WP:COMMA

Dear editor, your recent edits at 117th United States Congress refer to WP:COMMA as the reason for your edits. I went through it again, and couldn't find any rules supporting your most recent edit there. If there is one, please point out exactly which rule supports your edit.

For my explanation however, consider the following examples:

• He wants to make US the largest economy in the world. (no comma after US)
• Biden is the president of the US, the largest economy in the world. (comma after US)
• John wants to make Ronald Reagan a footballer.
• John welcomed Christiano Ronaldo, a footballer.

This is because the first sentence speaks of US to become something, whereas second statement speaks of a quality of the US (i.e., largest economy). Similarly, in the third sentence speaks of Reagon who isn't currently a footballerbut wants to make him one, whereas the fourth sentence speaks of Ronaldo whose quality is to be footballer.

In the Washington D.C. context, the following should be the correct usage of comma:

1. Congress passed a bill to make Washington DC the 51st state. (making it the 51st state isn't DC's quality)
2. Congress passed a bill to grant statehood to Washington DC, the capital of the US. (being the capital is its quality)

Here someone wants to make DC a state, isn't the same as DC, the capital. Here in the first sentence, someone wants to make DC a state, which isn't currently a state, and therefore is not a quality of DC. In second sentence, we speak of DC, and also mention it's quality of being the capital.

Hope you understand. As mentioned above, WP:COMMA doesn't support your edit. And before doing this edit again, please consider to point out which rule supports your edit.
