Thanks for adding the link to my wiki! This topic related to my PhD research. One of the things that I have learned is that the beach monitoring (in Iowa) is usually done early in the week because it gives time for the lab to culture the bacteria and do the counts, thus the warnings are usually a few days out of date by the weekend. My advice for swimmers would be to avoid swimming in rivers and streams within about 48 hours of a big rainstorm to avoid fresh fecal matter. The beach monitoring will tell you which beaches have regularly high bacterial loads, but the levels can vary 3 orders of magnitude over just a few hours. 570ceh (talk) 20:12, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
