Bowling from Bocce?

I have read that "bocce" was practiced in New York in the early XIX century, and that a group of Italian immigrants there decided to "mechanize" it in the 1880s. It was a kind of proto-bowling, with kids recovering the pins and the balls. Do you know something about? B.D.
