Reference Desk

[edit]

Just a note about the Reference Desks here. They are not message boards or discussion forums. As such, it is never acceptable to add or remove words to another person's entry. Each person signs his or her entry with a username and timestamp. When you add/remove from an entry, you are giving a false impression about what the person wrote. Even though you only added the word "QUERY:" to my entry, it was an addition to a signed comment and it implied that I am the one who wrote "QUERY:". In the future, please to not alter the entries written by other users. -- kainaw 17:53, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

June 2008

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. The recent edit you made to Bilbo Baggins has been reverted, as it appears to be unconstructive. Use the sandbox for testing; if you believe the edit was constructive, ensure that you provide an informative edit summary. You may also wish to read the introduction to editing. Thanks. SJP (talk) 10:04, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

While your plot-wise anti-cruft edits/convictions are generally appreciated, some of what was removed may deserve inclusion. That needs to be worked out. At least, please don't remove the infoboxes. Also, why don't you sign up? Uthanc (talk) 11:13, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dol Guldur

[edit]

Your recent edit to Dol Guldur has been identified as vandalism. Everything that was included in that article was relevant and went by the rules/guidelines. Do not make disruptive edits like this again. They now have been reverted. If you want to make massive changes discuss it on the talk page first. Dol Guldur is a Good Article nominee, do not make further massive edits, and I do see that you have been warned before. Also try signing up, make an account. I have responded to this on the wikiproject middle earth talk page.87.102.86.73 (talk) 14:54, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree with much of User:LOTRrules's assessment, but he's right that you should create an account. It gives you a lot more street cred among the editors. Cheers, Elphion (talk) 19:55, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thought that someone should welcome you!

[edit]

Welcome

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages you might like to see:

You are welcome to continue editing articles without logging in, but you may wish to create an account. Doing so is free, requires no personal information, and provides several benefits. If you edit without a username, your IP address (87.102.86.73) is used to identify you instead.

In any case, I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your IP address (or username if you're logged in) and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question and then place {{helpme}} before the question on this page. Again, welcome! the_ed17 14:12, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Having a username helps a lot when editing--when I see that an IP has edited one of the articles I like, I become suspicious, as it is vandalism most of the time! When I see a user name, I think that it's probably alright (though i check it anyway =]). Sorta what was said above; you'll get "street credibility" with a username--but you can edit under your IP all you want as well. Your choice! Hope you have fun...Cheers! the_ed17 20:34, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why would you do this? It's very likely to offend people and you know this. Please consider removing it. Zain Ebrahim (talk) 19:30, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Got your message. It was a joke, in response to what I thought was a jokey comment from Jackof Oz.. Of course I will remove it, since you brought it up. Doing that now...87.102.86.73 (talk) 20:34, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Jack's comment wasn't offensive and he answered the question. Even the most reasonable christian could be expected to get a little annoyed at your comment. Do we really want to piss people off for no reason? Zain Ebrahim (talk) 21:02, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the comment; which I added with no intention of causing offence, and at the time had no idea that it would cause offense. What else do you want me to do?87.102.86.73 (talk) 21:06, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whoa . . . Didn't mean to include any hostility in my previous post - sorry if I did. I was just giving a further explanation. And thanks for removing it (probably should have said this in the earlier post :) ). Zain Ebrahim (talk) 21:09, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I shouldn't get in to the habit of joking on the ref. desks. anyway - as it that behaviour can easily degenerate into a situation that is unhelpful for others, consider this a 'promise not to do it again' type of apology, with the understanding that I should have thought a little more before pressing "save page".87.102.86.73 (talk) 21:16, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(I have a small screen)Actually, I appreciate a little humour now and then. Things get pretty dull after a while otherwise. Just look out for Cookatoo.ergo.ZooM's posts - he seriously leaves me laughing out loud. Cheers, Zain Ebrahim (talk) 21:23, 30 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

new section - relating to diablo 3

[edit]
Well, it seems you have a healthy brain for debate; although do you have msn so you can actually discuss it in full? although i lean slightly towards the 'make it darker' side, i do appreciate that its a new game and changes will be made. as it stands the game looks fricken fantastic, and i'll buy it regardless. So, in the end, i suppose i am being a purist, although you have to admit... you wouldn't want another bright and colourful WoW... then it might just be a few skills changes away from a perfect replica!
There have been quite a few forums talking about the departure of a few key Blizzard North staff from the team after relocation of their office, although i can't quote that, and no news or gaming site is that suicidal to mention that that might be the reason behind many of the WoW team now filling in the holes that the top blizzard north guys left behind. I'm not sure if this should be mentioned, as it would possibly be classed as 'speculation' even tho it's fact that WoW staff ARE working on Diablo, and the top members of Blizzard north Have left. It seems to go one step further and join the two is going one step too far... but oh well.
The fact still stands, that i got my direct quote from a Game Review removed, while your quote from the director remained. Ergo; i have an inferiority complex? Although it seems more likely that i just fear that Wikipedia is becoming more and more bound by 'official' websites, and therefore is dictated as to what it can show, rather than being more of an informative website. -- Tyraz —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tyraz (talkcontribs) 15:21, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've left a brief message on your talk page, and more on the diablo3 talk page, specifically about the link you had removed.

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. It's a little disconcerting - there are many other skilled people here, I'm suprised you have formed such a high opinion of me after such a short time.87.102.86.73 (talk) 20:25, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are indeed a genius and in India, we are taught to respect such gifted people like you.I have grown a high opinion of you since you are the one who answers my questions most frequently. And I've found out that your language of explanation is obviously great, which 99% of the modern persons does not possess. I myself think that UK has done us a great favour by civilizing us and teaching us the Wonderful English language. I truely have an immense respect for your glorious country. And if you don't mind, is India among your favourite countries? 117.201.96.242 (talk) 20:21, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's a difficult question to answer, my favorite country is probably France, though I do like to read about the history and culture of countries with a long history of civilisation, and that includes India.87.102.86.73 (talk) 20:45, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Actually, I'm a bit interested in you because you were the first to answer my first question. Please do not take offence.(I have no grave intentions, I only want to know about you.My interest in you also grew because you are a resident of the nation, in which numerous great people such as Sir Issac Newton, Charles Babbage,Robin Hood and King Richard the Lionhearted. in any special part or character of Indian history or about modern India including Our religeon, culture, schools, education and lifestyles, you may tell me.I shall provide you all information I know on your talk page (since I think that as you answer my questions several times, it is my morale responsibity to try to help you in any way). The Reference Desks

[edit]

Thanks, User-who-goes-by-IP 87.102.86.72, for your considerate advice on my Ref Desk talk query, and even more for the practical action you took on my behalf. I've never seen it done quite this way before, and it's a good model I intend to follow when I find others in similar situations as does happen rather often. I would encourage you to open an account with a less unwieldy name, but I suppose you're aware of your options and will follow through as you see fit. Special Interests?

Friend User-87.102.86.73, after a thorough study of system of education in England, I've found out that few people manage to get degrees in Science Subjects like you, who are no doubt talented. I find solid state chemistry - such as the structure of metals, and other solids the most interesting at present.87.102.86.73 (talk) 19:20, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for answering. But yesterday, you informed me that you are interested in history of many Civilizations, including India. But are you interested in any special portion of Indian History? If you are, may I try to help you by sending you information regarding it?117.201.97.83 (talk) 19:34, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm generally interested in more ancient history (and pre-history), especially ancient monuments and structures etc. But at the moment I don't have anything particular I need to find out about. Thanks for asking though.87.102.86.73 (talk) 20:18, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Funny post

[edit]

between 1 second and 120 second time lapse hence since I must have spent more than 120 seconds writing my post, you were writing your post at the same time as me.

within 4 minutes I decided to take your post out and move it, so that the sequencing of the posts match up. I did not feel like my post made sense anymore, since you posted above my post (beat me to the click by less than 120 seconds) and since I didn't want to contradict your post, I came to your talk page and wrote my response to you and clicked "save page" all in less than two minutes.

Now click here the times were 14:50 and 14:52 of when i last saved the refdesk page and saved your talk page.

your post at my talk page, made no sense to me, at the time. I was so busy rapid-responding to other people, I didn't recognize your IP address. At the time, I forgot whose comment I removed from the ref-desk, but I had a browser window open with 3 tabs. First tab was my removal of your simultaneous post with mine, the second tab was your user page, and the third tab was something unrelated. When I saw "you have new messages" you left on my talk page, I didn't immediately notice the phrase "need sensitive information", because I wrote to you I need to discuss something sensitive. I thought you were on the wrong page!! The only people I remembered were screen names.

So as hindsight reveals herself, this was as a matter of fact what I intended to discuss with you. I needed to move your post to a different part of the article (so that i don't have to re-write my lengthy post to also answer your post above mine) or to get your permission to move it to my or your talk page. I was going to politely ask you through email if you still held your views, after I refuted them, and to encourage you to allow your judgments to evolve after I directed you to the talk pages where I made my case the strongest. Sentriclecub (talk) 20:58, 30 July 2008 (UTC) Lastly, check out the Chris Angel story tonite if your news station carries it. Its local here, but they're re-airing saturday.[reply]

Sorry to disturb you.

Friend User-87.102.86.73, hope you are well. Friend, if you don't mind, will you please tell me whether you like to play 'Chess'? I like to play it very much. Hello. I don't play chess at all really.
You can ask me a question about UK history - though I'm not an expert - it might be better to post it at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities. If you tell me though I will definately have a look at it.87.102.86.73 (talk) 20:26, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I only want to know about your view regarding King Arthur. In our Country India, it is said that King Arthur was truely present. But actually, it appears to be more a myth than a reality. But at present, do the people of United Kingdom believe in King Arthur? (I am glad to inform you I'm deeply surprised to see your wonderful knowledge in all fields of Science. I'm a 15 years old student of High School in India and even after meeting several teachers in my life, I know that majority of today's population are no match for you in Science. There is an extreme requirement for people like you to revive the world.)And friend, after going through all your answers and edits, it appears to me that you may be the Professor of Science or Scientist at some renouned University, as your knowledge is amazing and great. If this question does not offend you, will you tell me that are you a Scientist or Professor of Science?117.201.98.14 (talk) 20:39, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure King Arthur did exist, and I am sure most other people living in England think the same. The legend is far more prevelant in South West England and Wales than where I live in the East of England. I am sure there was a King Arthur, but not of the whole of Britain as there is today, (in that time as I understand it there were many kings, both in England and Ireland). The truth of the matter, though, has probably mostly lost with the retelling of the tales by different writers.
I think if you could find someone who is from cornwall or Wales they would be much more certain than I am of his existence.
Thank you for asking if I was a professor, I am not; there are perhaps only a hundred or so professors of science in all of Britain, and I am very flattered to learn you think I might be one.. Unfortunately there are many millions of people here, and though I am quite good at science there are others who are far more skilled and far more deserving of that title. Whilst at university I had the privilege of meeting some who have earned that title - and I hold them in high regard - they have better applied themselves than I have to their chosen subjects - it requires a special amount of skill and focus to attain that title.87.102.86.73 (talk) 21:39, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
