Scare quotes

Hi there,

I removed some quotes from Who's Afraid of Aunt Jemima? per the guidance in MOS:SCAREQUOTES, and you promptly reverted the edit.

Can you tell me why you think we should violate MOS:SCAREQUOTES here? If you think "story quilt" is a term readers would be unfamiliar with, I think that a short explanation or link to an appropriate article would be much more helpful than just putting the term in quotes.

I'm so sorry! I totally thought I was just *adding* those quotes and that I had forgotten to add them myself when I first created the article. I didn't think of them as scare quotes as that guideline seems to imply, but there isn't really a good article to link through to. The sub-article options in Quilts don't really satisfy, as this is both a pictorial quilt and a quilt in the tradition of African-American quilters. Further, Ringgold essentially created the term "story quilt" herself and has self-defined her work as such long before that term became more broadly understood. I'm not sure what the solution here is, but I definitely didn't mean to revert your edits, just didn't notice that someone else had edited the page yet. 19h00s (talk) 19:05, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

Did a bit more digging and I think striking the quotes might be the right solution here. Found an interview with Ringgold where she references the origins of her use of the term, she adopted the term from other narrative-based quilting artists. With that context it feels like the term is non-original enough not to warrant quotes or an explanation. Yep, I also went searching for an article or definition of story quilts on Wikipedia that could be linked to. Lots of articles use the term, but as far as I could see, none of them define it.

Given that, the sentences after the one we're talking about may be the best explanation on Wikipedia of what a story quilt is. If you're feeling proactive, maybe copy an expanded version of it into the Quilt article then link to it? :-)
