deletion
[edit]This article should be deleted. It would be ridiculous to give every shop of the IWW a Wikipedia article, and this particular faction is no more deserving of one than any other. The "IWW" article should be enough. Furthermore, the Ottawa Panhandlers Union does not have a website, the article is completely unsourced, and the group has not done anything noteworthy enough to deserve a Wikipedia article. I vote for deletion.
- First, a look at this person's contributions will reveal that he's a sockpuppet created solely for the purpose of attacking this article. He's (so far) tried speedy deletion twice, and will probably try again. Second, the existence of a union for panhandlers has been reported in newspapers all over North America, so clearly the press seems to think the union is noteable. Nor is it remarkable that the Panhandlers Union does not have a website, considering the member base it supports. The article is NOT unsourced; there are plenty of citations, as anyone capable of reading can determine for themselves. The accusations here are pretty obviously an attempt to throw a lot of mud and see what sticks. SmashTheState 11:52, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
- Wikipedia allows editing by folks who give no indication of who they are, or what their interests may be, and that's OK. But when such essentially anonymous individuals go around attacking articles created by others, offering B.S. instead of legitimate argument, and they DON'T EVEN BOTHER TO SIGN THEIR STATEMENT, i think their opinions ought to be given just a little less weight than that of the average person. No deletion. Richard Myers 03:40, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
- As panhandling is a major issue in Ottawa, especially after Ottawa's mayor's outlandish comments, this article is highly deserving of an article in the Ottawa Portal. No Deletion 70.49.133.158 00:54, 25 October 2007 (UTC) Squawking Pigeon
Despite the fact that this is pretty much a vanity article for Andrew Nellis (who has a whole section devoted to himself, despite being unworthy of an encyclopedia article), his Wikipedia ID is "SmashTheState". He participates regularly both in the editing of his own article and its deletion discussions, which is against the policy of Wikipedia. As noted before, both the "Ottawa Panhandlers Union" and Andrew Nellis are insignificant an undeserving of a Wikipedia article--giving every "shop" of the IWW its own article would be ludicrous. Additionally, there is no research, and Nellis has essentially written his own article by himself. Sources such as "anarchopedia" simply have no place in Wikipedia. While Nellis may narcissisticly believe that he is important enough to deserve an article, I imagine any sane person would realize he doesn't. Ms87 03:28, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- Stop trolling. The "Andrew Nellis" article was created by people who had a political axe to grind with me, and was deliberately libellous. When others -- who, again, had nothing to do with me -- fixed the article to make it factual, the people who had created the article then waged a bad-faith campaign to get it deleted. And succeeded, thanks to the combined cluelessness and political bias of certain Wikipedia administrators.
- The Panhandlers Union of Ottawa has received national and international media exposure, as the article itself makes clear. It is obviously noteable. And any person can look at the history of this article to see I had nothing to do with its creation, and that I have deliberately refrained from editing the article aside from defending it from vandalism from people like yourself. The comment you left on my personal page makes it clear this is some sort of personal vendetta.
- I note that this is the third time you have attempted speedy deletion of this article. Knock it off. SmashTheState 05:40, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
- PS: To others reading this, I recommend you take a look at the edit history of Ms87. He's a sock puppet created for the sole purpose of vandalizing this article. SmashTheState 05:44, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
KEEP this article. This article is a useful explanation of what the Panhandlers Union is, the impact of the Safe Streets Act on homeless people in Ontario, and what homeless people themselves are doing in response. The IWW is a recognized union in Ontario. I see no reason to delete it.Mooremedia 03:37, 26 October 2007 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mooremedia (talk • contribs) 03:31, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Re: Andrew Nellis
[edit]Wikipedia previously had an article on him and it was voted for deletion. This OPU article seems like an excuse to resurrect that article. The section on Andrew Nellis should be severely reduced or removed entirely. 203.229.73.126 07:04, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
- Done, since nobody else has. Shame on you, Andrew/Fred. 203.229.72.4 08:17, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
- I've undone Andrew's ("SmashTheState") restoration of his vanity section. Andrew, the *relevant* information is still in the article, now in the Organizers subsection. 203.229.74.195 11:07, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit]If this article makes it through AFD, it needs to be written, it needs outside sources, not forum posts and articles from a non-neutral political site. Wikipedia is not a soapbox.Ridernyc 11:10, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
