Academy of Achievement links

Welcome to Wikipedia!
I notice that your contributions so far have consisted primarily, if not entirely, of adding references to the Academy of Achievement Wikipedia article and website. This is a little problematic, as it gives the appearance that your edits have the goal of calling attention to a particular website, rather than reviewing all of the many available interviews by, say, Maya Angelou, and choosing the one that's the most notable for coverage of the topic. While some of these may turn out to be notable enough for inclusion, it makes me hesitate that even the first reference on the AA article describes it as an "obscure" organization.
If you're not associated with the AA, I'd suggest just editing on a different topic for a while. If you are (as your name perhaps implies), I'd suggest you look at relevant guidelines about Conflict of Interest and External link spam, and also asking another, more-established editor for help in sorting through what might be appropriate for inclusion and what not (instructions on how to do this are in those policy articles). - To follow up, I've gone ahead and removed all the external links you placed to AA interviews. The award mention itself seems notable enough in most cases, so I'm fine with leaving those up. As for the links, if you feel one or more of these interviews is particularly relevant or notable for its subject, I'd suggest placing a comment on the article's talk page making the case, and see if other editors agree. - Hello Khazar... I am associated with the Academy of Achievement and genuinely believe that the links to the interviews are relevant, indisputable, and valuable additions to the biographies of the individuals in Wikipedia. I'm not sure how that is considered a conflict of interest. The Academy of Achievement is non-profit organization dedicated to education. Our site does not have any advertisements and we do not get any financial gain from having these links in Wikipedia. -- Aaaeditor (talk) 16:38, 07 July 2011 (EST)
- Hi Aaaeditor, I appreciate your response. As I said above, I agree that some of what you've posted here may be appropriate for Wikipedia External Link inclusion. However, we generally don't seek to include every known interview with a figure as famous as, say, Johnny Cash [1] (there would be hundreds if not thousands), but rather a usefully representative or significant sample. That's why I suggest making your case on individual article talk pages; you could explain on the talk page of that article what that interview contributes to a reader's understanding of Johnny Cash that no other interview could, and an editor with interest in Johnny Cash (rather than the AA itself) could make the decision whether to include it. I suggest this extra step because, as someone personally involved with AA, your edits can come across as promotion (click the link for guideline). If these interviews add to their respective articles, neutral editors should have no problem including them. However, we have had problems in the past with people from organizations coming to Wikipedia and trying to insert their organization's name wherever feasible; whether or not these individuals have a financial interest, they may still have a promotional interest. Hence the double-check in cases of known conflict-of-interest and "single-purpose" accounts. Please do let me know if you have any questions about this. [edit]Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Willie Mays. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. If you continue spamming, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. The way I see it, your persistent addition of Achievement links (with unneeded quotes, as pointed out by other editors) amounts to link spamming for the organization. You may take this up, for instance, at the Wikipedia:External links/Noticeboard, since they are external links rather than references, in my opinion. Drmies (talk) 16:47, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. - While the username may have triggered the block, your conduct is cause for concern as well. You were told months ago that you needed to discuss whether or not a link to your organization's website was appropriate for a particular article - Johnny Cash was the example used. Yet I see you continuing to add the link. This time you added content and quotes to the Johnny Cash article, just so that you could include your link as a reference. I also note that you have absolutely 0 edits to article talk pages.
