Introduction:
Andrea Prader had become a known figure in pediatrics and was known for his work in endocrinology. Heinrich Willi was also a prominent pediatrician and Alexis Labhart was a medical professor. Together, these physicians first discovered Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome in the 1950s (Healio). Known now as just Prader-Willi syndrome, those three physicians published the first report describing the syndrome and the children affected by it. PWS is a very rare disorder that occur in only one in 15,000 births (pwsausa). It’s also not picky about who it chooses to affect. It affects all ethnicities and genders equally. PWS is the result of lacking genetic material on a section from chromosome 15. Usually people get one copy of chromosome 15 from each parent. But, the PWS section genes are active on the copy of the chromosome that the dad gives. PWS is most commonly described as the genetic cause of life threatening obesity. PWS affects everybody who has it differently. No two cases are exactly the same, considering how many symptoms and challenges come with this disorder. A common symptom of children two and older is hyperplagia, also known as excessive hunger (FPWR). Children around this age will begin to gain weight very easily and quickly. Their appetites become insatiable and can cause overeating, which can result in weight gain if not monitored. It had been theorized that damage to the hypothalamus could be a possible culprit to this disorder considering how many of the symptoms are controlled by this part of the brain, but it isn’t clear yet how this rare genetic disorder could cause hypothalamic dysfunction (FPWR). While a simple blood test can be used to definitively diagnose PWS, doctors usually suspect due to particular symptoms. As infants, poor muscle tone and difficulties feeding are common indicators of PWS. As they get older, things like short stature, poor motor skills, incomplete sexual development, behavior problems and mental disabilities become apparent. Delayed or incomplete puberty can cause the individual to become infertile, in most cases(Genetics Home Reference). While a cure is currently not available, there are plenty of treatments, programs and therapies to help children with PWS have a successful future. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vanessa Nkwocha (talk • contribs) 04:48, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
