The Inception of Chessie System Included 3 Railroads (All Under One Umbrella of Sorts as over the Decades Controls and Merger was Fueled by Stock Acquisitions) - The B&O, C&O, and WM. C&O Controlled B&O since the Early 60's with the B&O Garnering a Strong Minority Interest in the WM as far back as 1927. To this Day Trackage Rights are still used from All 3 Railroads, However a Goodly Portion of the WM West of Big Pool (Lurgan Sub to Cherry Run) has been Abandoned as it Parallels the Now CSX (B&O) Cumberland Subdivision (West of Big Pool is the WM Cumberland Extension completed in 1906 (Started 1904) with it's Terminus in Cumberland. 152.130.7.9 (talk) 09:12, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Chessie System, Inc. was a holding company that owned the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O), the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), the Western Maryland Railway (WM), and Baltimore and Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad (B&OCT). Trains operated under the Chessie name from 1973 to 1987. 152.130.7.9 (talk) 09:15, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The WM established a connection with the B&O in 1892 with the opening of the Potomac Valley Railroad, controlled by WM, between Williamsport and Big Pool, Maryland. This connection brought a major increase in through-freight traffic. Construction of an extension from Hagerstown to Cumberland began in 1903 and completed in 1906. This became the West Subdivision. To service the expanded system, the WM built a major shop complex at Hagerstown in 1909, with a roundhouse, machine shops and related facilities. Rail yards at Hagerstown were also expanded. 152.130.7.9 (talk) 09:18, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
In 1964, the C&O and the B&O jointly filed for permission to acquire control of the Western Maryland Railway with the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). The ICC approved the acquisition in 1968. 152.130.7.9 (talk) 09:19, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Chartered as Baltimore, Carroll & Frederick Rail Road on May 27, 1852. Name was soon changed to Western Maryland, and opened in November 1862. B&O acquired a strong minority interest in 1927, and B&O and C&O acquired full control in 1967. WM went into Chessie System in 1973, and B&O formally merged WM on May 1, 1983.
