fully protect the Main Page FA for a very short time as a last resort to clean up major messes, I went ahead and unprotected. I only noticed that you had contacted Rlevse after I notified him of my unprotection. If you or Rlevse feel that semi-protection is warranted, I won't wheel war.
In retrospect, that's the first time that I've ever seen the Main Page FA protected for more than 15 minutes, and apparently it seemed to be vexing people. Seeing that Rlevse isn't active at this moment, I think that unprotecting is the right way to go. — TKD::Talk 22:36, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- That's fine if you unprotected Harry S. Truman. Even though I know the Main Page featured article is rarely semi-protected, and even more rarely, fully-protected, I was hesitant about doing the unprotecting myself. I hoped that Rlevse was still online, which is why I went with discussion rather than undoing another administrator's action
- With the current rate of vandalism, I don't beleive semi-protection is necessary. I see no reason for me or another administrator to re-protect in any form.
- Thanks for handling the unprotection. Acalamari 22:44, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Indefinite blocks
[edit]Hey thanks for the advice..! I saw another admin do the same, so I followed suit.. thanks for pointing that out...! Dreadstar † 23:30, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- You're welcome. :) Do you remember which administrator that was? I'd better inform them if they blocked an IP indefinitely. Acalamari 23:32, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- You know, I just realized that my very first block wasn't an IP address..it was an actual newly created user name...so the person who commented on that being an indef wasn't talking bout IP addresses at all...so I misunderstood..wow..I'll be more careful of that in the future. Thanks for pointing that out! I've been trying to be very, very careful...<sigh> Dreadstar † 23:46, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- It's okay, I was extremely cautious when I first became an administrator (still am extremely cautious!), and it does take some time to get familiar with everything. Also, I suggest looking at Wikipedia: New admin school, it's highly useful; I wish I had it, that page and its subpages didn't exist when I became an admin over two months ago! :) Acalamari 23:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- The power of these extra buttons is somewhat...well, scary..! So I'm playing it really safe, and will continue to be very cautious. Luckily I only made two indef blocks to IP addresses, so I shortened them and adjusted the talk page notice accordingly. And thanks for the admin school links, cool! And thanks for being my mentor in this....a lot to learn! I have to say that although it's somewhat daunting, it's also very cool to be able to do these administrator tasks....! Dreadstar † 00:04, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, it is somewhat hard at first. It's was a shock when the bureaucrat changed my rights too; one minute, no extra buttons, I refresh a page, and they appear! Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it all soon enough. :) Acalamari 00:10, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Overlinking vandal
[edit]I have noticed that you have dealt with the overlinking vandal for a long time. I've tried page protection, but that isn't a feasible option on the long term, and runs the risk of the vandal moving to new articles unnoticed. So I am coming to you know to see what you would think of a month long range block of 216.76.248.xxx. It seems like all of the IPs come from this range, and I haven't seen any productive edits from the same range. Uninvolved new users affected by the range block can always request an account or an unblock. At a time I thought this was a little drastic, but the page histories of these articles have been destroyed by this user, and they sure are persistent and haven't gone away after months. What do you think? I'm copying this message to User:CambridgeBayWeather as well.-Andrew c [talk] 22:33, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

RE: Temporary Wikipedian userpages
[edit]Hello, I noticed in this edit you placed a "user is blocked" template on the user page after I had already deleted the user page. Well, just so you know, you don't have to place an {{indefblocked}} tag on a user page if the user page was a redlink to start with. You see, that template puts user pages in Category:Temporary Wikipedian userpages, and user and user talk pages listed in that category get deleted after a month or so. Acalamari 23:12, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
- I placed the {{deaththreatblock}} (an indef blocked template for users doing death threat)because that user's username refers to death threats. This offensive username has been created recently, so an indef block template might be necessary for about three weeks and then it could be deleted after a month after the block of the user. NHRHS2010 Talk 23:42, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
- That's a good explanation. However, sometimes it's best to leave the user page blank to avoid giving the disruptive user any acknowledgement other than a block. Acalamari 23:45, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Someone to watch over me
[edit]Thank you for all the reverts to my user and talk pages. I have abandon that user name because of harrassment, so I am no longer checking it for vandalism. My user page is semi-protected until December. However, my talk page is still being vandalized. If you could put it on your watchlist and revert any vandalism (and block the vandal) I would very much appreciate it. I do not want to revert it using my new user name because I want no links between the two. Also, I frankly do not want to know that I am still on the mind of this scary creep. Thanks. Cynrin 18:00, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll do that. I also have a suggestion; instead of abandoning that account with all your work and edits, you can get a username change at WP:CHU. That way, you could still keep all your edits, and be free from harassment. Acalamari 18:03, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

Jaranda's userpage
[edit]Hi Acalamari, I noticed that you protected Jaranda's userpage because there's no need for anyone else to edit it. To my understanding, sysops are able to view deleted content. Now I remember Jaranda had listed some featured articles that he wrote, but I can't remember what they were. So would it be alright if you tell me what they were? When one writes a GA/FA, it's not enough to just leave it, it usually has to be maintained from unsourced info etc. Thanks. Spellcast 23:50, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hello Spellcast, I couldn't find any articles listed on the deleted revisions of Jaranda's user page, but I did find a link to this subpage of his. That might be what you're looking for. Acalamari 00:00, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

- No, I advised that you both keep cool; I did not warn either of you for anything. As for punishments, I don't give out punishments, that's against policy; blocks are to prevent disruption, not to punish. If a user continues to be uncivil and make personal attacks, that's when blocks are issued. Indeed, some of SG's comments were out of line, and were not in the spirit of WP:CIVIL and WP:NPA, which was why I posted on their talk page regarding the issue for an explanation, and I would like an explanation. Acalamari 22:59, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

- I haven't let the matter drop; I'll be re-asking him to explain his actions if I don't receive a response soon. Acalamari 16:28, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- My reasoning is very clear in my messages to Real Compton G. If you don't see that, then you have not read the discussion on our respective talk pages. It would probably be best to reconstruct the messages on a single page page in chronological order, then it might be more perspicuous, as you'll see how the comments escalated. ♠ SG →Talk 23:13, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- I have reviewed the discussion, and yes, there were inappropriate comments from both of you. However, calling Real Compton G a "disgrace to the human race", and saying "You have progressed to the mental capacity of a four year-old", were both unacceptable; there was no need for them, despite the context they were used in. While I do not advocate gangsterism at all, I see no reason to discuss it in great detail the way you both did. I suggest you both try to stay away from each other's talk pages' in future. However, if there's something I'm still missing here, please point it out to me. Acalamari 00:16, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

- No, he should not be given any punishment at all, and you won't get one either; in fact, I haven't given any punishments to anyone, and I won't give out any: blocks are not to punish people. I have warned him regarding those comments. Even if I gave him a "{{subst:uw-npa1}}" template, I wouldn't be helping anyone. I have no reason to block this user or you, as the incident happened a couple of days ago, and if I did perform a block now, that would be abuse of my admin tools. - That's fine then. However, for future reference, blocks are issued on uncivil users if they continue to be uncivil, but since that discussion ended two or so days ago, nothing would be achieved by blocking either of you now, and in fact, it would make the situation worse, and to be honest, I don't want to make anything more difficult for anybody. [edit]Thank you for your support in my Request for Adminship, which passed with 50 supports, 1 neutral, and 1 oppose. My goal is to keep earning your trust every time I grab the "mop". PlayStation Home
[edit]I noticed that you semi-protected PlayStation Home on 16 July 2007, which seems quite a while back. Should the protection still remain? --Salix alba (talk) 18:17, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
- No; I was a new administrator back then, and gave out a few indefinite semi-protections at the time. I'll unprotect for now, though if the vandalism comes back, it can always be semi-protected again; this time with an expiry date. Acalamari 18:20, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Your username, Acalamari reminds me of one of my favorite foods (Calamari). Yum. For that reason, sometimes, your username makes me smile. NHRHS2010 Talk 00:44, 26 September 2007 (UTC) |

RE Essay
[edit]I've commented on the essay's talk page. You might also want to leave a note at WT:RFA about it, to attract further comments (I noticed you haven't done that yet). WaltonOne 10:41, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. It's okay, I didn't post it to WT:RFA yet because I wanted your opinion on it first before submitting it there. Acalamari 16:44, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]I was pleasantly surprised that you were able to provide some protection for the Alexander Graham Bell article. I am presently working this article and Amelia Earhart up to GA standard, and could also use some help there as well. Amelia seems to be on every grade school curriculum and attracts a great deal of attention from vandals as well. Thanks again. Bzuk 02:41, 24 September 2007 (UTC).
- You're welcome for the semi-protection of Alexander Graham Bell. However, after a look at the recent history of Amelia Earhart, no semi-protection is needed there for now; hardly any vandals have edited the page recently, and semi-protection is therefore not necessary. If, however, vandals hit the page the page in force, please either request semi-protection here, or at WP:RFPP if you prefer. Acalamari 03:16, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- As we speak, another vandal has hit the page. FWIW Bzuk 03:24, 24 September 2007 (UTC).
- It's only one vandal; the page still doesn't need semi-protection at this time. Acalamari 16:22, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Acalamari, today, there has been a concentrated attack by a number of vandals just as the page was being "put to bed" for a GA review after adding new photos and screening for typos and the like. Now take a look at it. FWIW, a very decidely POV submission has been entered that changes the whole focus of the disappearance sections. Bzuk 15:07, 26 September 2007 (UTC).
- Seriously, the page still doesn't require semi-protection at this point; it's just a few vandals which are easy to revert. Even if you went to WP:RFPP requesting semi-protection, it would be turned down. If it was heavy vandalism (for example, almost every edit being down to the page within a short amount of time would either be vandalism or a revert), then it would require semi-protection. At the moment, it looks like two or three IPs, which have been reverted. If I did semi-protect the page now, I would likely be questioned for it. I have, however, reverted the recent edit. Acalamari 16:37, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
- Then I would ask you (along with other sharp-eyed editors and admins) to keep an eye on this article and help keep the vandals at bay for awhile, so that the last changes can take place. FWIW Bzuk 21:23, 26 September 2007 (UTC). [:º
- I can temporarily watchlist the page; I'll do that. Acalamari 21:27, 26 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for the response. One more question: What is this edit [2]? --Ronz 22:42, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
- You're welcome for the response. :) That was to prevent the page from being moved to a different name; that's standard with all featured articles. While normal vandalism is easy to revert, move vandalism is harder, hence the move protection; also, it's the agreed upon title of the page. For more information regarding protection of the featured article, see WP:NOPRO. Acalamari 22:47, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Anna Nicole Smith question
[edit]Hi again, Acalamari! Question --- Do you feel that the Anna Nicole Smith judge, Larry Seidlin, still deserves his own article? Do you think he's still newsworthy and/or a historical figure, or do you think his "15 minutes of fame" are now up? Would a tabloid article rumor (with no official sources backing it up) that he may get a TV show make him still notable enough to have his own article or do you think he should be merged into Anna's article?--Bamadude 00:25, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- If his article is reasonably sourced and he is considered a notable figure, then his article should stay. I don't have an "opinion" on the matter though, and I don't plan to join in on the discussion on that talk page. Regarding the tabloid rumor however, if there is one on the article, it should be removed; Wikipedia is not a place to post rumors from tabloids. Acalamari 02:01, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit]The Fried calamari for Acalamari | ||
I am awarding you a Fried calamari for your hard work on your edits and getting rid of vandals (including the Kate McAuliffe vandal). I just had Fried calamari for dinner today, which made me think about you. NHRHS2010 Talk 22:49, 28 September 2007 (UTC) |
- Thanks for the award! I've blocked a few Kate McAuliffe vandal-socks, don't worry! :) Interestingly enough, I had squid last night in my dinner. Argh! Cannibalism! (Joke). :) Acalamari 23:01, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- You're welcome. I had fried calamari today for dinner that my mom made me (hence your username). Just to let you know that I go to the same school as that 'Kate McAuliffe vandal', and he often gets very annoying. Luckily, I do not see these annoying Kate McAuliffe socks these days. NHRHS2010 Talk 23:06, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- Wow, interesting coincidence, going to school with a known sockpuppeteer/vandal. Well, if you ever see him again, ask him what he knows about the "Helen Crisson socks, as I've blocked some of them as well (they're similar to the "Kate McAuliffe" socks). Acalamari 23:14, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
- It is very likely that the 'Helen Crisson' socks are created by the Kate McAuliffe vandal because I have heard him talk about some girl named Helen before. NHRHS2010 Talk 00:42, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Speedy for William Forward
[edit]The guy was on a couple of episodes of a TV show I loved, and has played other parts. These in and of themselves don't seem to me to constitute a claim of notability. Does your understanding differ? --Orange Mike 02:16, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Well, I've never created an article before then, and if I've made a mistake, feel free to take the article to AfD. I believe that his Babylon 5 role, combined with his other roles, made him notable enough for an article, even just a stub. At any rate though, if you want the article deleted, I won't mind if you take it to AfD for discussion there. Acalamari 02:22, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- He's a notable actor who has long been established for playing small roles on American television series. For actors who don't get the notable character roles it may seem they're not notable, but Forward will have plenty of off-line biographical information in the trade papers--the entertainment professional journals, as he's been working somewhat steadily in the business for 20 years. KP Botany 17:33, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification, and also for the work you just did on it! :) I made sure I asserted his notability in the first edit to the article so it wouldn't get speedied. I spent about half an hour or so doing some research on him, so at least both the Babylon 5 roles and a couple of others are mentioned. By the way, regarding Joe Meno, I've done a few small edits to it; not much just yet, but a start. I'll do some more later, don't worry; hopefully to add some content rather than to fix existing. Thanks again. :) Acalamari 17:42, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Sockpuppets
[edit]Thanks for blocking the recent Trueman31 sockpuppets, but please note that User:Ln of x is a different sockpuppet to User:Trueman31. Ln of x always mentions Abi Branning, Lorna Fitzgerald or me, whereas Trueman31 is into more random vandalism or adding false information to articles. — AnemoneProjectors (会話) 18:47, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for telling me, I didn't realize they were different socks. I just assumed from this user, this one, this sock, and this sockpuppet that they were all the same person. Thanks for clarifying. Acalamari 18:53, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, they've both used "VS AnemoneProjectors", so they could be the same, but they make distinctly different edits, and have left each other messages (though not uncommon for socks). I haven't seen any other evidence to suggest they are the same person, and I still believe they are different people. By the way, is there anything we can do to stop them coming back all the time? — AnemoneProjectors (会話) 19:05, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Hello Acalamari. Thank you for semiprotecting this page. I just wanted to let you know that the semiprotection tag that you added seems to be for a tag that is no longer available as it is sitting at the top of the page as a red link and not as the message that you meant to leave. Sorry I don't know how to fix it or I wouldn't have bothered you. Cheers and thanks again. MarnetteD | Talk 19:29, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hello, MarnetteD, thanks for telling me. :) I was typing so fast I had forgotten to put an additional "-" between the "pp" and the "semi". Thanks! :) Acalamari 19:37, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Elonka move vandal
[edit]Hi there. As a follow-up with this I've move-protected her user page and created and protected User:Elonka Dunin and User:ElonkaDunin. Hopefully no more problems. Tim Vickers 20:20, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- That's fine if you move-protected her user and talk page indefinitely, after all, they're her pages to use. :) I only move-protected them temporarily in case of any possible sleeper socks there might have been at the time. I do suggest that, with pages you created, also create matching accounts to go with those pages, and then block those accounts; that way, it'll prevent vandals and impersonators from taking advantage of those protected pages. I can do that if you like. Acalamari 22:03, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
I'll do it, I didn't realise the software would let you create an account if the user page already existed. Thanks. Tim Vickers 22:23, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Yes it does, but at any rate, once they're blocked, no one can take them. Good work. :) Acalamari 22:36, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Both blocked. Thanks for the advice. :) Tim Vickers 22:42, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello
[edit][3] - That is your opinion. But I do not think it is fair of you to dismiss the reason (Which is my opinion) I gave as "irrelevant". Whether something is relevant or not is completely subjective in itself, friend. ScarianTalk 23:26, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, I wasn't referring to anyone's opinion in particular. Also, the "irrelevant" isn't my opinion at all. You see, the "doesn't need the tools" argument has been discussed on WT:RFA many times before, and is now considered an irrelevant argument. Acalamari 23:30, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Do you have a policy, by any chance, that states that? "Considered" doesn't seem like a binding word to me. Sorry if I am bothering you with my questions, friend. ScarianTalk 23:37, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- No, there isn't actually a "policy"; you'll have to look at the archives of WT:RFA for the discussions. By the way, I do apologize if you were offended by my words on that RfA; they were not intended that way. Acalamari 23:44, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
- Nah! No worries. I'm still a little green so I'm opening up my ears to learn the tiny little intricate details of Wikipedia. In the future I will try to find solid reasons for opposing/supporting RfA's backed with policies. Thanks for your time! :-) ScarianTalk 23:48, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
