We don't normally add citations in the lead (introductory) section of articles. Among other reasons, this is because the lead is there only to summarize the rest of the article, and it's too tempting for many authors to add "new" stuff up there. Also, we place citations after the punctuation, so it's "... end.[123]" not "... end[123].". It would be best if you could move your "new" citations from the lead into the article body wherever they apply - I think you will find there are suitable citations there already, but your new ones will probably be useful, given your expertise in the area.
