Fair use question

Hello, 19h00s, it's good to meet someone familiar with image use here. I have a quick question: can a fair-use image that is a historical portrait of a person no longer alive be used in more than one WP article? Thanks in advance! Netherzone (talk) 00:49, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Netherzone! Yes, you can totally use a fair use image on multiple pages. But you have to have a separate rationale for each usage - here's an example of a fair use image of a sculpture by Cady Noland that's in use on multiple pages. If you scroll down to the rationale, I used the fair use rationale template that allows for multiple explanations/uses. You just need to be sure to include a full rationale for each separate usage.

Also, apologies for not responding to your question on the Firelei Báez page - I think you included most of the info needed for fair use images. My only recommendation would be to format it a bit differently so the separate authors (underlying artwork vs. photograph itself) are clear, and to include the ownership information for the underlying artwork. Generally, fair use images of copyrighted art should include the full credit line for the underlying artwork - here's an example file showing the credit formatting for a painting by Faith Ringgold. I think this example is helpful in that the Ringgold painting is owned by a public institution (NYC Dept of Corrections/DOC), but not a museum/gallery - the DOC doesn't have an accession number or full information about how the work was purchased, unlike most museums, which is similar to the situation with the Báez works.

This is a wonderfully clear explanation, and the examples are quite useful especially for visual art related images.

The file in question is of Tina Bell an early punk grunge singer/songwriter. I am wanting to use it again in the Women in punk rock article because there are so few women of color in the article and no images of Black women. Bell died in 2012, so this is a historical portrait.

I modified the Summary on the image file File:Tina Bell, grunge musician from Seattle.jpg#Summary. If you have a moment to double check the justification for "Purpose of use in article" (WP:NFCC#8), I would appreciate it. Also, since it will (hopefully) be retained in both articles, should I modify the "Use in article" (WP:NFCC#7) and add the second article there? Netherzone (talk) 18:20, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

The image was taken down by a bot from the Women in punk rock article even though I modified the fair-use license.[1]. This was the bot's rationalle: (Removed WP:NFCC violation(s). No valid non-free use rationale for this page. See WP:NFC#Implementation.. I must have done something incorrectly, but I'm not sure what I did wrong. If you have any advice or guidance, I'm all ears. Hmm, so I think the issue is the way you formatted the second rationale - there has to be a second, fully separated rationale, it can't just be in the same template box as the first rationale. The easiest way to format: you can use this template (Non-free media data) to organize the basic details of the photo, and then insert this template twice (Non-free media rationale) and fill it out separately for the two uses. Once there are two separate non-free use rationales in separate templates, then bots should leave it alone. OK, I have added the template you linked to to the File discussion page (once for the Tina Bell article, and once for the Women in punk rock article) and I added a second rational for the file page itself so that there are two rationales, one for each article. @SiefkinDR Thanks! Finished up the top 100 earlier today, but what do you think is the best approach for cleaning up the rest? There are quite a few that got knocked out of the top 100 because numbers are climbing back up, should they just be deleted? I'm going to retain the major museums in mainland China because they just haven't released their 2022 data yet and will undoubtedly end up in the top 100. 19h00s (talk) 00:21, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
